My friend aand I wanted to take AP world history in 11th grade, but needed a recommendation from our 10th grade honors world history teacher to do so. We were excellent students so we didn’t expect any problems. In fact, I had been recognized by my school as the top 10th grade history student at an awards ceremony a week earlier. Which is why our teacher’s reaction surprised us. She told us not to take the class. The work was college level and we wouldn’t want to work that hard in our junior year. We just needed to relax! But we insisted, and she reluctantly signed our recommendation forms shaking her head. The next day I was in another class talking to a white student and she complained about how that same teacher almost begged her to sign up for AP world history! She said she told our teacher that she didn’t want to work that hard and refused to sign up. This was 1993.

Thank you for this. We (whites) must unlearn all we were taught by our parents. Thank God I unlearned buy the age of 13 (1963). But you are right about prejudice still being too prevalent today. I taught my son, since they learn bad stuff from other kids, that you can be angry at one person BUT never be angry at a whole race. You cannot be a good nurse for 43 years and have any cultural or racial bias so I taught my son that also.

There's still slavery - by color - in America. Look at the privatized prison systems and the extremely low cost labor provided by the (predominantly black) prisoners for the profit of the private corporations running the prisons.

I was truly blessed my son was able to get in honors class at 3. Inly because his case worker said he was so smart but lacked social skills. He was shy as a kid. Well with his reading vocabulary at 3 he is hardly shy now and intelligent….lol. Thank you that took a great case worker to see that quality in him. I can’t remember Ms. Brenda’s last name but Thank you so much❤
