This is the entirety (minus two short omissions) of Q&A session/masterclass/book signing that Dave King gave at Lawrence University on February 1st, 2013. I've put together a guide to the video, but Dave covers many topics within each of these talking points that address many different issues and ideas.
0:04:40 - Punk mentality
0:10:42 - Influences
0:23:30 - Bad press
0:34:23 - Advice for younger musicians
0:42:26 - The Fringe
0:52:33 - Creating your own voice
0:58:40 - The term "creative music" (and Stanley Crouch)
1:13:29 - Request for solo piano
1:15:26 - Legitimatizing your aesthetic

Dave is a genius
"We only have about an hour or so..." - proceeds to speak for about two hours. Classic drummer time keeping. 😆
A lot of truth being spoken here.
Awesome! When's the next upload?
Dave King is a king
this is absolutely incredible.
funny story about McCoyTyner at 1:25:30 !
I wonder what the omissions were for
i keep seeing these comments about him saying the word iconoclastic. i hadn't personally noticed that. so, i clicked randomly on the timeline and the first word i heard was iconoclastic.
Finally listened to this whole lecture. Amazing to hear Dave's thoughts in this setting! Thanks for recording!
Motian is prounounced "Moat-yan" not "Motion".
Apparently Paul embraced the "motion" pronunciation later in his career!
How is the guitar player called he talks about in 53:40 ?
Ethos, right joe?
His playing reflects his insanity.
good lord.......pretentious..moi?
*sniff* *sniff*
all GEEKS in here ughhh
dave king speaks about dave king
It's called a Master Class, people go there to learn about him/his views/his experiences, that's the whole idea.
Nathaniel Smith you got me here with the hilarious "Rational Funk", but I've literally been listening to Dave talk and play for the last 5 hours- fascinating stuff! (and of course you beat me here)
torrential
iconoclastic
don't forget ETHOS.. we have a real similar ETHOS
Straight Dope on New york - 37:55
Enter Dane. 3:30
Omitted @ 1:36? WTF?
Dave seems kind of metro. I took him for more of a bad ass.
he is a badass
Check the ink. He's a guy with nothing to prove. Speak softly and carry a big stick. Or two.
a lot of artists consider fashion a chance to make an individual statement, right? i think it's cool he obviously makes his own rules
keith ruddell I take back what I said. He actually is a bad ass. I met him in Portland a few months ago at Jimmy Mak's, talked about our kids 'n shit. Super nice guy!
:) awesome yea he's extremely likable
Thanks for sharing this, super interesting to hear him ramble on.
HAHAHAHAH Joe. Should've known you'd be here
Will Hay Guitar I challenge you to find a Dave king video I haven’t watched.
@@joescartwright I'm not a cretin, I'd never take that bet.
Dave King loves the word iconoclastic.
Ethos and "rational" too.... cracks me up. It's part of being an iconoclast, though. Kind of a smug inside joke kind of feel. Reminds me of the cartoonist Berke Breathed.
did he ever put out the recordings from when he was young?
What book was he signing?
The Bible
What a pity all the white white noise! That and the squeaking of... snowboots?
