oil turns into petroleum at around 750+ F degrees or something and into sour gas at 800+ if i remember, they are safe to use as liquid lock for any sort of builds that output less heat than its boiling point. Normally a Metal Refinery steam room output up to around 400F heat producing steel and you can easily turn this into power, letting your steam turbine run at max (Oil need to be used as a coolant btw for refinery). Due to how ONI work as a game mechanic wise, gas or liquid can only exist in one tile square, they can't overlap. Using a liquid lock completely blocks any sort of gas from mixing into a room of your desired gas this is the most simply way to control gas elements. In case of dealing with drastic temperature rooms, you use a double liquid lock with a vaccum in the middle to prevent heat transfer in between.
Really good to know, I'm for sure going to be building liquid locks the next time I record a episode! Didn't think of using oil as a coolant either, but makes good sense. Figured I'd have to produce a coolant at some point or something! Thanks again for you're help!
Crude oil is probably your best bet for a liquid lock
Thanks for the info! Honestly makes sense, I really have been having some troubles with the steam rooms, but hopefully I can get it all sorted out soon!
Pipes (gas and liquid) break if there contents changes state, ie. if you pump water and it heats up it the pipe to boiling point, it will break the pipe and the steam will come out. Same thing if your water goes below freezing: ice will drop out and break your liquid pipe. Insulated pipes help prevent heat transfer between the contents and the surroundings, but at your stage in the game it'll only help so much: if liquid stays stationary in your pipes it will still (slowly) transfer heat to/from the surrounding room.
I have noticed this a bit, but wasn't sure exactly why! I mean it makes perfect sense, much like pipes would react irl. When I'm offscreen of where something is taking damage just to come back and see it broke it just doesn't "click" sometimes! Insulated pipes do seem to help. Hopefully going forward I can keep issues from happening by just keeping liquids flowing! Thanks again for all the help!
Wires will overload when your power use goes over their limit: for regular wire that is 1000 Watts, and conductive wire can take 2000 Watts. If you put 2 aquatuners, a metal refinery and a glass forge on 1 wire, you ARE going to overload it. And the game is made in such a way that a random wire segment will overload - even if from a technical standpoint, the current doesn't even go through that piece. .. then another random segment, and so on. In order to prevent normal wire from overloading, you can use a small transformer: that will never be able to generate more than 1000 Watts. But conductive wire cannot be protected by a large transformer, as they can handle 4000 Watts, while the wires can only handle 2000. Doubling your wiring won't fix that, or using a single wire to each machine won't suffice either. You simply need to make sure the maximum power never goes over 2kWatts. You can see max power when you hover over the wire. Smartest practice is to either use heavy-watt wires (which give you problems with decor and heat transfer) or simply use a seperate transformer+wiring for each heavy user, like all those 1200 Watt machines. On a regular map that won't matter much. On the minibase map that i'm playing (on the other video platfrom, which i cant name here) space & resources are a premium.
Great tip! Honestly thought that a Heavy Watt wire carrying all my power would overload the appliance I connected it to. But after messing with the Aquatuners a bit more I found out that's not the case! I'm sure my electrical grid still needs some help but it's getting there lol. Thanks again for the comment!
Im not sure if they changed it in DLC but I went back to my old save and checked. Turns out you still can build Pneumatic doors as wall/ceilings out of regular non refined metal and it is the only door that Shove Vole can't dig through, you need your floor to be made out of refined metal though, and you just build enough space for a grooming station/drop off/one or two incubators/sweepers conveyor system if you want to transport the meat to your kitchen automatically (if you're planning to feed your Shove Vole to have a faster jump start on the ranch population then install a Robo Miner in the stable to dig out their waste) because Shove Vole does not care or get the Crowded debuff.
Thanks! I never would've thought of that, I used this info the last time I was playing actually. Although I wish I knew they didn't get crowded, or I wouldn't have built so big lol. Thanks again for the continued help and support, I'll keep the automation ideas in mind moving forward!
Shove voles can't pass through: abyssalite, refined metal tiles, diamond or obsidian tiles, and STEEL doors. If you want to keep them in the room using doors, you will need steel. Another much simpler option that i often use: voles cannot jump gaps. So if you make an isolated room (of any material) that has only ladders going in, they can't get out although they will go into the walls often, if you don't use any of the materials i mentioned above. Keep it up!
Good info! Although they do apparently not pass thru normal pneumatic doors as well! At least as of yet! Which is kinda crazy seeing as they can go thru airlocks, made of the same material! But for now that's what I'm using, to save on materials for the time being!
