Review: Overall rating 4/10 The best part of the story is that it is grammatically solid. No weird sentences or random misspellings. Other than than that this "edgy". There are four characters the author focuses on and all four have a single trait each. 1) the human leader is ALWAYS saying/being determined and inspirational, he has no other qualities. 2) the human scientist can be summarized as "we didn't design x to y, but...well, I have an idea." 3) the enemy admiral's entire purpose in the story is to be chewed out by the emperor and to repeat "the humans aren't what they seem, but I have to follow orders". and 4) the emperor who's ONLY personality trait is that he wants to invade or destroy earth. We get zero character growth/development, we get zero context for the events in the story other than "empire bad, humans good". The humans don't actually struggle, they just succeed at everything. the whole story is set up in an A-B-A-B format where "A" is overdramatically expositing and "B" is an "action" sequence that's incredibly light on detail. It's one of the two things and nothing else. The humans win and the last 11 minutes of the whole story is them patting themselves on the back and the Emperor behaving like a 90's saturday morning cartoon villain. I honestly was expecting a "I'll get you next time, Gadget!" type phrase with obligatory fist shaking and an angry meowing space cat. It reads like a college english freshman with the literary taste of a 13 year old boy wrote it. The most frustrating part of all of this is that the author has created contradictory narratives that create unclear expectations. There's such a big point made about how backwater and primitive humans are, yet somehow not only are the human weapons better, so are the tactics. For some reason, a galaxy wide empire made of who knows how many different species on who knows how many worlds with FTL tech got beat by an EMP, a shield, and a single covert team who nailed their mission on the first try with ZERO casualties. It is okay to flip the script and have a character perceived as weak turn out to be strong, Jackie Chan made a whole career out of that trope and it's a very fun and beloved one. However, successfully executing that trope requires foreshadowing which there was none. It requires a subtle build up, which there was none. It requires a sudden and intense flip of expectations which there was none. I think in this case the author's ambition is more than their understanding of how tactics and war works because the empire at no point was a threat. It is like when you read a 13 year old writing self-insertion fan fiction, their totally original OC tapdances their way through the story with no struggles and always looks cool...just like how this story was written. Now, all that said, this story doesn't need to be pitched in the trash, but it does need a re-scripting from the ground up. 1) let's get a slightly larger cast of characters on both sides. 2) let's get a little development on all characters. Motivations, personalities, strengths and weaknesses. 3) treat the characters like people and not cardboard cutouts, the admiral didn't just whoopsie-daisy herself to that position, the emperor isn't an idiot who just ignores her. They're intelligent people, let that intelligence be the threat through their actions, not just saying "we're smart". 4) take time away from the action to let us see the people. Cut the speeches and dramatic reactions and show us what the characters are doing through conversation, not expository narration. 5) keep the theme of being underestimated, but make the humans actually look threatened. They need to loose for a while, there needs to be stakes, suffering has to happen for the audience to feel the emotional attachment. 6) in the action sequences focus on making each one a micro-narrative. The black-ops team invades the ship? Cool, follow them. Where are they going, what are they doing? What goes wrong? Where do they struggle? How do they complete a "second act twist"? How do they pull victory from the jaws of defeat? To the author, I recommend reading "Tarkin" by James Luceno. It's a great examination of how an "evil organization" works and looks competent. They're not just out to be "evil" they have goals and they see themselves as the good guys despite all the murder and subjugation they do. For world building I recommend the Commonwealth Saga by Peter F Hamilton, it's like if Tolkien wrote Sci-Fi. There's TONS of world building there and you see how different groups have different philosophies and how they mesh in some ways and conflict with each other in other ways. You can also read the Spellmonger series (Terry Mancour) for good world building, he does a good job of making local feudal problems feel properly scaled against larger levels of government (dukedom and kingdom). Another good book series to study is the Darth Bane trilogy by Drew Karpyshyn (also lead writer for the Mass Effect games 1, 2, and 3.) So why 4/10? At face value, my gripes should put this at a 2/10, but I feel like there's a really good story buried in here and hope the author comes back to this some day and gives us a better version of it. Also, to the person who made this video: 1) PLEASE use a better narrator, this AI narrator is awful. Perhaps hire a real person? There's plenty desperate VA's trying to get their break who have good rates. 2) if you got the author's permission to do this, then your whole "fair use" thing doesn't apply here, it's not fair use, it's licensed use. If you're really supporting the author, then please also link to the original story to credit that person. 3) if you are the author, then that "fair use" bit DEFINATELY doesn't apply because it's your story. There, hope this review saved y'all 40-something minutes of your life. I know I'm not getting mine back.
