Why is China Hell-Bent on Mining Iron Ore in West Africa?
Iron ore, the main raw material in steelmaking, isn’t in short supply. So why are Xi Jinping and China so desperate to develop an iron ore mine in a remote corner of the West African country of Guinea?

The World's Next Country Is Banking on Copper Mining to Lift Its Economy
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
The Bougainville independence movement began when local landowners expressed their opposition to the Australian colonial government’s policy in regard to the giant Panguna copper mine in the 1960s. Now, more than 50 years later, the success of Bougainville’s looming independence from Papua New Guinea will depend on what it achieves with that very same copper mine. How the USSR Mapped Its Enormous Mineral Resources in World-Record Time

When the USSR embarked on a massive industrialization campaign in the late 1920s, its leaders knew they would need to find substantial mineral resources to achieve their goals. This is the story of how the Soviet Union mapped the mineral resources of one-sixth of the world’s landmass in mere decades. How Botswana Beat Africa's Mineral Resource Curse

One country in Sub-Saharan Africa has managed to completely defy the African resource curse: Botswana. How the World’s Largest Copper Deposit Stayed Hidden for Years (And Why Its Discovery Matters Today)

One of the most important mineral discoveries of all time was that of Escondida in Chile’s Atacama Desert, today the world’s largest copper mine. But this enormous copper deposit might never have been found, if not for out-of-the-box thinking from a legendary American explorer. Why did Lowell get so little? There is an important story about how transactions work. I know because I found a copper porphyry myself and i JV’d it to a giant mining outfit….twice actually. The discovery rate is considered too low because discoverers are not funded well. Our project is of course in Chile….and it is part of a whole new area thought to be uninteresting. Ha. We have found new Cu!

      There isn’t much action at the prospectors tent during PDAC in Toronto. I was there offering the project twice and once online. The statistics say mining is underfunded in general. That’s probably why it causes so much grief even though it brings money and jobs say to Botswana recently.

    I'm an expat BCL mine child, I was born in Arawa and we lived in Panguna. My dad was Electrical engineer for BCL. It makes me so happy to imagine that Bougainville will become autonomous and independent finally, but mining is a risky business so I truly hope that the mistakes of the past are rectified and it works out for them. Tourism is especially important too, it is a paradise island and would benefit from more people knowing it exists! I'd visit in a heartbeat if I could, sadly I live in the UK and no chance of finding the money to go, but would recommend it to anyone who can. But a warning, you might never want to leave 😊

    China's dependence on Australian iron ore makes it vulnerable in the US trade war against China. The US has already taken measures to attack China's economic development by banning the sales of semi-conductor chips to China. The US could at any time instruct Australia to cut off supplies of iron ore to China. If China can develop alternate sources of supply, like the potential iron ore mines in Guinea, it takes this economic weapon away from the US.

    Reopening the mine would be a tragedy for Bougainville and its people. It will mean the same thing as Grasberg in West Papua, which is even more of a catastrophe than Bougainville Copper was. What do you think the civil war in Bougainville was about? Do you really think you can avoid the environmental, social damage and greed of the past?

    • @simonsmatthew
      @simonsmatthew 6 месяцев назад

      By the way Grasberg was also run by Rio Tinto. You need to talk to the Free Papua movement about the consequences of mining and relationships between huge Anglo-American multinationals and governments. It inevitably leads to corruption. You might want independence from PNG. That is fine. I support that. But they are facing the same battles as you against greater powers and money. You need to know who your friends are. The Solomons are in a similar battle - and the people there are losing.

    In 1988 the BRA declared that unless BCL paid them 14 Billion Australian dollars they would stop the mine operating. Before any negotiations could start, the BRA started to attack BCL assets. The BRA did the vast majority of damage to the island. There are many factual errors in this video. ''The environment'' was dreamed up by left wing spin doctors to try to justify the crazy and racist behaviour of the BRA and its supporters. It was only ever about racism & money.

    Guinea must demand for the processing of its iron ore to produce steel for export, within Guinea. So should all other African countries! Guinea must learn from Tanzania. During the reign of Nyerere in Tanzania iron ore and coal was discovered and he refused for it to be exploited until a particular time in future when Tanzanian intellectual and technical capacity is developed to have control and benefit from their minerals. During the time of Pombe Magafuli presidency all minerals which were produced in Tanzania were also being processed in Tanzania. Learn also from Muammar Gaddafi he made oil to support his people and before he was killed Libya was the highest socially developed country in the world. No African country should sanction the theft of it's minerals by foreigners. That will be the perpetuation of Colonialism and Imperialism.

    • @sulaak
      @sulaak Год назад

      Nyerere needed to learn more about industrial matters; without the mines, how can you build a steel plant. Steel and Aluminium plants require significant investment in Electricity, logistics, ports and human development. The Guinean government insisted that a new railway and port be part of the project; the government has also taken a significant share in the mining and logistics of the project, which is valued at £20 billion. Nothing is stopping Guinea from building its own Aluminium and Steel plants or inviting investors to locate their Aluminium smelter and Steel plant in Guinea once this project has been completed. Over the last 10 years, Guinea has invested in building hydroelectric dams to support industrial development.

For decades China and Australia were easygoing buddies but suddenly things became hostile in recent years. Even somday China has successfully developed the Iron ore in Guinea, still there will be a war in the Indian Ocean. When China has to present a massive navy escorting these materials to China soil. A big conflict is ahead of human world.
