Life is Strange: Double Exposure released to a mixed reaction - critics love it, while fans hate it. As a longtime fan of the series, I wanted to share my thoughts about what I liked about the game, and what I wish had been done differently.

I absolutely love this video, and I appreciate a positive critique amongst so many people hating it. I personally think that perhaps the plot threads that were unresolved were the result of wanting to explain things in a sequel/interquel/prequel, and if that's the case, it might change the public opinion later on. There ya go! Time travel in real life!

I think it’s possible, but it’s not confirmed. When we’re able to ask Safi about who she’s shapeshifted into, we can’t ask about Reggie. I interpreted that as meaning that she didn’t turn into him and that it was actually a phantom like what Alderman saw

Usually, yeah. But it tracks for an art department of a university. More gen Z people are identifying as LGBT, and LGBT people are overrepresented in the arts. So I honestly don’t think it’s unrealistic.

About what part?
@FinnLambouris I reckon that not everything is bad, and I agree with you that the personalities of characters like Moses, Gwenn and even Safi were well written. They seem interesting characters to know about. But then the execution of the narrative ruined it. You only know these characters by the surface. Who is Amanda? Who is Gwen? Who is Safi? What do you know about their past? Do you know much about their life, their hopes, their dreams? Take a look at Safi. Her relationship with Max was not deep enough for them to share their feelings, like Max sharing the Arcadia Bay events or Safi sharing about her grudge with her family. So there's no real connection there, they're just good work colleagues sharing some drinks at night and having some jokes, which obviously blunts the emotional connection from the gamer. This also causes a problem later when Safi has the meltdown. You suddenly are crushed with a lot of information to justify it, like her grudge with her mother and father. It was not enough developed, you are only receiving that information from Safi's perspective on the very dramatic scene, so it requires a lot of wishful thinking to accept it as genuine/truthful. Not to mention Safi suddenly turned into a completely different person. It's clear that the writers wanted Safi's character twist (from the cheerful attentive friend to a psychopath that shoots her mother and does not even care and keeps talking to Max) but for making it unpredictable they sacrificed character development. Or believability. If you write a story with this kind of twist for a literature course you would have a C or an F. Technically it's not good writing in any way I can think of. If you want to compare, take a look at every single ending episode plot twist from the original Life is strange. They were unpredictable but they did not sacrifice character development to hide it, they did the opposite. For example, Kate on the rooftop. You were not only told she was sad depressed. You've seen it from multiple angles: from how people treated her, her actions/dialogues, her room, etc etc. So when you see her on the rooftop it was not only surprising, it made sense, you were completely evolved on it! You could even feel guilty for not having helped her enough. You lived everything of it. Dontnod approach to storytelling is to "show" much more than "tell". Unfortunately D9 approach was the opposite for this story, to tell much more than show in everything, which is another basic storytelling mistake. Another character wishful thinking: why would ever Max kill Safi? Because it's completely out of character. I can't see Max killing anything alive, specially after Arcadia Bay event. And why is she there with Safi? Iwould expect them to explain this. Or explain why after we hearing the gunshot she was still there talking on the phone. It cause quite an impression to make us want to know more but apparently it was just a cheap trick. Then there's Amanda: 0 impact to the story - it's like they have a separate romance team creating a character for this purpose (and yeah, having to pick to flirt her or not without even us knowing who she is, tells much about how D9 considers organic character development). Alderman and his disappearance - probably the most original plot of the story and they explained it through a few text messages with Moses (once again tell instead of showing...). I could go on... There's too much inconsistencies and plot holes. And people know it. The sales are horribly low and twitch streams super weak. Nobody is interested in this story after the initial buzz of Max return. But the major flaw of the game, you could even forget about everything I've written, is that no action will have consequences. It's just a story they wanted to tell and you were passively running Max repeatedly through the same corners to have it thrown to your face.
Last thought: actually I think it could be easy to put Chloe in the story if they wanted it. It would be simply playing with the multiple realities. But, yeah, to make it come trough, it would require a great team of writers.
I had a decent time with this up until after chapter 3 I feel like the story fall for me and godddddd I I hate Vin dude was such a creep I honestly probably won't pre order the next game cuz I was still disappointed in the game I also didn't like feeling uncomfortable cuz for some reason every character just wants to fuck you and I just ended not romancing anyone cuz everyone just was not my vibe 😂 bit to each there own I just hope they cut Safi like they did Chloe or imma be pissed if they kept Safi but not Chloe 😂
and what bug me the most about all the negative reviews online especially about how the impact the ending is wasting all of desicions you make is, idk if they notice or not, in every LIS game there is always something like "Every choice has consequences, choose wisely.." and in this game? there is no message like that, so my point is, this game is more like a bridge to the next game not like final things like any other LIS installment, but the negative reviews see this game like this is full of shits (even though i understand the disappointment), i believe that DE knows what they were doing and i love max so much in this game even though sometimes it is kinda boring gameplay (or maybe because it's winter vibe that making me a bit bored) but i understand that this is only a bridge kinda game
Interesting, I can totally see what you’re saying. It’s a full game, but not a fully self-contained story. We’ll still have a part 2 to flesh out everything else. I hope it clears up a lot of the plot holes and problems that many of us have with this game.
yes, well sorry if it came out wrong, what i mean is this game is interesting and good game yet a bit boring if you try to play more than once (this is my 3rd play to see more about all the choices details) not like other games (LIS1, LIS2) that are still interesting even though you play multiple times and in my opinion, sometimes boredom happens not because things are bad, but simply because we just don't understand yet, and that's what i feel about this game so the conclusion for me is this game is still good and I disagree if people say this game is lazy writing, lame, full of crap etc etc again, this is my opinion, I hope in the next game , decknine can give us the answers 😌
This entire video, as well as your own perspective/opinion(s) is such a breath of fresh air after seeing such negative takes on this game and the devs. I just finished this game after starting it on Monday and am torn bc I’m so emotionally invested into this game/soundtrack/possibilities

