You could argue that they know them from their previous life but it wouldn't matter anyways because they have reincarnated into another world with a different set of rules so they have to find a way to adapt, not only that Tanya's a child when she joins the army so therefore she is a child soldier and anyways a lot of the war was just them going against the Geneva convention. Why were people even arguing about this in the first place its a fictional world that has a magic system and these characters don't even exist irl?

Have now started with the LN and now she became even more interesting to me. On the one hand she sees other people indeed just as numbers and use the war time as career, on the other hand she absolutely despises war because she sees it as a waste of human ressources and reapects everyone who acts and think rational and made career. Really I have mix feelings about her. On the one hand like her I don't like war for the same reasons and like rationality and admire people who made career. On the other hand however, as an empathic person, I don't like the manipulating and partly mysanthropic behaviour of her plus to see people as ressources. Also this unnecessary violence against recruits (like the almost successfulkill punishment) just to protect her authority, is awful, unnecessary and a waste on soldiers. Better punishment would either be depromote them and inform all authorities about the incompetent behaviour, which would to the result that he would be forced to improve hisself to restore his reputation, otherwise he would be treated like an abandoned person which will definetly cost his career and life. That is why I rather prefer cooperation. As long as you cooperate in a respectful manner you can achieve far better results. Sadly I doub that Tanya would agree with me in that regard. What a shame. Anyway, it's a very good anime and story.
