Cello Journey
Дания
Добавлен 10 мар 2024
This is my cello journey.
I decided to start paying cello at the age of 39, because I love the sound. Never touched a cello before, but I felt that it was my thing, so I went out and bought a cello and got myself a teacher once a week.
Day one = 19 January 2024
Practice rutine = 2-3 hours, 6-7 days a week
Lessons = 20 minutes once a week
Cello = Solista European handmade Montagnana 4/4 Model (new)
Bow = Carbon brilliante (new)
I have previous music experience: Violin at age 4-8, piano at age 9-20.
I post every time I learn a new piece and write a little bit about challenges and thoughts in the videos description. I only count days in which I had a practice session.
You are welcome to leave a comment, if you have any questions!

Day 284 learning cello : Etude no 10 op. 31 by Sebastian Lee
21/12 2024
Etude no 10 "Rondo", opus 31 by Sebastian Lee (from Forty Melodic and Progressive Etudes / 40 Melodische Etüden).
There are billions of notes and shifts in this etude! It finally feels like I'm more confident in my intonation, and different positions are more or less imprinted in my hand and fingers. That feels like a milestone!
I had my last lesson this year and got tons of homework for the next three weeks. My teacher introduced me to thumb position (ouch!), so I'm currently spending half an hour every day trying to build up calluses with exercises and working through Minuet by Boccherini in tenor clef and with thumb positions. It's a bit frustrating, but also very exciting as...

14/12 2024 Chanson Triste op. 40, No. 2 by Piotr Illyich Tchaikovsky from Susuki book no. 4 TAKE 2! :-) Still working on this piece, as it lacked dynamics in the last recording (pointed out by both my teacher and one of the commentators on the last recording :-) ). I’ve become more confident in playing it and have more capacity to focus on the expression I want. I also moved my bow closer to th...

7/12 2024 Chanson Triste op. 40, No. 2 by Piotr Illyich Tchaikovsky from Susuki book no. 4 I'm a one-man band once again! Both the cello and piano parts are very enjoyable to play. It was very helpful to spend time on last week's exercises with the tenor clef and high positions-everything was used in this piece. I'm also trying vibrato here and there, but these are still early steps. This is my...

23/11 2024 Etude no 9, opus 31 by Sebastian Lee (from Forty Melodic and Progressive Etudes / 40 Melodische Etüden). Those études are just getting harder and harder! No. 9 is all over the fingerboard - including 5th and 6th positions, which are new for me. Constant position and string changes make it so difficult to play in tune. I worked quite hard on every bar. There are still some places a bi...

4/11 2024 Etude no 8, opus 31 by Sebastian Lee (from Forty Melodic and Progressive Etudes / 40 Melodische Etüden). Oh boy, this one was HARD! It's an exercise for the right wrist. I focused on using less elbow and more wrist movement, practicing it slowly and only with bass-upper-bass-upper tones. It helped clean things up so I don't hit the string in between when jumping from C to G or D to A....

I'm a one-man band! :-) I haven’t forgotten how to play piano, and the accompaniment to this piece wasn’t difficult. It includes both tenor clef, harmonics, and position shifting between 1st and 4th positions. Hi! You play the cello very very well!! I'm 51 yo and am learning play cello as well since 1.5 years. You have aquieved a very beautiful sound yet!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you! Wonderful, happy practice ❤

