EC&M Tech Talk — Article 210 Branch Circuits
In this Tech Talk Randy Barnett pulls out specific information from NEC Article 210 Branch Circuits Not Over 1000 Volts ac, 1500 Volts dc, Nominal. Article 210 is a large article full of detailed content addressing some of the most common electrical wiring and maintenance tasks electrical workers perform.
In section 1 General Information Randy spends a good bit of time defining the different types of branch circuits, ratings, related articles, multiwire branch circuits, voltage limitations and conductor identification requirements. Section 2 covers the requirements for ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI’s) and arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI’s) describing their operational differ...

Moving Violations Video No. 327: Broken and Buried LFMC
Просмотров 55114 дней назад
Russ LeBlanc comes across some partially buried and broken LFMC. This installation will need to be replaced in accordance with Sec. 350.2. In addition, it’s unclear if the conduit is marked as suitable for direct burial. There is a potential violation there. What do you think about the conduit? Is it suitable for direct burial?
EC&M Asks - Are Annexes a Requirement of NFPA Standards?
Просмотров 16721 день назад
In Episode 41 of “EC&M Asks,” a video series featuring subject matter experts (SMEs) answering reader-submitted questions regarding popular electrical topics, Ron Widup, vice chairman, board of directors, and senior advisor of technical services for Shermco Industries, covers if annexes are a requirement of all NFPA standards and, if not, why they are included in NFPA 70E. He goes on to explain...

    We had a similar house like this in my old jurisdiction. The single story original dwelling was raised and a new ground level story was added below. You can see the old abandoned exterior door. A lot more wrong with this than just the panel access.

    Wow - yikes! I agree with a previous comment - how did this get by the utility company!? At least around here, they have very strict requirements for metering access, plus not allowing meters within 3' of windows, etc. With the different paint schemes, I'm wondering if this formerly 1-story building was "lifted" and another floor placed under it, such that the existing meter and service entrance got raised up by the builder without utility knowledge? Just wow!

    How do you access the house in general- the doors all lead to free air... Must have literally raised the entire house and left it as is

    Every electrical contractor new construction, remodel service should make their employees take an NFP70 training. Most do not require their employees to do it. Electrical remodel jobs are extremely dangerous. Most of the time you have no idea what you are getting into on the demolition. Always very with a tick voltage detector that the circuit is off before demolition. If you can't test, verify at the panelboard. Don't take your supervisor word that a circuit is de-energized.

    • @ncameron7
      @ncameron7 Месяц назад

      Note- tick tracers give false readings. We require a multimeter and for the competent trade to verify by using live- dead-live. Use your meter on a known active circuit. Check the circuit you are going to work on to assure it shows 0v. Then check your meter again on a known live circuit.

    I never had an issue putting a taper lock back on after prying it off. They can be squeezed back together and there is typically a set screw. At least on the motors I replaced and needed to reuse parts from the old motor.

    Why test a motor insulation that is only rated for 600V at 1000V? Will you not cause damage to a new motors insulation? Should you hold the Megaometer whilst doing the test without gloves? Thanks for the class.

    • @electricrb
      @electricrb 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comments and good questions. Since we will apply 480v - 600v to the motor we want to make sure it will withstand at least that voltage level. Spikes and surges will definitely occur during operation. The megohmmeter must receive an inspection daily before use and meet the inspection requirements of NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety Maintenance in the Workplace. As long as the meter itself has passed the inspection and is located outside of the restricted approach boundary of 18" or 2'2" depending on the voltage level, insulated gloves would not be required.

    I'm working on an install that has 240V AC circuits that supply a small enclosure which charges a tracker motor for a tracking PV array. Hangers are being used to route PV source circuit conductors within the array, and it would be ideal to use the same hanger to route our 240AC circuits. The AC circuits would be single conductor PV wire. If the cables have the same insulation rating, would this be permitted by 690.31(B)(1)? My interpretation is that these AC conductors are part of a PV system and do not need separation from DC source circuit wiring.
