The tiger drop is way shorter than your punch. Kiryu goes to the side and does more of a straight semi hook meaning he's not starting from the middle but slightly to the right from the shoulder. You can see that in the rebound since it uses all of your side to do a single punch as strong as possible. It makes sense to me it starts as a semi-hook since the direct punch while it has more reach is way less powerful.
