"I Never Will Marry" by The Carter Family - sad. "Red Georgia Clay" by John Anderson - sad, yet happy.
Dude… what is happening here? How did I not know about this channel that you started? I remember connecting when I did my Favorite 200 Albums list (so many regrets), and watching your favorites. Anyway, Darren, now subbed! Great response! Thoroughly enjoyed this and no physical media shown! Not necessary as the answers were excellent and well thought out. The Louvin Brothers could get dark! I need to give that Dead Man Walking soundtrack some attention. I saw the film back around the time it came out, but never picked up the soundtrack. Congrats on the new addition to your family! Cheers! ✌🏻
Let me tell you, if you wonder why you do these. I’d never been able to connect with Gram Parsons but your all time albums countdown was so persuasive for Gilded Palace of Sin I ordered it blind and gave it the full cold beer lights out treatment and got waylaid. One of the fastest risers up my own ranks. So great I can hardly believe it.
@lostmixtapes was the other channel with Dead Man Walking.
Yes!
Your no 8 & 9 aside, these albums are all great, great, great.
Van is still producing great albums, his singing got even better, his musicians are always impressive. For my taste, best albums are mostly after 1990. But I am probably the only one 🙂
@@stearm2847 I have Healing Game way up there. I’m all in on Live at Orangefield too.
magic time and avalon sunset is the best after moondance
Van the greatest living dutchman
I listen mostly to Van's post-80 production. Avalon Sunset and Poetic Champions the only two of the 80s I listen on a regular basis.
You are outdated, left behind, pal!!!! Van beats all the decades since 1964 to this day, 2024 AD!!!
Nice, hope you do the next three decades too
Thanks for posting. Common one would by my top pick. They are all classic albums
Hi, my ranking has changed a bit over the years, Astral weeks which was my number one has fallen upon hard times, my number 1 right now is Veedon Fleece, which has never been far from the top 3, poetic champions compose, common one, saint Dominic preview would follow, Astral weeks is hoping for better days 😂
I do not understand all the love for Common One. I cannot get into that one. I would definitely put Poetic Champions compose higher, as well as Irish Heartbeat.
I always thought the same about No Guru, No Method, No Teacher but the songs are so good that they overcome the sound quality. Beautiful Vision would be my 80s pick too
Great hat! #jokermen
In the 70's Van was the greatest even above Dylan. "Veedon Fleece" is an absolute, timeless and underrated masterpiece. My second favorite VM album only behind "Astral Weeks". Great, great too are "Moondance", "Saint Dominic's Preview" and Into The Music". And, of course, "It's Too Late To Stop Now" is my all time favorite live album alongside Sam Cooke's "Live At The Harlem Square Club, 1963". Great video!
Many thanks for sharing your choices, I would pretty much agree with you, although I think all his 70's albums are fantastic. Like you I really enjoy listening to them all on vinyl & I think I appreciate his music more as a result. On a personal note, I have to admit until 2007 I wasn't a huge fan but that year I was working in Northern Ireland & my boss was a huge Van fan & I became hooked on his music thanks to her. The place I lived in is actually mentioned in his song Coney Island off his 1989 album Avalon Sunset.
Beautiful Vision would be my number one from that decade too - stunning album! No Guru and Poetic Champions Repose would be higher in my rankings, Avalon Sunset lower. Thanks for the video.
Loved it.Van is my favorite artist.I agree with you about Bulbs.I also like Van's more searching songs.Veedon Fleece, I totally 110% agree its a Masterpiece. St .Dominic's Preview....Brilliant...Bob Seger does a Superb version as Well as I've been workin' by Van.❤ ❤ Seen and planning to see and hear Tge man 2024 and beyond. He is The Master❤!Thanks for putting the good vibes out there for Van😊
Blasphemy. PCC is the top tier of the 80s.
Excellent review of his 70s albums! Seen him play many times in Ireland through the last 4 decades. Never disappointed!
Thanks for checking it out (Van 70's reference)! Envious of all the shows you've seen! What were some highlights of the live shows?
Hi great video that introduced me to lots of new music, most of which I have added to Qobuz and will absorb over the coming weeks. Couldn’t find anything on Pete Merle strangely??
Hi, i started watching your videos, have you done yet a Bob Dylan ranking? My 10 most listened to albums are at the moment: Bob Dylan blood on the tracks, Gene Clark no other, Laura Nyro new york Tendaberry, Love forever Changes, Donovan sunshine superman, Neil Young after the gold rush, Dusty Springfield in Memphis, Joni Mitchell Blue, Nick Drake Pink Moon, Marvin Gaye what's going on
I’ve never heard Laura Nyro. I will check that out! It would be an undertaking to rank Bob Dylan.
I like your choices. My list : Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon Supertramp - Crime of the century Steely Dan - Can´t buy a thrill The Smiths - The Queen is dead The Waterboys - This is the Sea Pavlov´s Dog - Pampered Menial Smashing Pumpkins - Adore Jethro Tull - Songs from the Wood Television - Marquee Moon Neutral Milk Hotel - In the aeroplane over the sea Pixies - Doolittle Sufjan Stevens - Illinois Pink Floyd - The Wall Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms Gang of Four - Entertainment!
Great list with some (relatively) recent releases. Love the Waterboys and Neutral Milk Hotel selections. Steely Dan is a blind spot for me and I haven't heard of Pavlov's Dog (the band anyways).
