The Blues Impalas
Добавлен 8 сен 2020
Live Blues Set 18 Aug 2024
Welcomed back for another chance with the Ale House's discerning patrons, I'm on my own this time (with my new Yamaha P-525b - and yes, it was EXTREMELY heavy!) Tonight I'm playing:
Have a Good Time (Big Walter Horton)
Mother-In-Law Blues (Junior Parker)
Hard Times (John Lee Hooker)
Down Home Blues (George Jackson / ZZ Hill)
Highway Looks Good to Me (JSJ - that's me)
Big Legs, Tight Skirt (John Lee Hooker)

Review of my new Yamaha P-525B. Why did I buy this thing?

Here's what I think is OK and what's kind of meh about the Yamaha P-525B. As a life-long Roland guy, why did I buy a Yamaha? What's so fantastic about this keyboard that compels me to put up with numerous other not-so-great features and quirks?

Experience the cheerful chaos of setting up & playing a live set at a local venue. To save time we just do the sound check on the fly. Eventually it all comes together. 1. Mean Ol' Frisco - Arthur Crudup, 1962, arr. JJ based loosely on Little Walter's "Crazy legs" and the Otis Spann piano style. 2. Just a Dream - Bill Broonzy, 1939, arr. JJ based on Eddie Cleanhead Vinson's 1969 version. 3. Mot...

The Highway Looks Good To Me - original new song performed 24 Dec 2023

This is an original song I wrote, based on a mis-remembered Bob Dylan lyric (that I now realise doesn't exist) and on another throwaway line from a blues song I heard years ago, the name of which I can't remember. It follows a 12-bar progression in G, but the turnaround is voiced as Dmaj7add9 (play F#m7/D); and C9,11 (play Bbadd6/C). These close chords sound great in an electric piano voice bec...

I think this is my best performance of this 1991 Johnny Johnson song yet captured on video. Your mileage may vary.

not really sure who wrote this song; my attempts to find out were unsuccessful. If you know (and bring receipts - I mean verified Names and Dates) then pls LMK.
Tanqueray - Cover 17 Dec 2023 with Band

Since we had a pick-up band on the night, the set list was made up of songs that work well in a combo, and that everybody knew (more or less). This 1991 song by Johnny Johnson is always a crowd and band favourite.
I Don't Believe

"I Don't Believe" is a Blues song written & originally performed by Bobby Bland in 1956, and (falsely, in my opinion) credited to his non-song-writing producer. Covering this classic tonight as The Blues Impalas are myself, Harry on guitar, Hanson on a homemade bass he built himself (and not from a kit), and Steve on drums.

This is a 1966 song written by Arlester Christian and first performed by his band, "Dyke and the Blazers." A year later it was covered by Wilson Pickett, whose version became the canonical one. Well, I happen to think there's still a lot of room for improvement, so my new, original arrangement of the song has improved lyrics and an added chorus progression. There's also a reggae version of this...
Down Home Blues

You might remember this one from ZZ Hill back in 1983. Written by George Jackson, and widely covered since then.

Nice review of actual use cases.
"It's a little bit light in the organ department. But we've all been accused of that from time to time." 😄Yeah, forget the app. It not the P225. Beyond the better key action and speakers, the main selling point for the P525 is the ability to do everything without the app or a manual in front of you. We're definitely looking close at this one. Thanks for the sound advice. Nice playing, btw.
I think I'll buy it, thx for the review
Did you consider the Yamaha CK-88? It has all the buttons and knobs needed to make changes on the fly without the need for an app or going through menus. Also, for portable use its only 28.8lbs - compared to 48.5lbs for the P-525.
yes i did! I found some of the tiny metal switches on it were horrible. Bad idea, no good at all, didn't like. Also, the keys felt plasticky and fake, and the action was not as nice - nothing at all like the fabulous feel of the P-525. But i know lots of pros play it, so . . . it's probably pretty good if you're not weird like me.
I believe most of the menu access limitations you mentioned are solvable with the use of the Smart Pianist app.
good to know - thanks. however i ain't gonna be using no smartphone or tablet in a live performance either. Nothing that takes my head out of the moment works for me. probably just me though.
follow-up: I tried the app. Could not get it to connect. Gave up; deleted it. Guess I'm too old.
Love this
Nice tune mate
