Using DIY ABS glue to mend a Hobie Tandem Island cradle.
In a previous video, I fixed some cracks in an ABS Hobie Tandem Island cradle. The technique of plastic welding was used. Unfortunately some cracks reappeared. In this video we see how to make a much better join using ABS glue, made from an ABS rod and the appropriate solvent.

Is it worth buying a bee hotel?

There is much awareness about the reduction in the number of bees in the UK and around the world. Can the efforts of individuals actually make a difference? This short video looks at whether it is of any use to buy a bee hotel.
Do bananas speed up ripening in tomatoes?
Просмотров 16911 месяцев назад
Numerous sources on the internet tell us that ethene gas from bananas will ripen various fruits. Is this true? I had a few spare green tomatoes. I decided to find out so that I could show the results to my KS4 Biology class. The results were not what I expected.

Bayraider 20 - Using the mizzen 1
Просмотров 892Год назад
This short video shows how the mizzen sail on a Swallow Yachts Bayraider 20 can be used to keep the boat aiming in the direction of the prevailing wind. This enables the sailor to raise the mainsail safely, without the need to use an engine and another crew member.

DIY mooring buoy retriever.

It can be difficult to retrieve a mooring buoy or even attach a mooring rope to a cleat when docking. Here is a simple device that will help the sailor, especially when short handed. It is made from scrap plywood and the shaft of a broken broom.
How to insert a Hobie Trax Cart on the water.
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 года назад
A disadvantage of the Hobie Trax Cart is that its buoyant wheels make it difficult to insert into the scupper holes, when the kayak is in the water. Here is the method I use. It's simple and can be done by one person.
How to transport a boat/kayak over a high wall.
Просмотров 3612 года назад
Sometimes it is necessary to transport a boat or dinghy or canoe or kayak over a wall or up a slope. The Hobie Tandem Island has a hull weight of 59kg (130 pounds) and is not easy to move. Here's how I managed it.
How to load a Hobie Tandem Island onto a car roof rack.
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 года назад
Instead of using a trailer, I prefer to carry my Hobie Tandem Island on the top of my car. Loading the Hobie is fairly straightforward as shown in the video. Unloading is the reverse procedure. The main advantage for me is that car-topping avoids the need to find trailer storage while I'm out sailing.
Making a simplified jib system for a Hobie Tandem Island
Просмотров 5 тыс.3 года назад
One of the strengths of the Hobie Tandem/Adventure islands is their simplicity. I wanted to add a jib/genoa without getting too complicated. I also don't like drilling holes in my boat, so I made the system without having to drill anything. Even the way that the jib sheet is cleated uses a removable cleat. The whole system packs away in a small bag since I only intend to use it on days with lit...