Como hiciste para memorizar todas las pociones
Muscle memory from repetition. Etudes no 1-9 from S. Lee op. 31 and position exercises did the work, so I can now see/feel positions/notes both in my head and hand.
@@Cello_Journey okey gracias te admiro mucho as avansado mucho en poco tiempo
Right out of the gate, this is better than your last upload. Your bowing is fuller with a more intense tone. You’re well on your way.
If only I sounded this good in my first year of playing in the 5th grade! Some adult beginners like yourself are able to bring a level of focus and discipline to their practice that most kids just can't match. Very good stuff. I agree with the other commenter about experimenting with bow speed & pressure, that'll pull a more full sound out of your instrument.
Thank you so much! I think it gets easier to learn different skills with age (not only cello), as you build up on your previous experience and also are aware of how to acquire knowledge and how to practice optimally (& determine your weaknesses). Yes, I agree too. I did a second version with better dynamics (Day 277 : ruclips.net/video/mgpG68IJNlQ/видео.htmlsi=g8YZJHB1i5UL8SQo )
I admire your determination. I am 24 years old and I am trying to learn the violin on my own. Honestly, I wanted to do this kind of work that you did. If you don't mind me asking, I was wondering how long do you practice per day?
Uh, violin is quite a challenge! Very best luck and enjoyment with your journey. I usually get 2-3 hours a day (with maybe 2-3 days off a month) and a weekly lesson. Its really is a habit now.
@@Cello_Journey Thank you for responding to my comment. I thought half an hour a day would be enough. Thanks to your comment, I realized that I need to work a little more. Thank you very much.

nice intonation. But If I were your teacher, I would have you do bow exercises with open strings
Thank you! Why would you recommend this (and what kind of exercises?)
@@Cello_Journey Why do I recommend this? Because what makes the cello ‘speak’ is the bow, not the intonation.... beginners often make the mistake of becoming obsessed with intonation, and ignore the dynamics of the bow. Without them, the music sounds completely flat. This very piece you played is extremely expressive. But in your playing there was no dynamic sound at all, it sounded as if you were counting notes. I know you are a beginner, and that's precisely why you should pay attention to that. The sooner you start to educate your right hand, the faster you will be able to make progress. Because as I said, without bow dynamics, the music will sound flat, and therefore, it will be dead.
@ Thank you for explanation. I am aware of lack of dynamics and it is exactly what we worked on yesterday with my teacher, when I showed her this first draft. It is the first “real” slow and melodic piece I have played between all of the etudes and Rome wasn’t built in a day. Everything is a struggle right now - both intonation, sound, new clef and (imitation of 🙈 )vibrato, but all those things have my attention and will eventually get better. Do you have any specific exercises for the bowing that you could recommend? (composer & opus).
@@Cello_Journey simply play open strings creating dynamics, from mezzoforte at the heel of the bow to forte at the tip of the bow and vice versa. Do not use weight but speed. Do more and more extreme dynamics until you go from piano-pianissimo at the heel of the bow to forte fortissimo at the tip of the bow. This is not something that will come quickly, you will need a lot of time and practice for the hand to get used to it and above all for the sound to be regular and rounded. Doing it with open strings will allow you to concentrate on the right hand. If you get boring of the open strings, just play easy scales while you do it.
@ That’s great - going to try it out. Thank you!

I actualy learn bach 2 suite :)
Uh, it’s a difficult one 😱 Enjoy it!
wait what?? This is really good for someone who has played the Cello for not even a year. Congratulations!!
Thank you!! 🤩
My favorite etude of the set. You played it beautifully ,nice intonation
Thank you so much! I’m beginning to like it too - very melodic.
You are amazing!!!
Aww! And likewise - I see you’re on the same journey ❤️
I’m impressed!
Amazing progress. How many hours a day did you practice over the 254 days?
Thank you! 2-3 hours a day, less in the beginning.
That is impressive commitment, no wonder you are playing so well. I've been playing for almost two years and only now I am learning shifts.
How much time do you practice per day?
2-3 hours
Most people I know would mess up the intonation, but you did a great job here!
Thank you! To get right intonation was relatively easy in this etude. Instead I’m struggling to get a good sound bowing-wise when in 3rd and 4th position (sounds very tight and muffled/closed right now - I have to release some tension, I think ).
@@Cello_Journeydont worry to much on your bow, because to us your projection sounds fine! And if your worried about higher positions do exercises for that(one that i like to do is play any scale but with my first finger only, it teaches you to familiarize yourself with higher positions) anyways keep up the good work ❤
@ Good to know! Presented it to my teacher and she thinks it’s sounds fine too 👌👌
As a cellist working on my diploma in ABRSM, this is great progress!!!!
Brava! My teacher has me working on this set of etudes now. Currently working on 3.