Personally I also think that this one was a really good life a strange name,. I just think that it did have some issues
I loved it. Chapter 5 was jumping the shark but I kinda figured it would be like that so I chose to enjoy it and not devalue the first 3.5 chapters because of it. IDK haha.

Yes, its not the best Life is strange, but to me this feels way more life is strange than LIS2 an I am in love with the new max, she is Max to a tee considering she grew up and what she had to cope with. i played through it 3 times with different options and my biggest issue is, that the options dont really matter here, with the only one exception being chloe alive or dead and Max' mental health. at least it feels like alive chloe and the break up messed her up WAY more than a dead chloe. I need to finish watching, but wanted to say that. Thanks for sharing! I also love hearing others’ thoughts about the game. It’s interesting that everybody’s opinions are all over the board. It’s clear that whether someone loved or hated the game, it tends to have a pretty big impact on many people.

Also just a thought, if Max says she was just friends with Chloe, it's because Rachel is alive and she's dating her. 😩 Which would be the cold reality of Rachel being alive, you wouldn't stand a chance. 🥹

I love the game so much and hate seeing nothing but negatives about it. I didn’t have any big problems with the game until I played through the second and third time. Weird stuff like max’s mug choice absolutely will never have consequences later. And Moses being mad and saying we’re privileged for lying to the detective in order for him not to be mad at us?? That made literally no sense. Lying about complying in order to protect yourself is not privilege. I do like your rewrite better but my only problem with it is when I’m watching something with unlimited universes, my mind stops caring cause I feel nothing matters. There is no true timeline so whether I’m in the good one or not, the good one exists and maybe I could just get to that one despite any choices I’ve made. I like how the game made it feel like there was a parallel universe for a second but now it’s combined again and this is the only one there is, so make it count. I I’m glad you spoke up to give your opinion because I feel that the people who actually enjoyed the game are the quiet group. And i hope the loud angry people aren’t the majority. The game is not perfect but I very much enjoyed it for what it was.
Your rewriting is an interesting story. But I wouldn't rewrite it to replace episode 5. Your imagining would be better for the next game into the franchise. Max's power has gotten further along and as you have said, now instead of going into 1 parallel universe she can visit multiple universes. The difference I'd say though is. Max wants to keep Safi safe but also wants to try and save Chloe (going on if letting her die to save Arcadia Bay) so she can combine her universe switching with her reverse powers to rescue Chloe. Then Chloe begs Max after finding out about her new powers to also rescue Rachel, then her dad. There are many routes Max could go over more games. There could be a way of combining True Colors to the Max story as Steph came from Arcadia Bay.
The music is the best music in games. I'm in the process of buying all the games soundtracks on vinyl. Sone are very expensive but I'm still going to buy them. Not to listen too (i stream the soundtracks a lot) but for display purposes.

@FinnLambouris I have doubled exposure vinyl. Angus & Julia stone album from the game. Daughter version of soundtrack. I need the rest. But they're not cheap, especially on Ebay. I'm doing my best to get them all.
I'm 100% straight but I like the way the LIS games explore the LGBTQIA+ community. Instead of just creating a 'straight' string of characters. In the first game Max could have flirted with male characters but I played it so she flirted with Chloe. Even in Tell Me Why the character was trans and it didn't hurt the story, I found it an enjoyable game. Anyone put off by the LGBTQIA+ scene shouldn't complain. The stories in all the LIS games are heart warming and very well written.

