Independent Spirits Bourbon Experience and Tour
Просмотров 20314 дней назад
In my first distillery tour we visited Independent Spirits Distillery in Woolwich, NJ where we met one of the owners. Mark showed us how the bourbon and many other things are made in their grain to glass Jersey Fresh distillery. He also shared the wild story of how (and why) he made the worlds only version of a whiskey. Turns out Independent Spirits is a great place to visit and hang out. They ...

Hibiki Harmony Japanese Whiskey for Bourbon Drinkers
Просмотров 2433 месяца назад
This is a delicious alternative to bourbon for people who love bourbon. Hibiki Harmony has some similar notes to bourbon with enough different notes to give bourbon drinks some very tasty if they are looking for something different.
Two things. 1. Passing on the squat bottle Redemption Single Barrel (usually 9 or 10yr) MGP single barrels for under 100 bucks was a mistake. High aged MGP bourbon from a NDP at under a hundo is a buy. 2. When it comes to Pinhook, you need to look for store picks (NJ) at 8 yr (yellow label and wax top), or 9 yr (brown wax/label) that again are under a hundo and are high aged MGP bourbon aged at Old Taylor Castle and Key warehouse that can be absolute bangers for the price. Look up (google) the Pinhook aging vertical series (aging barrels year over year and releasing batches, but they are also offering store picks from their high aged stocks) for more information.
Damn that is useful info! Thank you!
You just missed a Bhakta tasting Tuesday night at Benash in Cherry Hill
Ugh. Have you had it? Any good?
Not sure, I was there for a mezcal event the week prior. Another store sold tickets for the Bhakta tasting but lost their venue so Benash took the opportunity to host it. They're a great shop right around the corner from Total Wine if you're in the area.
All the PA Wine and Spirits stores are pretty much the same. On the radio, they advertise "the buying power of PA" and passing thaton to the customer. Total BS. I live near Easton PA and if I frequently go across the river to Phillipsburgh , NJ for better price and selection.
Yep! I really don’t know how small liquor stores are able to get better prices and better selection than a whole state.
Bird Dog is artificially flavored and is made by the same Bird Dog straight bourbon. With that said I like sipping the peach on ice with a cigar in the summer.
No judgement. Cigar whiskey pairings aren’t easy.
I own the Jefferson ocean Joe cannals store pick it’s very good… also I go their cask strength
That’s good to know. Thank you!
Well done ---- nice to actually be able to see the prices!
Thank you! I think prices are kinda important.
19:26 Smoke Wagon Full Strength is a great bourbon for the price
Thank you! I was waiting for someone to weigh in on that.
I got that Heaven's Door Canal's store pick a few weeks back and it's really nice - I feel I got my money's worth for sure.
Thank you! That is helpful!
I thought TJ went to the Canals in Lawrenceville
Yeah he was there he was also at my spot on spruce street
This is that one. That area can go by both names. I figured most people are more familiar with “Princeton.”
Whistle Pig, Jefferson's and High West just sit on the shelf gathering dust here in mid michigan. Good Video 👍💯 Cheers 🥃
Here too. And Thank you!
Know any south Jersey spots? Not looking for allocated stuff; I’d just like to get shelfers at a fair price
There are a lot of Canals out there. Also, Total Wine or Wegmans in Cherry Hill.
Great video, that baby Jane was disappointing.
Good to know. I stayed away from that one because everything I was hearing was “good for the price.” I want just plain good.
Was that new riff 8 the bourbon or the rye?
Bourbon
@TheBourbonTable I live in the area and had been looking for that. Picked one up today, thanks!
From PA but got stationed in Hawaii in 01 and never left. Great content, that Yamazaki 12 is great. Sales for $190 and I remember when it used to be a $70 bottle.
On Black Friday I was in line at 3am waiting for the Navy Exchange to drop some bottles. Got the MWND($160), Blantons Gold($120),EHT($70),ER($40), Weller12($35), WellerCYPB($60)
How much more expensive is bourbon in Hawaii?
I’m jealous of those prices. But that’s the perks for protecting our country.
@@TheBourbonTable Local stores might raise the price $5-$10 bucks on some of the popular selections above MSRP, some ABC stores go full secondary prices on allocated bottles. The NEX do take care of their own in uniform. 🤙🏽
Just got the Derringer for 60 bucks in New Hampshire! Great video explaining these lousy stores. The employees just no training or knowledge and the day the sale starts NOTHING is ever labeled…
How can they not get great stuff all the time!?
great video nice style I'm in PA too worst liquor monoply in America
Me too. I did a video on Fine Wine and Good Spirits store. They almost have nothing great.
Wow! I love the rapid fire pace. Tons of useful info!… and the production value just keeps getting better!
Much appreciated!
Epic hunting
Thank you! I need to step up my game though. Maybe I’ll have special guests.
The whistle pig 15 is delicious
They have a decent price at $280
About 7 1/2 minutes into the video you mentioned that you should’ve purchased a bourbon why did you want to purchase that bourbon?
Benchmark Single Barrel is a very good bottle that I don’t have and it is relatively inexpensive.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video & very helpful to me. I live in the same area & im looking for anything Buffalo Trace
Glad it was helpful! I’ve seen Benchmark, Sazerac, and one Wellers Full Proof at this spot. It is very hard to find BT at or near MSRP in NJ. Good hunting!
No, I’m really happy. I got this for $95 before tax. I’m happy to hear it’s off allocation as well too.
There was only drop in some store here in PA.
