I have recently discovered that a mature neighborhood opossum will feed from a grey squirrel carcass, so I have been saving every other grey squirrel carcass for our opossum. He actually takes the entire carcass back to his den to eat it there. I hate that Americans judge wild animals based primarily on how cute they look. At first glance, the opossum are ferocious looking but I am currently compiling a playlist that will demonstrate how harmless they are in suburban neighborhoods. Farmers with chickens could also be trapping grey squirrels and placing the carcass near their chicken coops to help protect their chickens from opossum. On the other hand, grey squirrels which look cute to many people, are extremely destructive and they are wreaking havoc in the US. I take great pride in trapping and disposing of greys. Feeding them to a harmless scavenger, makes it all the better. WRZ Delaware County, Pennsylvania USA

The squirrels I shoot, I leave out on a grass bank in our garden, adjacent to a large open field.I set up a trail cam, after reviewing footage, it’s usually taken by a fox, sometimes, a badger, and occasionally, a cat will take it.

@@johnseabrook1703 I should do something like this in our backyard but my wife doesn't know I frequently leave the carcass nearby because I wait until it is dark to put the carcass out. She would want to know what I am filming and I would need a reasonable answer. She knows squirrels are not active at night from watching me a long time. Does your camera have infrared lens for night viewing and is it motion activated ? I've heard that lead shells cause the meat to be harmful to scavengers pretty quickly but you probably know more about this than I do. I caught a grey squirrel with a blonde tail this AM and let him go about 10 miles away. I've trapped 430 grey squirrels and that was the first one I ever released. I've never seen a grey squirrel that looked like that before and I wanted to see if he finds his way back here as many people insist squirrels can do. WRZ 2021-06-03 Delaware County, PA

@@ccdogpark Hi Bill. Yes the camera is inferred and motion activated. I use an air rifle, and only use lead free pellets. My wife loves feeding the local birds, so squirrels and rats, do appear often. I have to be careful when dispatching the squirrels, as my neighbours, on both sides are quite fond of them. Over here, it is illegal to release grey squirrels back into the country side, so shooting is a good, humane option.

The BEST grey squirrel trap is a Havahart model #1083 "E-Z set" live trap. (I take no chances killing birds or other species I care about.) I disposed of 23 last month (June 2019) alone, with 2 traps at the base of my bird feeders. I don't even use my older model Havahart traps anymore. And the best part about them is that it takes a 1 pound animal to set them off so I never end up catching bird species that like peanut butter. 95% of the time, there is a grey squirrel inside my closed trap. The 1083 can be set in in less than 5 seconds with 1 hand. I then take them to the EXACT SAME spot in a nearby wooded area for the porcupine, opossum, hawks, and foxes to scavenge. If you take a carcass to the same spot, scavengers will very quickly notice that pattern and then nothing is wasted. Win-Win hackaday.com/2018/01/15/theyre-putting-soy-in-your-wires-man/ THEY’RE PUTTING SOY IN YOUR WIRES, MAN 109 Comments by: Tom Nardi January 15, 2018 The easiest way to protect bird feeders, homes, power lines and car wires is to trap grey squirrels with a Havahart model 1083 and then put them in a fish tank for about 10 minutes. I’ve sent more than 300 grey squirrels to squirrel heaven since June 2014. The 1083 is much more effective than the old fashioned Havahart traps. It can be set with one hand in less than 10 seconds. Then at night I reconfigure my squirrel traps by placing Thomcat saw, toothed plastic mouse traps inside them and placing them near the fence line. I’ve caught 42 mice since Nov 1 in a suburban neighborhood that I would never have guessed had a mouse infestation. (I only noticed this because something began stealing the peanut butter from my squirrel traps at night and deductive reasoning led me to mousetraps.) I place the mouse traps inside the squirrel traps to protect small birds and other wildlife from being killed in my traps. Mice are the only animals small enough to enter through the wires of a closed squirrel trap. When I wake up, I then set the traps for squirrels again. If you wait to see mice inside your home before you set traps, you are setting yourself up for a big problem. Local governments and/or power companies should be paying people a bounty to trap grey squirrels. Most people are too lazy and/or too stupid to do this without some financial incentive In the last century humans in North America hunted squirrel predators like hawks, foxes, coyotes etc nearly to extinction and since humans have created this current grey squirrel crisis it is now our job to fix it. Some states have extended their squirrel hunting seasons in recent years for this explicit reason but that is not going to have any impact on urban and suburban squirrel populations. When you use google to find news stories for “squirrels” it very seldom involves good news. Most frequently squirrels are mentioned in stories about house fires, eating car wire insulation or some other type of catastrophe, stories about some bizarre incident, or stories about some crazy person who thinks a grey squirrel is his or her friend. The news story below tells you all you need to know about the problems grey squirrels are causing all across this country. If Muslims were causing 3,456 power outages EVERY YEAR ! it would be considered a national emergency, and the news media would be dedicating entire shows to tell us about it. WRZ buffalonews.com/2018/11/18/more-than-12500-without-power-in-erie-county/ Squirrel knocks out power for more than 12,500 in Erie County By Keith McShea | Published November 18, 2018 “Squirrels are a leading cause of power outages. In 2016, a survey by the American Public Power Association said that wildlife, notably squirrels, were the leading cause of power outages, followed by failure of overhead equipment, weather and vegetation. The APPA reported that in 2016, utilities reported 3,456 outages “caused by the ubiquitous rodents” that cut off power to more than 193,873 customers.” unquote

We use a number of investigative methods such as smoke testing, dye testing and the use of drain cameras. Each method has its strengths and limitations. It always surprises us when we attend a job for a rat problem that has been going on for years and discover that nobody has ever looked in the drains.

  • @kestrelpestmanagement4583

Hi Nick, I see from your video that you use the ratflap on drainage faults to prevent rats gaining access to buildings. we've just started using these within the last year and find them to be a really good non-return valve. The older valves that used to be on the market quickly became bunged up and required regular maintenance. We are attending a lot more rat jobs where the drainage is the problem - are you seeing a similar trend?