Very beautiful music of Vivaldi🎉 Enjoyed your playing and subscribed to stay in touch☺️🎶
Thank you! You play very lovely yourself - looking forward to follow your next recordings 👏
Very nice! Are you familiar with the 3 Lee Op. 36 cello duets? They are typical Lee and I think about at the same level as the Op. 31 etudes you are working on. I am currently working on the cello I part of the second one. I like playing them with my teacher who, needless to say, has much better tone and intonation than I do so it forces me to try and match her sound. I hope the Larsen strings sound good on your instrument. I recently bought the A and D Larsen Il Cannone "Warm and Broad" strings. Haven't put them on yet, but I'm hoping they warm up my sound a bit, especially the A string.
@@vinyltarian Nope, I have to check them out, thanks for the tip! I know - It’s very motivating to play with your teacher 😅 I got some homework already from mine - next one is “Duet for 2 celli” by Paul Hindemith and sonata (duet) in B-moll major by Mozart (although the last one seems quite difficult..). Tell me how it goes! I have the same dilemma - I think especially my A string is too shrill compared to C and G, so I got a “Medium” instead of “Strong” from same “Soloist” series.
Meu deus!!!! Que interpretação incrível!!! Fico extremamente orgulhoso por acompanhar sua evolução! Continue tocando!! Por favor!!
Thank you so much and thank you for watching ❤ I have a soft spot for this piece and so glad that I can finally play it!
Lovely piece and very nice work 😊
Thank you! It’s one of my favorite pieces 😍
You are not a beginner! You can already hold you bow right, you know already first position, you can already play the scale without watching what are you fingers are doing, and this is on day 5! This is a joke! 😅
Please read my channels description, where I among other things tell about my previous music experience. Hopefully it will make more sense to you.
I love it😍 how can you play with yourself? How do you do it?

@@dswiftie all of the etudes from op. 70 are in first position, so it is very straightforward 👌
@@Cello_Journey and I KNOW FIRST POSITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just discovered your channel. You have made impressive progress in a short amount of time! Your channel description says that you practice 2-3 hours daily. If you wouldn't mind, could you describe your typical practice day? How do you fill up 3 hours of practice? I imagine there must lots of scales and arpeggios in addition to etudes and other pieces. I started taking cello lessons 2 years ago at age 69 and have just recently built up to be able to practice 2+ hours a day, mostly because I joined an orchestra and I need that time to learn all the music, much of which is quite challenging for me. I look forward to following your journey.
Thank you! I have a list of 2 octave scales in both major and minor, which I play through as a warmup- it usually takes half an hour. Then I go directly to a piece I’m learning, because it is etudes I’m studying and thats where I gain my technique. (If I was learning a classical piece I would probably spend more time on exercises etc.) If it’s a very new piece - I play it through until I’m comfortable/ getting a flow in just sight reading it with now hiccups more or less (takes a couple of hours depending on the piece). Then the real work begins and that’s how my practice usually looks like: I identify problem areas and only focus on them. I can use an hour on only one bar for instance. If I feel that there is shaky intonation, I use tuner app on my phone to correct it. The same goes for rhythm where I use metronome from the same app. It could also be problems with uneven left hand fingers in fast passages, where I apply different rhythms to correct it. Bowing can also be uneven - I’m trying different angles, different bowing positions to extract better sound etc. Most importantly is to film yourself, as it is easier to see and hear what I’m doing wrong. The easy etudes I was working on usually takes 2-3 days to finish to my satisfaction, while the more advanced etudes I’m working on now can take up to a few weeks. I work on 1-2 pieces at a time. That is very cool. I hope I will get an opportunity to play in a small orchestra too 🤞
@@Cello_Journey Thank you for the detailed reply! I should filming myself too. I know it will help a lot but I am lazy about it. I'm sure you will find an orchestra to play with when you are ready. I was not really ready technically to join an orchestra, but I'm not getting any younger and all the comments I've read about it said that you never feel ready and should just go for it. Unfortunately for me, I have to simplify things sometimes to be able to play them at tempo and I get frustrated with that.
Wow, I have been playing violin for seven years so I do not know much about cello but you sounded really good for that short amount of time. It is never too late to learn I hope you keep with it. That was beautiful.