Watching your gameplay as i type: Everything in Oxygen not included is technical and can be calculated to the exact amounts. An electrolizer creates 112 grams of hydrogen and 888 grams of oxygen for every 1000 grams of water. So in order to have 1 pump (500 grams/second) work constantly, you'd need about 4 of those electrolizers, creating 448 grams of hydrogen per second. At the same time, they'd create 3552 grams of oxygen every single second, so you'll need 4 pumps to pump all that out constanly, without causing overpressure. But with only 10 dupes. you actually need only 1000 grams per second (each dupe breathes 100grams/s), so 2 electrolizers would be enough with good margin. You can easily calculate how many pumps you need, and how much of the time your hydrogen generators will be on. I know this is getting a bit technical, but hey: this is Oxygen Not Included. It's a technical game! Edit: if you are using a pipe and a liquid vent to dump water and then use a liquid pump (using 240Watts) to pump it back up..... you are wasting 240 Watts! Just run the pipe into whatever you want to use the water for, in this case you electrolizers. This also negates the use of your liquid valve, as your machines will only use the amount water they need and nothing more. If they need 1kg per second, they'll only draw 1 kg/s from the pipe.
You're totally right ONI is a pretty technical game! I really should do a little more calculating now that I think about it so that way things run more efficiently. Also huge thanks for pointing out the extra filter/pumps, I got used to them being there for so long that It didn't dawn on me to remove them! Thanks again for your continued support!
Hey Ken! Haven't logged into YT for a couple weeks, so i missed some of your videos. I see you made it all the way to cycle 600, congrats! In the meantime, i've started using my R-U-M-B-L-E account, come look me up sometime: i'm GamingGrandpa. (apparently, that one word is considered profanity here - go figure!)
Hey welcome back! Also thanks for the congrats! I haven't actually used that platform yet but I'll be sure to look you up if I do!
@@kendeavor I tried youtube, but it won't let me upload over 15 minutes, and i don't want to buy a burner phone, just to create YT videos. But it's okay. youtube isn't a platform i wanna be on. It's owned by Google, and therefore .... (well, i decided to not print the rest of my message, since it would get me banned completely). And yes, you should get over to a free-speech platform, like ***** (i can't type the word, as that would get this message flagged and deleted without a minute), but you get my point! This ship is sinking, my fren. Google is taking on water and people that are still left here are noticing it.
An easy way to find geysers is using the temperature overlay, the neutronium doesn't have temperature so, its easier to find
That's a great idea! I actually used this advice in my most recent gameplay! Thanks!
I think this is the base game non-dlc ? If i remember the way to deal with meteor shower is by building a space scanner and a row of steel bunker door span across your solar panels. Hooking the space scanner with automation wires to the door so it closes when the scanner detects a meteor shower incoming ect. I don't remember the exact details of automation process.
You're right this is the base game, I plan to do a DLC activated playthrough in the future, figured I should try the base first though. The bunker doors, and some sorta scanner/activator actually makes perfect sense, I even remember looking at the bunker doors wondering about the usage! Thanks again for another helpful chunk of info!
well, I will just say that your solar pannels will not work, the meteors will destroy the solar pannels and the bunker tiles will block the sun, I will leave you discover how to do it work, but as an advice, forget about solar energy till later
Thanks for the tip! Sadly for me I already have recorded episode 27 & 28 as I reply to this (it just takes me a while finding time to edit the videos), so I've already spent a bit too many brain cells on Solar panels finding out about the meteors the hard way lol. But it's really good to know I should be focusing elsewhere for sure!
I'm new here, should I give you some advices? or leave you discover everything?
Welcome! I love tips and hints, and any other comments/ advice you might have! I don't wanna have the whole game given to me(finding some stuff out is part of the fun). But like Raul said some pointers are definitely appreciated! Thanks again for watching!
you need to vacuum out the steam room and seal with a water lock to make sure nothing gets inside the steam room. Some gases that rise above steam blocks the steam generator from operating.
Thanks for the comment! I did eventually put a gas pump and filter in there, but I probably have to mess with it some more to get it working right!
Hey you should look up liquid locks to stop gases from moving around to help keep your oxygen in :)
Interesting! I never would've thought of doing something like that it does seem more efficient than normal airlocks! Thanks for the suggestion!
So this is the part I dislike about the game where the tooltips don't give you very much information. Tempshift plates are background buildings, they can be built behind everything BUT tiles. They cannot occupy the same place as tile. They basically accelerate the rate of heat transfer in a 3x3 radius around them. You're almost there with the Aquatuner/Steam Turbine set up. The aquatuner need to be made out of steel in order to avoid overheating. It needs to be put in an enclosed "Steam" room underneath the steam turbine. The cooled water output from the aquatuner can be looped or snaked around the Steam Turbine to cool down the team turbine and also anything else you want. The steam turbine deletes any excess heat above 257F degrees above the aquatuner turning the steam back into 200F water which can be looped back into the steam chamber. The tempshift plates are normally placed inside the steam chamber to accelerate the dispersal of heat from aquatuner to quickly heat up the water into steam.