While I realize it is more esoteric and specialized than any other Van Morrison album, COMMON ONE is not only the best Van Morrison album of the 1980s, it's the best album of his entire career. But everyone's taste is unique and I also love AVALON SUNSET and BEAUTIFUL VISION and I appreciate you saying "My personal" choices and "I understand why you might feel differently." You are a wise man, if an imperfect critic. ;-)
Thank you for featuring country music!! Been looking for a channel that includes country music, followed!!
I would not argue too hard with any of that. I used to own all those albums back in the day. But you have got to have Astral Weeks in there if only for just Into the Mystic even if it wasn't technically the 70s. The top 2 is a dilemma and I might just swap Veedon F with St Dominics Preview round as number one. But I would no doubt change my mind tomorrow. Good list and well presented. cheers.
That Nick Lowe is fantastic imo. It introduced me to Ivory Joe Hunter.
Inarticulate Speech of the Heart is a mesmerizing album. It’s been my favorite since it was released. Great ranking!
Great list Avalon Sunset is often dismissed but I love it to I think of it and Enlightenment as a pair and often to listen to both in a sitting .
I need to listen to Enlightenment more than I do.
Great listing As a music fan born in Belfast, Van is an obvious hero. He lives near me (when he’s home) and I have bumped into him on several occasions ( never daring to speak - If you know, you know😊) The most memorable was on the coast path at Crawfordsburn. He was wearing a trench coat and trademark hat. Made eye contact and the look told me not to speak. A slight nod and he moved on
Good on ya for leaving the man be. The songs, the work are enough.
Lucinda Williams is a home run.

Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley and Allison Kraus
I've always been a fan of what is now referred to as "classic" country music - to me it is THE country music. But I'm not familiar with the Louvin Brothers. However, I know that my Daddy (AKA as "Paw-Paw" to many, including Sarah Mac) could have told me ALL about them, had I known to ask. I guess I'm more of a traditionalist, because my pick for saddest country song - and it's a hard choice to make - is George Jones' He Stopped Loving Her Today.
Satan Is Real: One of the greatest album covers of all time.
I like your Bob Dylan cap. Bob Dylan is incredible, i remember his music back in the 1960s / 70s / 80s and onwards. His contribution to popular music has been immense.
Bob changed my world way back when I was 15 and I've been along for the ride since. The hat is via the Jokermen Podcast.
@@hillbillypillars I like the song Jokerman.
I’m so glad I found your video! I am a 74 year old woman who has been listening to Van since the beginning and, for me, when he is connected to his muse, he is unbeatable. I have great respect for your list, even though mine would be a little different. Into The Music would get my spot for #1. Side B is just untouchable for me and includes, my sometime favorite Van song And The Healing Has Begun. I also love Veedon Fleece and St. Dominics Preview, which are not as well known as Tupelo Honey and Moondance. I have worked at concerts for many years and have seen Van at least 30 times, and some of those shows were so amazing that it could put you into an altered state of consciousness. I was at two of the shows that were released as live recordings, A Night In San Francisco and Austin City Limits. I sadly stopped working his shows at least 10 years ago, because it was just too sad to hear him only going through the motions. He actually had a clock on the stage so he knew exactly how long he had to play to meet his obligation.
Thanks for sharing. That's incredible that you were at A Night in San Francisco!
It was an absolutely incredible evening!
Great video! Just getting into his records now. Some great stuff
Thanks! Got any favorites, stand out tracks yet?
Great list Hillbilly. Agree with you about Moondance -though like all his albums it has some great songs. I've had a go at listing my top 10 VM albums on my channel. My list, in reverse order, for the 70s studio albums would be: 9. His Band etc 8. Period of Transition 7. Hard nose the highway 6. Moondance 5. Wavelength 4. St Dominics Preview 3. Tupelo Honey 2. Into the music 1. Veedon Fleece
Wouldn't argue with any of your ranks which speaks to what an incredible run he had. The more I explore and the further I dive into Van the more I'm convinced that Veedon Fleece is a hallmark album.
Beautiful Vision is immaculate. I would have placed No guru .. a bit higher - and "Haunts of Ancient Peace" from Common One deserves a remark.....but that is just me ...interesting video...thanks
Do a RUclips search for Van playing “She gives me Religion” at Agape International Spiritual Center. He played preformed it there last year. I think it’s a better version than the recorded one. It’s a little more upbeat. I have to disagree with you on the ranking on poetic champions compose it’s one of my all-time favorite albums from anybody.
I will check that version of “She Gives Me Religion” out! I know many hold Poetic Champions in high regard. I need to spend more time with it.
@OnceTheyNamedMeiWasnt I love Love, Lover and Beloved. I got to see him sing it live twice now. I think he might release a gospel album with the Agape … we’ll see. Absolutely love Van Morrison.
Big Iron and El Paso! Marty rules
Lucinda is classic Americana! Luv her
Time out of mind great LP
The man Modern Times interesting! Dylan #1 songwriter period
Love Nick solo w Little Village and Rockpile he is like 👍 Jack Bruce of 80’s!
I luv that Van album and saw that tour in Chicago in 78 Beginnings
Beautiful Vision is a seriously underrated album. Good picks 👍
Great that you did this list! Completely agree with you..Beautiful Vision is the #1 of the 80´s! Such a great album..
