Hi Danny, thank you for this beautiful arrangement and offering. I am wondering if you have a piano arrangement for purchase. Thank you and Shalom
Dear Danny, Thank you for your wonderful rendering of our old chassidic tune! As beautiful as your Sephardic version is, perhaps you could also sing it according to the original Yiddish pronunciation? As one who once formed part of the Amshinov chassidic group, I appreciate very much what you're doing in preserving our culture - but please don't adapt it to current Israeli modern-Hebrew agendas! If you don't know how Hebrew was pronounced in Poland I'll be happy to give you a tutorial. You do realise your song sounds rather funny and unfamiliar to one who sang it every Shabbes. The melody's spot on, but the words sound all wrong...
Dear one, Thank you so much for your kind words. I am passionate about the Hassidic legacy we have been given. I am both from a Hasidic family on my grandfather's side, Z"tl, well as a student of Hasidic Rebbes. The reason I sing it the way I do is because I was born and raised in Israel and the only reason I speak and sing Hebrew the way I do is because that was my upbringing. It does not follow the current Israeli modern Hebrew agendas - it is actually the toned-down Yemenite pronunciation adapted early on in the formation of the State of Israel because it was the closest to Biblical Hebrew. No agenda- just the desire to render the Hebrew as pristinely as possible. As a side note - the words were written by a Sephardic Jew who would have been pronouncing the words and scanning them quite close to the way I do. The melody is heavenly - it brings chills to me every time I sing it on Shabbat. I am very familiar with the Eastern European Ashkenazi pronunciation you are referring to and I choose not to use it because it would be artificial coming from me. I wish to present a living, current piece of our inheritance. I am not an ethno-musicologist and there are others far more qualified than me to render such songs in their original form. This was just my offering to a public who may not be at all familiar with the beauty of such sublime melodies. Thank you so much for your comments. Tevorach!
Tonight I am looking up this song for lyrics so I can provide closed captioning for Friday night services tomorrow for a large synagogue in NYC. Beautiful melody! Thank you!