Oh so that's how they work! Honestly I agree the tooltips could've been a bit more helpful on that. At least I had sorta the right idea! Now its just laying it out in a way that works! This will help a lot! Thanks again for all your help!
You made it to 350+ cycles on your 2nd playthrough, that's impressive. I don't want to give away too much spoilers because fun part of this game is just figuring out how to interact with the elements and management in your colony. Some tips I can give you that can be of help Remember the infinite food i mentioned at the surface ? You kinda have one roaming around in your base Shove Vole: drop 16kcal of meat when they die, they don't get overcrowded in a room and they do not need to be fed to keep them laying eggs. Also regoliths are the sand on surface of the planetoid. You can use polluted water as a coolant for the Metal Refinery because they have a high vaporization point of 250*F+ and high specific heat capacity You can click on properties of the elements you find in the game to check their Melting point/Vapor point/Heat capacity and heat transfer rate Machineries made of Steel increases their overheat temperature by an extra 360*F Glossy Dreckos are your easiest source of plastic because they only need to be fed on Mealwood, the trick is to keep a layer of O2 or CO2 where your mealwood grows while keeping a layer of Hydrogen on top. You can click on the door and uncheck the < and > arrow to prevent dupes from passing through areas you don't want (scalding hot room or unbreathable room ect) Steel/Exosuit are your gateway into mid-late game industrial Hope this helps!
Wow lots of helpful information! Thanks a ton! I'll start moving towards a shove vole farm! It should've dawned on me that's what you meant by food on the surface, but I wasn't sure. Definitely have to get metal, This is really helpful! Thanks again!
You're getting close, actually in the right direction as well! Aquatuner outputs a massive amount of heat and looks like Steam Turbine can do something like turning that heat into power ? You will never have to worry about your base getting hot again. Also Drecko plays an important part in getting plastic in the early-mid game. Their scales grow only when they are in Hydrogen.
Thanks! I honestly was thinking about the steam turbine in that way, it's just a matter of implementation that's slow going. Really good to know! Thanks again!
The Dreckos need hydrogen to grow their scales, just pump some in the room and that's it, also plant some mealwoods to feed them, deactivate auto-harvest for that mealwood, they just eat from the plant itself
Good to know! I'll do this soon, I wasn't really sure If they had enough hydrogen in that room, or food for that matter! Thanks!
The Rock Crusher is extremely inefficient, try to use it as little as possible, 100Kg of Copper ore = 50 kg Refined Copper
Thanks for the comment, I honestly just realized this recently, and have been planning to get the Metal Refinery up and running, but have been worried about the heat, probably overly so. I'll try to make sure I cut back on Rock Crusher use though!
Dude if you wanna get views you need to do exactly what your video title is saying... people want more straight videos with the solution, not watching you playing lol
Thanks for the feedback, I have been trying to make my videos more condensed, and less drawn out, while trying to keep the gameplay element. I'm not trying to make tutorials or how-to videos, it is a gameplay series after all.
don't worry you're not the only one, i still do this in my playthrough sometimes putting the filter backwards and wondering where my gas went
If you didn't noticed, the air pump for the natural gas is connected to the outlet of the gas filter
I actually just got done recording episode 15 and I finally noticed that! I looked at that gas pipe layout WAY too much to not see it until now! Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it!
oh.. you REALLY need to take a look at your electrical grid: Those wires can only handle a maximum load of 1 kW. If it goes over, random pieces will start burning out, as you have experienced in the past. Solution: You can have more than 1 grid. And you can limit the current to 1 kW by using transformers. That way you won't burn any wires causing blackouts. Instead you might have brown-outs if your appliances require more than what your transformer can deliver - still better than having to fix wires all the time!
Thanks for the comment! I just got around to recording episodes 15-17 recently, and one of the things I did do was fix my grid up a bit! I should've done it much earlier but I finally got to it! Thanks again for your continued support!
@@kendeavor You're welcome. Keep working on it, you're doing great!
