The Getreidegasse is one of the oldest and most important trade streets in Salzburg’s old town. Easily recognizable because of the unique old wrought-iron guild signs that hang on the facades of the houses, it has been the most famous shopping street in the city since the beginning of the Salzburger Festspiele in the 1920s. It is also the street where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born and lived until he was 16 years old.

Mozart knew a lot of freemasons. Lorenzo Da Ponte, Emanuel Schikaneder, the Esterhazys and Joseph Haydn were all freemasons. It comes as no great surprise therefore, that Mozart also joined the ranks of the masons. But while the masons were an idealogical match for Mozart, they also helped him in another, possibly more important, way. On this episode of Mozart Snapshots, pianist Katie Mahan tak...

Hmm, why have I not heard of Katie until now?
Very beautiful flower dress 😊🎉❤
Nice dress... Nicer playing!!
Great video! Katie I'm wondering how you learned German so well. It seems like you really got the hang of it. I want to learn but it seems super hard as an American
Outstanding! From someone who regularly listens to Arrau and Barenboim’s recordings of this sonata, I love this interpretation. Extremely well-executed, yet still uniquely your own. Very underrated pianistic talent right here
We owe a lot to Constanze. Mozart's fragments in particular would probably be lost if it wasn't for her. She sometimes had somebody else finish them before having them published, but she preserved a lot of incomplete works. Another Mozartian treasure we have thanks to her: the letters Wolfgang wrote to his cousin, Maria Anna Thekla Mozart. Constanze considered the letters to be in poor taste, but kudos to her for preserving them anyway and sending them off to be published. Most of Mozart's letters were practical affairs; he had to convey information or ask favors. He had duties as a son, husband, and friend. But when writing to his cousin he had no responsibilities, and there were no preconceptions as to his behavior. So with all the mundanities and pragmatic considerations out of the way, these letters are perhaps the most candid, honest and revealing looks at what Mozart's personality was really like. *"But all joking aside - it’s precisely for this reason that I need you to come and stay - for you might have an important role to play; - so be sure to come, even for a bit, otherwise we’ll be in deep shit. I shall greet you high and nobly with pizazz and put my personal seal on your ass, I will kiss your hands and have such fun shooting off my rear-end gun, I shall Embrace you with a smack and wash you down front and back, I shall pay up all I owed you from the start and then let go a resounding fart..."* -- W.A. Mozart, from a letter to his cousin
All of Mozart's letters reveal his personality. No reason to favor a particular subset of them.
Das Beste sind ihre ausladenden Armbewegungen. Perfekt zum Kleid.
as a Mozart fan since childhood, i feel the excitement about it :) thank you
Beethoven would have fallen in love with Katie.
Been revisiting these lately and this whole series is just so excellent. Thank you so much, Katie!
I love this sonata and how you play with such passion and feeling really makes it come alive! Thank you!
Great videos! I just binge-watched 10 to 15 episodes tonight. I now have a greater insight into Mozart's mind and genius. Great adventures and well detailed! Thanks! Looking forward to more.
Magnifique !!! Plans sonores extraordinaires !!!
Question for you, Katie: you're right of course that Mozart got his sense of humor from his family, but would you agree with me that Mozart was *especially* fond of fart-jokes, even by the standards of the time? Nannerl only wrote a single letter with vulgar humor. Their parents used it more frequently, but still not as frequently as Wolfgang. Indeed, if you add it up, Mozart wrote -- by far -- more scatological letters than the other three combined! 😂 And that's just considering the letters; he also wrote scatological diary entries, scatological riddles, scatological music... So I think a sociological explanation for Mozart's bathroom humor doesn't go nearly the full way to explaining it. There's just sooo much talk about butts and farting in his letters. Would love to hear your thoughts!
It just occurred to me to wonder: are those Bölzlschiessen targets recreations, or were they the ones actually used by the Mozarts?
#KatieMahan . I enjoy listen to Mozart music a lot. I like to visit Austria someday, I want to see where Mozart is from, I want to see where he did lived, his graveyard too. I got to see where Mozart LIVE, it was in SoHo London, UK. My fashion is Victorian Goth. Thank you so much sharing all your guys Mozart Snapshot.
This is my favorite performance of this great work.
Go to space with this music ❤
Great❤
Bravissima 💚
I am really enjoying all of your videos! One interesting fact is that Constanze and Franz, Mozart's son, both told the Novello's, an English couple who visited her in the late 1820's, that Mozart believed that he had been poisoned and that Salieri had been involved. Franz didn't believe this, but he told them that his father had believed this. Regarding Salieri's confession, Franz only said that he thought the old man was probably referring to the opposition he had given Mozart in his career, and not to literally poisoning him. If Constanze is to be believed, Mozart said these things months before he died, while he was still active and in his right mind, not on his deathbed. Their friend Niemetschek, who wrote the first biography of Mozart, did say that Mozart had been sickly and taking a lot of medicine during his trip to Prague.
I've adored this sonata since the second time i heard it (the first time i didn't "get it"). I've heard many performances since but this is sheer magic! A wonderful performance that conveys the depth of this wonderful work in its full glory

I love Katie ... During the last years, I saw Katie threetimes, on an OpenAir with Gershwins Rhapsody, At the last concert Katie played a very expressiv version of Mozarts overture "Don Giovanni" ... great
Just discovered you from documentary about Beethoven, anyway your an amazing pianist!
"There's a lot of farting during the night, and the farts resound with thunderous might." -- W.A. Mozart
Amazing💞
Linda apresentação !!!! ❤❤❤ parabéns
Based on the descriptions Mozart gave for that target I think the little man is supposed to be Wolfgang himself, and the guy about to lick Mozart's butt is Colloredo. He probably didn't want to say so explicitly because the archbishop could have people read his mail (which is why the Mozart's sometimes wrote about him in code). Leopold presumably understood the intent.
O imortal Mozart. Parabéns daqui do Brasil. Que DEUS a abençoe sempre.
Thank you, thank you so much, Katia Mahan! It is one of the finest renditions, so pure and Beethoven-ish! I couldn't imagine that it is something more to play/say after Arrau, Gieseking eiusdem farinae, all of them demigod of the piano.
