Elton was a prodogy as a child and you can hear it in his piano playing. Even though a lot of the piano could mistakenly be lost to some in the mix, here we hear all the subtle changes in its full glory. First off, this piano was a famouse piano used by many recording artists and was moved to trident studios I believe where Elton recorded this track. Im not sure how the piano was set, whether its mic placement or Eltons playing, or both. But it has a wonderful tone. Sounding mellow but really stringy when Elton digs in. I've listened to other artists playing the same piano back in this era, and it doesnt have the same tone, so maybe its to do with how its recorded and mixed. Going back to Elton on this track, you can hear how he varies the tune all the way through and never plays each verse or chorus exactly the same. He will vary it by improvising either playing up the piano or adjusting syncopation or both. His playing is quite simply genius. The fact he does all this and sings incredibly, along to it as well is just amazing. He has said, coming from a classical trained background, he moved to pop because of his small hands and the difficulty of playing some classical pieces. All I can say is. Thank god he did and weve been blessed by his music all these years.
