I never thought I’d see 12 meter yachts sailing again. I was a kid in Fremantle in 1987 and now here we see the legendary boats still sailing and still looking good (I’m aware none of these boats sailed in the 87 cup). Challenge 12’s resemblance to Australia II is uncanny, as you’d expect given they had the same designer (RIP Ben).

Would much rather still see these sailing for the America's Cup than what they have now.

DEFENDER! I used to sail on Defender (US-33) in the early 90s in Newport Beach, CA. My dad installed the engine, and the owner invited us to come along. I was invited to race a couple times on it, and to this day it has been my most memorable times on the water. I was only in high school, but I've been in love with her ever since. My favorite number is still 33. Ha! I've been wondering over the last 20ish years if I'd ever see her again. When I search the Internet for "America's Cup Defender" it always comes up with the boat that 'defended the cup' rather than the boat with the NAME Defender. If anyone knows of where I can see more footage of Defender, please let me know! Thank you so much for posting this. - Jason

Wowww, fantastic drone work. The crew on XII kicked butt. The man on the foredeck did a great job. Did you see him hanging over the bow!!!???. Great race.

The Americas cup is about tradition as it is about technology. It is as much about real sailors sailing something out of the ordinary. I would really love to see the NYYC win back the the Americas Cup and return the competition to Twelve Meter Yachts.

Anybody know where to find the boats names. I knew Challenge 12 and freedom. I thought it was defender in the back.. along with Couragous.. but what was the other boats at 2:12 you see defender, us- 16 ( NO idea) challenge 12 and freedom. i would love to know where the boats are

Need to bring back this class for the Americas Cup. Get Back to Sailboat Racing not who can go the fastest to a spend a lot of money.

Just good filming . Well done. Challenge 12 was always a fast boat in those light winds particularly downwind when it could run deep and still keep up the momentum with less wetted area than Aust 2 .

12's racing off Newport and the world is as it should be...

I spent much of my 20’s and 30’s doing bow on yachts like this. I always thought it must look as stunning and exciting as it does here. Superb drone filming. MORE PLEASE

This is really first class drone filming. I watch a lot of yacht racing and this is some of the best drone work ive seen yet. Please can you be on hand to film the J’s next time they meet. Im subbed and looking through archives. Keep the faith. One love❤️

It's quiet, but it beats having some crappy music on It!

I will be there in Newport summer of 2019 to photograph and write about the 12 Meter World Championship Regatta as a freelance photographer and writer.

2019 12m World Championships will be in Newport this summer - at least 24 of these great boats. Some with pro teams and pro money, some with amateur teams and shoestring budgets - all looking to represent the best of sailing. Will be a week of historic yacht racing unlike any other.
