Howdy! I have a channel that mostly does Marisa tutorials, and I’d like to answer some of your questions/give advice. The biggest thing that would help you right now is to just hit confirm Marisa’s medium punch target combo. What I mean by that is to only do the launcher if it hits. On block you should do L Gladius. L Gladius is safe on block, and the launcher is very punishable. 1:48 No, you don’t need a fight stick. Some of the best players in the world use a regular old game pad. Second, you’ve put too much of an emphasis on how important combos are in fighting games. There are other things that are way more important. For example, deciding what moves to use in neutral and continuing your pressure after you knock them down. 8:01 This is going to sound rude, and I promise I don’t mean for it to, but Smash players absolutely have memorized combos with long inputs. The only reason you might not think so is that the game hides the technical aspects of it to casual players in a way that SF does not. Your description of “just doing a down throw and then jumping at them and doing some other move” only sounds simpler because your brain isn’t breaking it down into the physical actions needed to do that. You aren’t saying “I press Z, then down, then I press y and forward at the same time, and then I have to push the right stick either forward or up depending on where my opponent is”. Once you play traditional fighting games long enough (and honestly, it doesn’t take that long) your brain will stop thinking “I need to do quarter circle forward and press x” you’ll just think “do light Gladius”. 10:53 No. I would not advise you to play other characters. Maybe just go into the character tutorials in game to see what the game tells you their moves do, but it’s generally better to focus on one character to learn. Otherwise it’s like “I’m not really good at guitar, do you think it would help to learn banjo?” 12:13 The old games didn’t start with that many characters. The rosters of SFV and SF4 grew dramatically through DLC. 13:12 I’m probably some dude. Or it’s 801Strider.