Alright.. let's help you out a bit again, since you keep complaining about missing resources: The resources you see in the list, is the resources you currently have access to. If for some reason the path to the "outside" is blocked (eg. your oxygen mask is without oxygen, and as a result can't be used) those resources aren't counted and you will only see the ones that you CAN reach. You could solve this by designating 1 or 2 storage bins in your base to a certain resource (eg. a metal ore) and sweeping up stuff on the outside. Set the maximum storage capacity to however much you want to keep as a reserve: if you want 2 tons of iron ore inside your base, then set it to 2000 kilograms, and a rather high priority. Your dupes will keep it stocked up to 2 tons, so you always have some available. Use only 1 bin, so they won't be sweeping stuff forever. The better option would be to make sure your oxygen masks, or exosuits are always filled up. Don't have 1 or 2 docks. Have 10 docks, so there's at least a couple filled up at all times.
This is great info! It really had me wondering honestly! But it makes perfect sense, they can't use something they can't get to. I honestly didn't think I would need so many docks, but building some more would really help, I was hoping to move over to atmo suits and not have to use masks as much, but at this rate building more docks is probably a much more viable solution. Thanks for pointing this out! In retrospect I don't know why that didn't dawn on me!
Indeed quality gameplay
Also to kill the germs on liquids you need to store the liquid in a reservoir in a full chlorine gas room, if there is other gas the germs will grow again
Thanks! I really appreciate it! Also yeah I haven't quite starting moving chlorine around yet but I might soon, not a ton of negative effects of having a few germs in the water for now it seems.
Generators will not stop when Jumbo batteries are full, especially ones that consume resources like petroleum/natural gas/hydrogen generators. You want a smart battery (just one works fine 200 refined metal) and an automation wire hook up to the generator so it automatically stops the generator running if the battery hit over a certain threshold so your generators don't continue to consume resource.
Good to know, honestly I thought they stopped automatically sorta like how the pumps do. I'll have to try to add a smart battery into my power grid somewhere! Thanks for the help!
Dirt in my opinion is one of the more important resources late game if you're going farming route aka fancy foods, you have the option between just ranching critters for meat forever or the farming route but consume a lot of potentially precious resources. Pip can farm plants naturally (natural wild plants consume no resources but take 4x longer) and you can use them to mass farm but if you want just sustainable source of meat i can give you a hint (If you're playing the classic asteroid), they are on the surface.
Thanks for the info! Honestly it never dawned on me that wild plants wouldn't take resources, I've gone all-in on hydroponics but the water use is showing me its a limited time solution. So it seems some sort of ranching is probably the best option. I'm very close to the surface thanks for the hint! Gotta get my dupes some atmo suits before I go too close!
Still going okay.
Pacus are just free food if you take some time to build a breeding/kill room for them, the problem with Pacus is that if you want to breed them efficiently, it rquires Algae (you can use plant seeds to feed them but slower) which is a valuable resource in your case since you're still learning. But if you just build a small water pond and leave them be they tend to at least lay an egg in their life cycle before they die, resulting in free food. You don't have to be worried about polluted dirt because it doesn't off gas or create any polluted oxygen while submerged.
Thanks! I've been trying to decide a location to put them, I just haven't figured out the exact logistics of moving them without traps yet lol. Really good information though! I appreciate the help!
Hah... your Dr. Jones actually gave you the answer to your icyfan/icemaker question: Hint: The first law of thermodynamics states that no energy can either be created or destroyed. Hint #2: Heat = energy.
I'll definitely put some thought into how this applies to my base cooling, heat is going to be one of those problems I really need a long term solution for I think!
@@kendeavor yup. Aside from the obvious complete exhaustion of things like water, almost every base get killed by one thing alone: HEAT. As heat (aka. energy) cannot be destroyed, you can only move it from one place to another. Heat can also be transformed into another form energy: electricity. But when you use up that electricity, it will turn itself into heat again. But not all energy will be turned back into heat, some of it will be turned into work. There are some exploits that can actually destroy heat, and also some game features like: heat can be lost to the vacuum of space.
There's some thing you should know about ONI: Most of the physics in the game works like real physics, but not all. Some things simply aren't implemented, like heat doesn't nessecarily rise in this game. Convection does happen, but it's just gas-packets that move, as you have already discovered: hydogen is the lightest element in the game and carbon dioxide the heaviest gas. The other gasses wil fill up the space between them, according to their weight/density. Temperature isn't taken into account: hotter packet will not rise compared to colder. They do on the other hand exchange heat between themselves, so eventually the temperature inside a room will equalize. Another interesting game concept is that only 1 type of gas or liquid can ever occupy 1 single space: gases or liquids never mix, no matter the pressures involved. I'll let you figure out how to use this knowledge, while i enjoy watching you play!
Good to know! It did seem like heat wasn't really rising, but instead just spreading outwards. This explains that! Also important to know that gases wont mix! I won't have to worry about anything accidentally turning into a toxic gas or exploding or something now! Thanks again for your continued support!
