Performance & Life
Просмотров 53 месяца назад
Here's a short extract from a free community event I did for School of Human Kind a little while ago. In it, I'm responding to some insights from one of the audience, drawing links between the deep techniques of performance, and the process of living an authentic, effective and aligned life. It's part of my new work on 'What Actors Know'. You can find a link to the full video in the comments. I...
6 ways they try to stop you being an artist: 1 They buy you

6 ways they try to stop you making art: 2 They trivialise you. They try to keep you in your box by telling you what you do doesn’t matter, is just a bit of fun, is something anyone could do….. 6 Ways they try to stop you being an artist: 4 Deny you knowledge
Просмотров 384 месяца назад
Why study drama if you’re not going to be a professional actor? Why have music in schools and universities when there are higher paid jobs out there? Remove access to performance from schools and university. Focus the next generation on more ‘useful’ things instead. You could accept the powerful genuinely believed that - except they don’t apply the same logic to the schools their kids go to. Th...
good or bad?
4 месяца назад
Is my art any good? What if I get it wrong? Was my performance a success? Good/Bad Right/Wrong Success/Failure Binaries. Other people define us, and we define ourselves, with either/or thinking. The problem? It’s pretty much meaningless. Art does not easily fit into simple definitions of good or bad. It’s much more complex, individual and important than that. www.johnbritton.co
never justify your art
Просмотров 14 месяца назад
Never, never, never, never feel you have to justify your art. A poem needs no justification. Music has its own value. A painting or performance make the world a richer place. To create is human. Artists see the world and re-imagine it. That’s as human as it gets. People will demand you justify the time you spend on your art: ‘What’s the point of that?’ ‘Why waste time on something that’s not a ...

is art worth my time
Просмотров 24 месяца назад
Is it worth my time? ‘How much time should I spend on making my art?’ ‘Am I wasting time if my creativity doesn’t make me rich?’ We’re told ‘time is money’. We’re told that we shouldn’t waste time on stuff that doesn’t earn a living. We’re told life is hustle. We’re told time is a comodity that we exchange for cash. The whole damn world, turned into a market place - one thing exchanged for anot...
intrinsic validation
Просмотров 74 месяца назад
There’s nothing wrong with wanting validation. As artists in any discipline, most of us want to connect and communicate. We want our work to be appreciated, admired, enjoyed and - if we’re trying to live by our art - paid for. What if that external validation doesn’t come? Too often when we don’t get the connection and praise we’re looking for, we withdraw support from ourselves. We lose faith....

Dear Patty left us in the middle of our lives Her husband, brother’s, sister’s, mother’s grief I can’t describe People say she is at peace now though I know she cannot rest Till somehow we stop crying and remember we’re still blessed By the things she wanted for us And helped us all pursue They’re all still in her vision Now with quite a better view Don’t forget where you were going Your dream’s your only path Patty’s peace will be in knowing the brass ring is in your grasp

Well said... Constant search for illusory dust, never satisfied, never just HERE, where all is. The more I "travel" towards myself, the more all that is "outside" disappears, vanishes. You are healthily alone, with all that you are, which automatically shifts you to take responsibility, value yourself, not even listen and/ or take to heart, what surroundings think of you, feel about you. All my life I lived according to the compas of others, now, for the first time, I feel that the wheels are turning, for the better good of all. Thank you John. Your expression of speech and feeling is genuine and honest. With regards, Nico

thank you for your comment Nico. Ultimately we all exist within a network of relationships - with other humans and with the natural world. Unless we are strong enough to hold our place in that network and not constantly be swayed by the opinions of others, we have no real contribution to make....

Thank you for sharing. The contribution part got to me... Inhuman workspace (or place if you prefer) relations... It just saddens me. Now the only question is: Where do I go from here? Of course, there is a factor of fear, but I feel I cannot go on like this. There is no moral nor ethical value in it no more. I guess that elderly homes have become anything but... A place, where they become invisible. The more one sees, the harder it gets, doubting yourself, your sanity. And for what? Thank you and with regards, N

Hi Nicos. We have (collectively) created and enabled a system where money and efficiency have taken precedence over humanity and compassion. The change must start with our personal decision to HAVE hope and TAKE action - a combination of personal work and structural work (how you see yourself and what you choose to do about it). Despair, though attractive, takes us only to paralysis. If you would like to talk about either personal work or actions to move beyond the despair, be in touch: john@johnbritton.co

Great conversation. I love learning through conversations ! Great to hear more of both of your experiences and perspective. A learning I took from this video I am going to contemplate on today is to let go of the control of how others perceive me (the art) I can express myself and live how I chose to but I can not control how the view views or what they take from what I do ! This thought is actually quite freeing !

    • @johnbritton1964
      @johnbritton1964 2 года назад

Thanks for your comment. Yes in many ways it is freeing to realise that however hard you try you don't get to control how others respond to you or the art you put out into the world. It also means perhaps that you have to take MORE responsibility for the details of your own actions and work..... I hope your work is going well...
