    One tip I've heard for setting the release time.... Assuming all you're trying to do is tame some of the loudest peaks and not totally squash the signal... On something like a snare or kick drum the needle or gain reduction meter should get back to zero before the next drum hit. In other words usually a VERY fast release time. And when your attack and release are set correctly it should look like the needle or meter is "dancing" in time with the music.

    • @drasticboxxmedia
      @drasticboxxmedia Месяц назад

      I'm not a fan of that because it's all about look and not sound. It could breed some bad habits, and force you to use your eyes more than your ears, so you'd have a hard time growing and getting better creatively

    • @Emondotcalm
      @Emondotcalm Месяц назад

      @@drasticboxxmedia I agree with what you're saying... But I still find it a useful tip for setting the release time on something like a snare or kick along with using my ears too. Helps get me in the ballpark. Point being if the release doesn't get back to zero (on say a snare) before the next hit it will start creating a "pumping" effect. But there again it all depends on what you're trying to do. In some cases you might want to apply a pumping effect as an artistic choice. At the end of the day what even the pros say... There's no hard and fast rules. And as you're saying just go with what SOUNDS good, or use your ears! Kudos to you for taking the time to make this tutorial! It's certainly a good enlightening starter tutorial for people just getting started. But speaking as someone who's been studying mixing for a couple decades I humbly admit I still struggle with how to HEAR what a compressor is doing! You do a decent job of explaining WHAT the different control knobs do but precious little about how to HEAR what they're doing! Over the years I've watched countless video tutorials on compression. Most of them get into the technical side. Some even going as far as telling you THE "RIGHT" attack and release, ratio and threshold setting for different instruments or vocals but that's kind a moot point because every recording is different and needs to be addressed individually. But I finally stumbled upon one guy that goes on a WAAAY deep dive into how to HEAR what all the functions on a compressor do by a guy that designs and builds software and hardware compressors and other effects. Excellent, excellent, excellent tutorial on a trick to help HEAR what a compressor is doing and maybe even more importantly, how to use a compressor artistically as a tone shaping tool! I'd highly recommend checking it out. I guarantee you'll find it very enlightening! Hands down the very best tutorial I've ever watched on compression! ruclips.net/video/K0XGXz6SHco/видео.html

      I actually agree with this comment 100%. And yes, the purpose of my video is for absolute beginners that are lost. So, I don’t like giving out advice that may point them in a complicated direction. In my opinion, it’s better to explain a general scope, and leave the person to the experimentation. The best part about all of this is that it’s all choice, like you said. I’ve had the pleasure of having great mentors over the years that have help me understand and hear tools like this. You're very correct to use the term flow. It can also be stated as more rounded, or less harsh, etc. During mastering of vocals I'll sometimes use a Vari-Mu or optical compressor. I do this because we usually hear people talking in environments where the sound of the voice interacts with objects and surfaces of the real world. A vari-mu or medium attack/release compressor can make up for a cold room and add the warmth and friendliness, allowing the instrument it's used on congeal with other elements better. A vari-mu compressor (my fav is magic death eye by DDMF) can add this organic vibe to the voice, like typical digital reverb does, but without the drawback of making the voice literally more muffled. Varimu leaves it clear and at the same time gives it the sense of being in a natural environment. Good on all kinds of "singing" kinds of instruments if they're flowy, (but not critical to the beat or rhythm backbone)

      @@drasticboxxmedia Another cool plugin is D16 Frontier's free limiter. Turn the volume WAY down. Then turn the threshold down to taste & try it on Piano. It creates a bounce, similar to some jazz recordings heard in the 1970's. It makes it a much more lively and rich sounding instrument. Very springy in a good way. Bad for snare drums, great for character instruments, including pitched percussion and wind instruments. At extremes it reacts a bit like walking in a wind storm but it ads a lot of flow character & lively sustain - keeps interest.