Like all the LIS games. I loved this game. Looking forward to Max's next adventure. I buy everything to do with LIS.
I enjoyed the game. Probably my second favorite in the series.
There's a possibility the next game is a crossover event with Max, Daniel, and Alex. Culminating the LIS series in an Avengers-esque way but without having to be in the superhero genre if that's even possible. Bracing myself for that possibility.
Imagine if the game just ended when you decide to go into the storm and then the next game explores what is inside the storm hahaha. Life is strange: Inside the storm cuz i feel like they needed more time to flesh that out🤣🤣

Thank you! It just seems like such a big theme that the powers have consequences, so to have pretty much nothing happen except for some minor damage on campus feels pretty lame. I wish they went crazier with episode 5!
Can you define the difference between "the bad" and "the ugly"?
For sure! The “bad” is just referring to plot holes and storylines that I didn’t think worked (like episode 5). The “ugly” on the other hand is how they handled Chloe’s character in my opinion. That let down a lot of fans, and I think some things (like having a “Chloe outfit”) were pretty tasteless.
They should not go full avengers but they should bring in Alex and Steph.
As far as characters meeting each other goes, that one actually makes the most sense. If Alex left Haven Springs with Steph, they could most definitely cross paths with Max. I think it gets complicated in a timeline where Chloe lives, though. Max and Steph would have to bond over knowing Chloe, while the game seems to be trying hard to not actually include Chloe in the game. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what they do if that does end up happening in the sequel.

I think you are not getting the storm. The storm here represents the cycle of hurt between Safi and the rest of the cast and they portrayed this very well and Max's influence brings her issues into it to for her to resolve. I think Safi's fall is actually quite subtle and well done, and it may be due to how Max handled stopping the storm and what she said to her. Fans are also not getting that this story is an anti-mystery. It was never really a murder mystery at all, and the Maya Okada story was an anti-mystery as well.

@@amyleesuits Its where the mystery genre is subverted, in DE's case the mystery is solved early in the story and it becomes a different genre.

@amyleesuits The game shifts from a whodunnit to a Max character story after the second episode with the Maya story having more focus.
I actually loved that the friend group knows about Max' powers.

Without doing major rewrites or more voice acting or anything else they'd could've let you text Chloe back at the end. Part of Chloe's original deal is Max stopped contacting her after promising to do that when she left Arcadia Bay and that really messed her up, having her do this would just be like, a nice thing you could do. Just sayin'
They actualy did that in the game , after the storm safi caused , there is a text from Chloe
I honestly figured once Safi slipped through the timeline with Max that Max would be able to travel back into Sofi’s memories. She could’ve slipped back to save Safi’s friend from committing suicide (and spent a whole episode getting to know her and Safi’s bond & learnig. About ppl in the past) and maybe somehow been able to save Chloe (and maybe even Rachel and Alderman) at the same time. Imagine if Nathan had never met Mr Jefferson? Max’s powers expanding to being able to go back into the past of another seemed like a good narrative. Or even bring shape shifting Safi back to Arcadia Bay’s past and used her powers to save both the Bay and the Bae.
Omg this is such a cool idea! That would have been so insane if they saved Maya.

I feel like the main take away was that episodes 1-3 were good and 4 and 5 were over whelmingly terrible
Episode 4 is great, what are you talking about? 5 was serviceable and a decent ending.
@@txgoldrushI also really liked episode 4, but I get how it can be hit or miss. When I played it a second time with my girlfriend, she didn’t hate Lucas that much, so the whole Krampus roast didn’t hit the same for her. I don’t think the game actually made us hate Lucas enough for that to be a huge payoff.
@@FinnLambouris It depends on how much you engage with Lucas and what choices you make but Lucas is detestable. Only Jefferson and Madison are worse. Its not about plagiarism but about mentorship abuse. The fanbase isn't getting it.

I liked your episode 5 re-write. I think another ending choice couldve been if we stay with this new Safi and try to help her or let her go and return to the dead timeline alone. Either way Max could be re-united with Safi and the new timeline in the sequel and depending on if Max stayed with Safi or not it will affect their relationship aswell as the state of the world. So if you went back to dead timeline, nobody was the to keep Safi in check and so the world is alot more dark and fucked up than if you stayed with her and tried to help. I dunno if youve played Telltales Batman but it would be similar to season 2 of that, Safi could either be full on Villian in the next game if you abandoned her at the end or more of an anti-hero if you stayed to help her
I think there was a lot of trust lost for those who pre-ordered. There’s no reason to pre-order the next game.
I totally get where you’re coming from. I think the only reason I didn’t lose trust is because I chose not to engage with anything on social media aside from watching the initial trailer. I don’t blame anyone that doesn’t want to play the next game.
thank you for this video. i'm sad that no one seems to have anything positive to say about the game, esp long time lis fans. i enjoyed playing the game a lot. i esp loved the first three episodes. i do not really like where it went in the last two episodes, which also felt short and rushed, but i still think there's a lot of good things to say about the game. and you nailed all of it.