I was gonna tell you if anyone in PA sees praise being handed out for these terrible antiquated POS stores they are going to comment strongly. Hahaha I read some comments and you. The stores are TERRIBLE. No competition and (like you said) they all have the same stuff so once you’ve tried all the bourbons tjeymcarry, you have to go out of state to get anything different. We all hate those stores
I find something one in 20 visits. If I go to NJ I find good stuff every time.
I live in Cleveland, Ohio, and drive frequently to Pennsylvania for work and that’s where I get almost all of my allocated bourbons most things I can find sitting on the shelves collecting dust
That’s awesome! Any location in particular?
I have to visit them soon🥃
It’s a good time.
The owner is such an amazing storyteller! I really enjoyed the tour of this amazing local business. Really good informative video, Derek!
Mark is awesome! He makes it fun, tasty, and educational.
Wow! That looks like a great way to enjoy bourbon and support local businesses. I love how you shared the owner’s stories. Very entertaining! … and thanks for the bloopers… funny!
Great comment! Thank you!
What does it compare to? That’s more popular like how does it compare to Buffalo trace
Great questions!
Super cool I learned a lot about what bourbon is how Berman is made and all of that.
Thank you!
By nature not an alcohol drinker at all but always enjoy all the insight and interesting information every session
Thank you! Glad you enjoy!
I enjoyed your podcast. It's great he uses local grown farms for to make his Bourbon.
Agreed. Local farmers need all the help they can they can get.
Extremely interesting and I love the fact that they use all local people. Keeping everyone employed! Also, the drinks look delicious! Who knew adult milkshake…love it!
It is very delicious.
Try the Flourtown store in Montgomery County. They have a great bourbon selection too.
I’ll check it out. Thank you!
What’s the trick to finding allocated bottles at Fine Wine? They seem to always keep it in the back and it’s very hush hush unless you ask directly
You have to get there the same day as the delivery. You can ask one their employees when that is. You can also call and ask if they got in any new or allocated bourbons in. If they did they have to sell it to you. I’ve had a manager pull one from behind the counter for me. But if you miss the first day they will be gone. The good news is that you will buy them for MSRP or a couple dollars above. I get Eagle Rare for $41.
I have 2 bottles of Birdgang. I have cracked one open and I’m holding the other one for the next Eagles Super Bowl. I actually really like it. Every time I drink it I find myself saying “this is one of the best $35 bourbons I’ve ever had.” Blue eyed six is O.K. But nothing to write home about. Thistle Finch is a distillery in Lancaster. It is pretty good. Their Rye is what most of the bars in the area will carry. Resurgent is one of my personal favorite distilleries in the SE PA area. Good whiskeys with a different flavor profile than most are used to. Their Bourbon is hard to come by but the Whiskey Tribe guys said it is fantastic.
Great info! Thank you! I just tried Resurgent. I get it. Interesting about Bird Gang. I never would have thought.
Fine wine and spirits is the Worst. Terrible selection. The online ordering is terrible, employees are lazy and rude. Pennsylvania needs to sell it. I always buy out of state when I can
@@drewspencer9769 Better selection in NJ.
I really like what Beam has done with Overholt. For years it was just the BiB but in the last few years they have had a couple of limited releases and the new expressions. They even changed the BiB to non-chill filtered. Last years 10 year was really good. Have not seen the 11 year yet.
Agreed. They are doing some really nice things with that brand and mash bill. And I don’t mind the price of the 11 year for what you get either.
Subscribed - I'm close by in Chalfont.
Awesome! Thank you!
The Blue Bird Four Grain is slammin! Best Pa Whiskey I've ever had was from Resurgent. It was a limited release good label custom cask, 118 proof, AMAZING!
I’ve heard that. I’m gonna have to try it.
Dads hat
Good one!
price and selection in PA fine wine is really a travesty. I rarely buy anything from them. I end up placing orders with a friend who lives in Kentucky and have him bring me large orders for a shopping fee twice a year and its still cheaper for me
I love that! Kentucky is a great place to know someone.
Don't buy PA bourbon. Stick with the stuff that is being chased. there is a reason people chase it. I usually hit a philly suburb when they run out of the good stuff in the middle of PA, so the store you showed was exactly as I expected.
I get lucky every now and then. But most of the good stuff I get in Jersey or Delaware.
Social Still you didn’t mention from Bethlehem. The shelfers are young and I’d pass. They had limited aged product that was good at distillery.
Cool. Thank you!
Don’t waste your money on Pennsylvania bourbon
None of them?
Bluebird you mentioned isn’t bad. My favorite is Holy Ghost that’s only sold from their distillery. Not in fwgs.
Liberty Pole is actually pretty solid
Thanks for the video and info… I happen to work for FWGS , I enjoy watching these reviews and tastings and hopefully give my customers a good feedback when they ask “ How good is this and if it’s worth the price “… Keep at it 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much! Just starting out I appreciate the encouragement.
Simple way to get Basil Hayden as a value: Old Grand Dad 😺 If you want value priced Pikesville, it's Rittenhouse. Early Times BiB isn't distributed in several states nearby. Sazerac these days is pushing Benchmark heavily in that level. Campfire is a blend of bourbon, rye, and Scotch. Peated Scotch at that - so yes, you're going to get strong opinions for sure.
Great points! I forget sometimes that it’s the same juice in different bottles. Thanks marketing. Lol
Thistle and Finch is In Lancaster PA at 417 W Grant St behind the fire station they are pretty good
Wow. So many PA bottles! Thanks for the confirmation.
