Welcome to my RUclips channel.
After starting organ lessons at the age of 16, I went on to study at Trinity College of Music, London and then privately with Jane Parker-Smith who was and will always be a huge influence on my playing style. My repertoire consists mostly of French romantic stuff but I will have a go at anything if it takes my fancy! These days, playing the organ is more of a hobby than a profession but I hope you enjoy my performances, and if so, please subscribe to my channel for weekly postings. Thanks!

A Christmas Organ Recital
🎶 This seasonal offering features four of my favourite Christmas pieces for the organ. 🎶
Christmas Prelude on 'Divinum Mysterium', John R. Watkinson
Prelude on 'Greensleeves', Richard Purvis
Offertoire sur Deux Noëls, Alexandre Guilmant
Carillon de Westminster, Louis Vierne
Now you might say Carillon de Westminster is not a Christmas piece and you'd be right of course. I simply wanted something that had a riot of bells clanging at the end of it, and I could only think of this and Dupré's Variations Sur un Noël which is too long to include in this compilation. Maybe next year..!
Anyway, please enjoy and I wish you all a very merry Christmas. 🎄

Mystique, (Trois Nouvelles pièces), Charles-Marie Widor
Просмотров 602 месяца назад
In his final work, written when he was 90, Widor bids farewell to a remarkable 60 year career as a musician. This sublime middle movement recalls the incense filled atmosphere of Sunday Mass at Saint Sulpice. I imagine Widor would have improvised many a piece in this style during his time as organist there and for me, this is him capturing that mystical atmosphere.
Finale, (1er Symphonie), L. Vierne
Просмотров 1112 месяца назад
Perhaps Vierne's most famous organ piece, this celebrated jewel of the organ repertoire was described by Vierne himself as his own Marseillaise! Played here on the Metzler organ in the Annakirche, in Düren, the piece really comes to life and is as thrilling to play as it is to listen to. Enjoy! 🇫🇷
Clair de lune, L Vierne

Clair de lune (Moonlight) is a poem by Paul Verlaine written in 1869. The poem has inspired many pieces of music, perhaps most famously the third movement of Debussy's Suite Bergamasque. Vierne's composition is arguably one of his most impressionistic pieces, and to my mind, perfectly captures the essence of the poem. The music comes from his 2nd suite of 24 Pièces de Fantasie (op. 53, no. 5). ...
Toccata alla Rumba, A. Willscher

I don't know what to say about this piece except that I bloody love playing it (even if it does make me feel a bit sick). 😅 It's a bit like being on a very fast rollercoaster and once you start, there's no getting off, and you're hanging on for dear life! I don't play much contemporary music but this is most definitely a welcome exception. All I can say is thank you Andreas Willscher for writin...
Toccata in G major, T. Dubois
Просмотров 3263 месяца назад
Perhaps Dubois' most famous organ piece, his Toccata in G major, is a dazzling showpiece and a staple of the organ repertoire. This was one of the first big toccatas I learned when I was starting out in my teens, and probably helped kickstart my love of the French romantic organ repertoire. Hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed charging my way through it!
Romance, Symphonie No. 4, L. Vierne
Просмотров 1564 месяца назад
Taken from his fourth organ symphony, written in 1914, Vierne gives us perhaps his finest melody in this, his fourth movement, making beautiful use of the quieter organ stops such as flutes and strings. All technical analysis aside, for me, every note of this piece is bathed in impressionism. Ironic given the title of the piece, as impressionism eschewed the excesses of the romantic era! Perhap...
Prelude in B minor, J. S. Bach

This beautiful, sumptuous even, piece started life as the prelude in E minor from the 48 Preludes and Fugues. The Russian conductor, pianist and arranger Alexander Siloti took the piece, transposed it into B minor, tweaked a few things and essentially created a whole new piece of music. This arrangement by myself for organ, gives the piece an even more luxurious feel by using the strings and fl...
Choral No. 3 in A minor, C. Franck

One of my favourite pieces of music, and in my opinion, one of the greatest works ever written for the organ. This is César Franck's last composition, which he completed in September 1890. Franck had suffered an accident in May of that year and was convalescing in Nemours. Six months later he contracted a respiratory infection and died in November. Whilst I find it profoundly sad that Franck ne...
Praeludium, Fuga & Ciacona, BuxWV 137, D. Buxtehude
Просмотров 1724 месяца назад
A little bit out of my comfort zone this one, but I piece I thoroughly enjoy playing. Dieterich Buxtehude was a Danish or German organist and composer of the Baroque period, whose works are typical of the North German organ school. His exact birthplace is unknown. As a composer who worked in various vocal and instrumental idioms, Buxtehude's style greatly influenced other composers, such as Joh...
Sortie in B flat, L. J. Alfred Léfebure-Wély
Просмотров 1024 месяца назад
There is so much one can say about Léfebure-Wély and his music, but the best thing I've read about him comes from an article about the organ builder, Cavaillé-Coll on the French government website which calls Lefébure-Wély an "exceptionally talented dandy who, better than anyone, had grasped the musical potential of the new tones and combinations to create music that was thrilling, renewing, im...
Serenade, D. Bourgeois
Просмотров 634 месяца назад
Derek Bourgeois famously wrote this delightful miniature for his wedding in 1965. Rather than the conventional 2/4 feel of a march, he wrote the piece in 11/8 and if that wasn't enough, he throws in a little bit in the middle in 13/8. It all adds to the fun nature of the music. The piece has become really popular with brass bands and is probably how you would most likely hear it today.
Choral No. 1 in E, C. Franck
Просмотров 694 месяца назад
Written in the last year of his life, César Franck never got to play the Trois Chorals in public. There is some debate surrounding the dedication of this choral which Durand published as being dedicated to Gigout. However Vincent d'Indy insisted that Franck intended it be attributed to Guilmant. I guess we will never know! In a letter to a friend Franck said, 'I have written a long organ piece ...
1er Offertoire de St. Cécile, J. Grison
Просмотров 534 месяца назад
Jules Grison is perhaps best known for his Toccata in F but this first Offertoire written in 1888 is on the grandest of scales and I can only imagine that the congregation at Reims would have been so excited on hearing it, they gave very generously to the plate! For me it's in part theatrical, (Grison clearly liked his big melodies), but quite difficult technically with lots of octave writing a...

Huit Pièces Modales, No. 1 en Rè, J. Langlais
A lovely piece ❤
Another lovely piece and so well played ❤
Lovely ☺️
Thank you! 😊
😮I’m exhausted just listening to that ❤
Bravo.. .What a fun work!
Thanks! Isn’t it!
Beautifully played, David. One of Vierne's most beautiful slow movements. Thank you.
Thank you. 😊
If you’re wondering why the picture is different on the thumbnail it’s because the original image I used isn’t of Buxtehude, it turns out it’s an imposter! It’s definitely Buxtehude on the thumbnail.
I’ve missed your playing, so glad you’ve decided to do this ❤
