I would so love to be able to buy a dvd of this show. Any chance it might be made available at some time?
Still watching this in 2018.
I have just purchased this fascinating album from Bang on a Can. Does anybody know where I can find the lyrics?
This is so utterly BAD ASS! We need more stuff like this!
great!! some errors..
Actor #1 reads script: “What’s this shit?” Actor #2: “It’s a paycheck on Friday, shut up and sing”
give me moooore.please
I heard this performed yesterday, 10/3/14, at the Disney Concert Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustav Dudamel. The piece was 20 minutes long and the time just flew by. It was truly marvelous!
How are they reading the score? Its scrolling as they play?
Amazing!!! I just saw the entire piece at Austin Fast Forward this weekend. Thanks.
if I could play the guitar, I would play it. Great, Thanks!
ainda bem que só tem dois minutos e meio!
You don't have to understand, listening is enough! :)
I would kill to see this whole video
Michael Your research is extraordinary !! the sounds have a tremendous inner resonance i cant explain, do not need to categorize it or conceptualize it but if i had to i would call it spiritual <3 Chapeau !!
Just head it on BBC iPlayer, this is amazing! Thank you for this sound
will there be a record release ?
I should play electric too - then I won't have the burden of practicing 6 hours a day
I know this is a late response... But i couldn't not reply to this. You're exactly the reason why so many musicians assume all classical guitarists are huge snobs. You sit there with your little foot-stool and assume that no other guitarists could possibly practice as much as you do. Have you ever heard of Julian Lage? Blake Mills? Bill Frisell? Joe Pass? Tony Rice? John Renbourn? Jakob Bro? Maybe check out some actual non-classical players before you make such a ridiculous, dumb-founded comment. These guys spend hours dedicated to mastering improvisation on their instrument. If I were to be as ill-informed as you, I'd say that no classical guitarists can improvise well (which does often seem to be true). Nothing annoys me more than classical snobbery, and I go to the rcm
i really tried my best to undersrand
Just read about this competition-- fantastic idea! Question: how can I open a .pdc-file?
Mr. Lang, as music your piece is an extremely tenuous vehicle to be the object of such foofaraw. It lacks line, it lacks melody, it lacks harmony, it lacks rhythmic profile, it lacks mood, it lacks shape, it lacks form, it lacks style, it is bereft of expressive content. It is the apotheosis of New Age Noodling. An untutored and untalented child could do better. Boola-boola that Schirmer and so many suckers are going for it. I find it an utterly appalling commentary on our times and tastes.
Hi everyone: The rules for this piano competition have now been officially changed, and all the musicians of the world are now welcome, regardless of where they live. Good luck to you all!
I would like to thank David Lang and Red Poppy Music for modifying their rules to make this competition open to anyone regardless of nationality. Imagine what we in the US would have been robbed of if Ry Cooder had not brought the Buena Vista Social Club to Carnegie Hall. It is precisely when our government has gone out of its mind that we musicians and artists need to step up and remind everyone of the value of inclusivity and human solidarity. I wish all contestants the best of luck.
@rtwendt I am going to go back to the lawyer and see if we can figure out how to avoid hurting the musicians of the world as well. I will let you know what we come up with. humbly, david lang
@rtwendt that said, to some extent every nation makes its citizens complicit in a gigantic range of international humiliations done in their name, and it is necessary to point these out, when one can. thanks for reminding me. the rules of this competition were made with the help of a lawyer, so that I would be able to avoid illegality and the appearances of conflicts of interest. [continued on next post]
@rtwendt hi rob - david lang here. thank you very much for your post. you are, of course, right. the truth is I would love to be able to include in this competition every interested musician on the planet, regardless of where he or she might live. changing our nation's travel or visa laws, however, much as I would like to, and much as they need to change, may be something more than this little competition can accomplish. [continued on next post]
As musicians from countries like Cuba or Iran are prohibited from taking part in this competition, I invite all musicians of conscience to boycott this competition. Red Poppy Music claims that they are legally required to exclude countries sanctioned by the US, a country hardly in a position to lecture anyone on moral behavior. Artists and record labels have a long history of civil disobedience, and since Red Poppy Music and David Lang have opted to play it safe, I urge you not to participate.
@monda220 hi there! to view the score you need to go to digital.schirmer.com and follow their directions for registering with their system. it's quick and easy! good luck.
What a great idea - this is a great use of youtube to promote new music. LOVE IT!! I wish you and all your applicants the very best.
God, that's a lovely cover! Rock on, David Lang! What a great idea this is.