Hi! Where did you order your new LED-lights? Cheers.
Would love this boat for the Florida Gulf Coast.
I understand that Swallow Yachts do export them to the U.S.
Interesting video Roger. Let us know how the glue holds up!
So far, so good. The glue finish is much smoother than the parts that were plastic welded. This would reduce the chance of scratching the Hobie TI.
(Depending on who you use for MOT's) Fitting LED bulbs to halogen head lamp units is a fail item. You can change the whole headlamp to a LED unit as long as they have european 'E' markings and have a dipped beam image. 😉👍
Nice video.
absolutely cool !!! but this f*cking loud music :(
You're right. It drives me mad too. Maybe I should turn it right down in my next video?
Great idea no daubt but I’ve tried everything and in the end I invested in a trailer best thing I’ve done
where's all the rest? the seats and x-bars, etc...
I have made a plywood box that slides into the back of the car with them in.
OMG DOCTOR LENNARD YOUR RUclips CHANNEL IS FIRE
Great video, horrible music at 4:30 kind of ruins the drama by over dramatizing?
genuinely a great video. Laughed a fair few times icl
I love you
Nice review Roger. Been looking at this and the Expedition specifically and they have a lot of advantages over the Lugger. Possible next boat for me. Need to start saving up!!!
Do you work at lady manners
So, the mizzen is kind of like a rudder, in the wind, then? (I'm not quite sailor, as yet...)
I LOVE experiments and this is a good one 👍 👌
Great look at a UK built (I assume?!) glass fibre BR20 with the marconi rig option. It is interesting to compare with mine which is an Australian built epoxy ply version with the gunter yawl rig. I have made some mods to my boat along similar lines to some shown here (e.g. electric bilge pump to offload waterballast and I am in the process of converting to electric power but am struggling with the fit of the outboard & prop through the flaps in the well slot. I am using a LIFEPO battery $$$! for the weight saving.) I also use a remote controlled electric winch for loading on the trailer singlehanded (an excellent addition). I can confirm these boats sail as well as they look and are one of the most seaworthy open boats of this size on the market AFAIK.
Excellent presentation of a remarkable sailboat. Many thanks for sharing.
Do u do any fishing whilst ur on the water?
Hi Roger, how has it performed? Be great to see some videos?
Could you do a sketch of this with dimensions? Thank you. I would like to try and make one from aluminum. Thank you Mike
The head is 25cm long by 11cm wide. It is made from 12mm thick plywood.
👍
I use about thigh deep water, get the wheels underneath the boat with pole ends facing stern, let the bow drift downwind, upwind hand with two fingers in scupper (beneath the waterline) to keep the boat from drifting, downwind hand pushes wheels into palm of upwind hand (which is holding the boat from drifting by said scupper) which guides the pole right into the hole. Takes 10-15 seconds, no special rigging needed. Just need deep enough water.
That's great if it works for you. I find that the waves, buoyancy of the extra large wheels and a fully loaded TI make it necessary for me to use this method.
If you put your furling jib on a telescoping fishing rod blank of the right dimensions, you dont need high forestay tension to make the jib work well. PS you can also use the masthead spinnaker cap to attach the top of the forestay
Convinced me a trailer is the way to go...thanks.
Is it pronounced "vittles"?
🤣
You two need to go on more trips, this was great! Very funny, really well filmed and edited and yeah, just great!
😂 Nice one!
really cool. You should have a video with how to make it.
I just started cutting a piece of scrap plywood until I had a shape that worked. That shape was then transferred to a better piece of wood.
Great vid sir
Hi Roger have a look on youtube how are American freinds do it much easier lifting back of hobie with two hands.
Do you have a link?
@@RogerLennard Just type in hobie outback scupper wheel trick.
I've gone thru quite a few head sail designs on my 2014 AI, and IMHO, you need a back stay and a (semi)rigid mast, or a jib is of little use. My latest version includes an aluminum mast and continuous fuller, attached to a short bowsprit. It works well, giving a nice boost in a wide variety of conditions, and it does not interfere with the main sail. I've got a short video of it in modest winds here: ruclips.net/video/B0pMUeO_DDM/видео.html
Let a rope and pulleys due the work Attach (2) vertical supports.20 feet apart.you can bury them in the ground or temp attach to wall. Add a horizontal cross arm to the columns that are at least 2 foot higher than required for kayak wall clearance..your only supporting about 200#……attach a kayak pulley system to horizontal. Use a cheep pulley system and if it works for you a more expensive one later. This setup can be easily set up and broke down. For storage………. The TI gets to be a Beast Another benefit …. You can load up your kayak prior to hoisting
How did you attach the cradles to the roof rack?
The cradles have holes in them that are designed to take bolts. You drill through the holes into the roof rack and hold the cradles on with nuts and bolts.
How did you mount those cradles to the roof rack bars? Did you need to drill holes in the them? Or use some standard fitting?
The cradles have holes in them that are designed to take bolts. You drill through the holes into the roof rack and hold the cradles on with nuts and bolts.
what kind of rack attachment is that?
The rear rack is held to the tow bar with a fitting made by bakrak. See www.bakrak.com
Just exactly the kind of video I was looking for. I am not a big fan of trailers and I am only ten minutes away from the place I can launch my TI so car topping has my preference. Can you tell me what is the distance between the two bars on your car roof please ?
The distance is as wide as I can make it. 110cm or 43 inches. There has never been any problem trailing the TI like this. No hull deformation and it is extremely stable on the car.
Thanks for this video. I have the same car and a Hobie AI. Never tried to load it from the rear because afraid of breaking that flap over the rear window. Is that flap sturdy enough to support the weight of the hull? In my case the hull is even lighter. What about to load the Island fully rigged (with no mast) in the same way? Is it feasible in your opinion? It would be a time-saving solution. Thanks.
The rear flap seems to cope without any problems. It only has the weight of the front of the TI on it for a few seconds, if at all. I am careful not to exceed the weight limits on my roof rack and so have never tried any setup different from the one in the video.
@@RogerLennard thank you.
nice :) I put my hobbie using typicall thule stuff and two kajak keepers. To make sure I use a lot of ropes and belts . Maybe to many.... So far I can drive 110 km/h never tried more but who knows?
I tend to stick at or below 105 km/h (65 mph) and the whole setup is rock solid.
Looking good. Like the Hobie cradles on the roof rack and the sand wheels!
Like the simple and practical design.
Hi Roger, Where did you connect your Halyard for your Jib on the TI? Do you have a furling system for the Jib you can share? TIA
Hello Scott, on my TI, I have converted the mainsail outhaul so it only works from the rear seat. This way it has more purchase. That means there is a spare pulley and cleat available. I threaded the jib uphaul through the pulley (it is located just in front of the front AKA) and then into the spare cleat on the front AKA. Hope that makes sense.
Where did your get your job sail?
Trying to get one for the Hobie oasis, the small sail for the small mirage Hobies seem under powered