One of your last dupes was a farter. Bubbles is the one releasing all that natural gas.
Oooh that would explain it lol. It Figures, she's slow walking and farts too.... sigh
25:50 - you made a horrible mistake. Never make unlimited oxygen masks!
Thanks! I totally forgot I was gonna turn it off after seeing if my dupes put it back after use or if it was a consumable! I'll make sure to cancel it the next time I play first thing!
You put in sooo much effort in your videos and too get a little views is crazy you deserve more
Thanks so much! I really really appreciate the support!
I like seeing you mess around, and make the same mistakes we all made. And i don't want to spoil much of your learning curve, as that is part of the fun of this game. But what i will help you with: 1. When placing a row of items (eg. tiles, or ladders) hold down the shift-key to place stuff in a straight line. 2. When you have multiple buildings that you want to set up identically, there is a button called "copy settings" you can use: so you take a farm time, plant a mealwood, then click copy settings and drag your cursor over all the other farm tiles. Saves you a lot of time!
Gosh I wish I had known this! Thanks a million! No more spending 15 minutes planting meal wood and cancelling crooked ladder tiles!
@@kendeavor Save time on the tedious clicking jobs, so you can make all new mistakes. I know all the ones you're going to make, coz i make them too. It serves time to look into what your actually dupes require (check their bios): how muxh oxygen, how much food per cycle and calculate how many plants and oxydizers you need. Lesson 1 you learned in series 1: do NOT accept every single dupe, coz each dupe required more food, more oxygen, more everything. A starting base needs about 8 would be my suggestion. When you get to building refineries and other heavy machinery, you could add more. Check their abilities and only take dupes you really need.
I was about to mention the priority window, but you found it already. You can for example forbid every dupe from researching, except your designated researcher. That way you don't have dupes wasting time at the research station, while your expert can do the job 3 times faster. But be careful: this priority window takes precendence over the numbered priorities. If for example you got a designated digger set to a high digging priority, he will not build anything, until there are no more digging tasks left. He will prefer doing a priority 1 digging task over a priority 9 building task. Lots of players (including myself) will make this mistake every now or then. Keep it up, Kendeavor. You're doing great.
Yeah thanks anyways for mentioning it! As a note, occasionally I will record several hours at once but it takes me a few days to get each episode edited and out, so acting on advice will take a few episodes sometimes! I didn't originally think of the forbidding jobs for each dupe but that's a good idea, especially for stuff like researching, I did accidentally notice that my priority up builder, wont build if she hasn't had it dug out already lol. So lesson learned a bit on that one! Thanks Again for your support I really appreciate it!
Hi! It's good you figured out the schedules. But if you put each dupe on their own schedule and shift them around the day a bit, so no "downtime" overlaps with any other dupe, you can get by fine with just 2 outhouses. You need at LEAST two, so that if one is full, there's always another one available. I usually go with 3 outhouses & 3 washbasins, until get the lavetories set up. Keep going, you're learning as you go.
That's actually a really good idea. It didn't dawn on me that I could set schedules for each dupe instead of all of them at once, I'll look into it for sure! Thanks!
Hey there buddy. I've been watching you videos for the past 2 days. It's refreshing to see a total newbie play this game. Lots of things going wrong for you. If you're up for another try, start playing. I'm sure there people that want to give you hints along the way. Since your colony has already died (i glanced at your last episode) any tips now are already too late.... I feel sorry for you, but you held out quite long before it all went south.
Hey! Thanks for the comment, yeah usually by the time someone can comment stuff is already moving along, but it still helps regardless! Even though Hovel went down, it made a good attempt and hopefully my second try will last much longer lol.
Really good effort for a first run! * Play on medium speed. * Dupes are Dumb. you have to babysit them. * Use the priority screen top right. to tell your dupes what is important for that 1 dupe.
Thanks for the advice! I agree I should've left it on medium speed and I probably wouldn't have lost control of everything like I did. Also the priority system is something I haven't given enough attention to clearly I'll be sure to mess with it a bit the next time I play! Thanks again! 👍
A Little help from me. * Use your Carbon Skimmer to get rid of de carbon dioxide (With a water sieve on a loop it goes for ever) * Outhouses and Washstations are always Priority 9 (This far in the game you should already have plumbed toilets and washstations on a loop with a water sieve) * Only take on new dupes when you have the food and the oxygen to support them * Geysers and Vents are temporarely dorment (a Researcher can examine them ) Keep up the good Work!
Thanks for the advice! I agree I should've had toilets made for sure by then. Carbon skimmer I did eventually get hooked up again, and researching geysers is something I'll do for sure going forward!
