02. Scott Falci: Novel Approaches to Understanding and Treating Spinal Cord Injury Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain is among the most disabling sequelae of spinal cord injuries (SCIs), with prevalence estimated from 65-80%. Common pain descriptors include “sharp, burning, electrical, stabbing, pins-and-needles, squeezing, pressure” sensations. These pains are always perceived in body regions of partial or complete sensory loss from the SCI. Scientific understanding of these pain perceptions has been perplexing, particularly in individuals experiencing these pains in regions of the body of complete paralysis, who are otherwise unable to detect any painful stimulus-no matter how severe-to that paralyzed body region. Historically, failed attempts to treat this pain through spinal cord tra...

Why is it so hard for scientists in healthcare and biology to command programming power? Data has dominated the field for decades, and wave after wave of scientists have been exciting graduate students trained in informatics at some level. However, the field has (so far) successfully resisted network effects in data and systemic end-user programming as a day-to-day practice. If we are going to ...

    Good that this crimnal, responsible for tens of thousands of deaths in Ukraine through his propogandizing of the commercial empire of the NATO military business bloc, is waking up to the dire shortcomings of his evil postion. Of course, since he demands criminal marketing of the human body in Russia still he remains despicable as hell. But, at least this reveals the oppresive contradiction in this evil creature. Naturally, his evil is due mainly to stupidity. Mr Snyder is free to relinquish his stupid and extremely harmful notions. Intriguing that instead of people he thinks of Ukraine as a place.

      Hmm ! Yes if you mean Europeans from England or the developed states but not a country like Albania where technology and methodologies weren’t that advanced at the time she was growing up. I speak from my experience although I’m much older than she is. So I’ll give her credit for what she has achieved.

      @@rozuerd2614 regarding English usually people from small and developing countries tend to learn foreign languages more than developed countries, due to the need for surviving or advancing. About technical knowledge, I can say also that Albania hasn't been on that level before, but has very ambitious individuals who go above and beyond to be considered equal to their western counterparts. That's why you will see successful Albanians in many foreign companies, most of them not shouting about their achievements, but focused on their results.

    • @rozuerd2614
      @rozuerd2614 Год назад

      @@kekp3791 True that. Mira had been lucky to have lived in a generation that had the opportunity to study abroad, but my generation didn't have that chance. As an Albanian I've always struggled speaking English fluently and part of the reason has been that I didn't have the right tools when I started learning it. No TV , no audio books, no teachers. It was hard to unlearn and learn it the right way when I moved to US.

    • @kekp3791
      @kekp3791 Год назад

      @@rozuerd2614 I totally agree. The sources to learn a foreign language were very limited until beginning of '90 in Albania. Those books were considered luxury so not much dispersed around the country (my parents were in books publishing houses and still it was difficult for them too. Limited edition). We were learning English at school from Albanian teachers, who themselves were not so great too for the same reasons above. Imagine for us, pupils and students. My English before leaving Albania, so 10 years ago was horrible 😂. I improved it abroad and through internet which is much easier now for the younger generations. But I can say that the struggles made us stronger, in the meaning that we know how to deal with difficult situation in a easy way, cause experience made us experts. 😄

    Enough to tell some truths about Mira Murat, the phenomenon of the moment in the American Media and around the world. First, it is not of Indian origin as Google and many English sites say. Second, Ermira Murati is from Vlora (born in Vlora)! He lived in Vlora until he was 16 years old, then he won a scholarship, where he first went to Italy with his brother, and then to the USA. Thirdly, she is the daughter of a physical education teacher at the "Ali Demi" school in Vlora and a literature teacher, also from Vlora. Fourthly, the media around the world are talking about her and her genius, while the media in Albania deal with click shows and provincial bullshit

    As an uninformed American concerning Ukraine originally my first thought is that any nation has the right to determine its fate as a political entity on the world stage. The aggressive possessiveness of Putin’s moves against Ukraine seem retrograde and stunning at a time when Russia is no longer a major player on that same world stage and is boldly thumbing its nose at the rest of the world. Although delayed and imperfect at the beginning of the conflict I am proud of NATO’s and the general unified stance of Europe and America, etc., to support Ukraine in this war.

    The description of Ukraine as bloodlands and object of both Russian/Soviet and German desirous intents is indeed comparable except for one significant element that is largely ignored (because it requires a pov from the perspective of Ukrainian culture/identity): in wanting to conquer the Ukrainian chernozem and dispose of the Ukrainian untermenschen, the Germans were in no way interested in appropriating any part of Ukrainian culture-history. On the other hand, since its inception as an empire when it usurped Ukraine's ancient name Rus in 1721 (and arguably even before), Muscovy has systematically and hatefully looted Ukraine's history, material goods and artifacts, and very identity, passing them off as its own. One is hard-pressed to find any other such instance of colonizer parasitic annihilation (exploitation yes, destruction yes, аssimilation yes, but not cultural aggrandizement) anywhere-except, come to think of it, the Muscovites' rapacious genocide of the Novgorod principality in 1471...

      It does seem to me that Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus are all descendants of medieval Rus in much the same way France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, etc. are descended from the Frankish Empire. It doesn't mean that Russia is entitled to control UkraIne or Belarus any more than France is entitled to rule the Netherlands; or the USA is entitled to annex Canada (the last two being the successors of British North America).

    A simple cost-benefits analysis would reveal what a waste of time and resources it is try to diagnose and treat medical disorders which only 0.05% (1 in 2000) of the population would have. Research and funding should be prioritized to treat disorders that many, if not most of the population would have a reasonable chance of even experiencing. It looks to me like Medical Science & Technology are reaching such a level of sophistication that they are outpacing Common Sense and Practicality. I know that's not much comfort for a person with a so called "rare disease" but resources and funding should be allocated to where they get the most "bang for the buck", and wasting time on disorders that affect just 0.05% of the population just doesn't cut it for me. Medical Science should not focus on the individual patient, but the collective, the general population where Scientific Advances will get the most mileage. Finding a cure for Cancer is a worthier topic of Scientific Research than this trivial BS.
