Active Prismatic Listening
Manipulate and visualise acoustics /
A collaborative installation with Bob Hoffnar and Max Lorenzen
A space is filled with a series of slowly evolving standing sound waves, creating a relaxing and minimal sound bath. With this minimal sound scape it becomes quickly apparent how the listener’s position and orientation in space determines the mix of the different perceived frequencies. Even a slight movement changes the perceived sound. Listeners become in this way active musicians creating a personal performance for themselves.

Inspired by the work of Manfred Mohr, I readapted a previous work of mine for oscilloscope and Max/MSP. This time I optimised the CPU to be able to draw 16 rotating cubes on an oscilloscope. All image image is generated from 3 sound signals (X, Y and Intensity) that you can hear in the video. This is typical in my work: I like to create an identical and simultaneous stimulation of eyes and ears...

#buchla #synthesizer #krenek #electronicmusic These days I have the honour to play one of the earliest Buchla 100 synthesizer. Dating from 1967 (number 12 in the books) and owned by Austrian composer Ernst Krenek, this beautiful instrument is located in Krems an Donau, Austria. This is an excerpt of an impro working on gamelan repetitions that is going to be released on a future album. Thanks t...

Really, it's kind of nice. 😊
Ahahahah yes! People get into zombie mode :)))

You Have 7 days.
:))))))
Wow what flash of the structural fuse laser drawing object. Have laminar floating strong trajectory of some matter problem in modern physics
Thanks Davor!!!
Mesmerizing!
Thank you!!!
great work. have you posted the patch anywhere?
hey thanks nope. I think if I remember correctly it's just couple fo multipliers using the intensity information for displacement. I used only Cadets.
This is genius!! Are you controlling the galvos with an analog signal or using ILDA?
thanks both! I send and analog signal through Ilda, it's just voltages, ilda is not digital. check my website www.jestern.com
@@thejestern thanks! Hmm, I might just connect the galvo's to an audio amplifier so I can use a cheaper laser. Lasers with ILDA are always more expensive. Would a normal glow in the dark surface work with a blue laser instead of a UV laser?
@@erikpoephoofd yes that should work as well.
oooooooooooohhhh yes hello
:))))))
Promo*SM 😃
???? :)
do you want to try with a music more...rythmed?
Thanks! It’s not really my objective to make music
Thanks! It’s not really my objective to make music!
Cool, but why not 12?
I think it looked better. However completely arbitrary :)
The audio and visuals of this video is just raw electricity. It’s oddly powerful seeing and hearing pure energy twist and bend into messy curves, the harsh tones of contained lighting scraping against the innards of my headphones. Alright, pretentious monologue over. Good sounds, good looks, my ears hurt, and I hope you keep up the good work.
thank you Bert for taking the time for writing this. Nothing pretentious :) Been doing this for more than 10 years, I won't stop soo soon ;) check the rest of my work if you like.
Normal
thanks!!!♥
Is this for human consumption?
it's a weapon for visual mass distraction
<3 very cool @@thejestern
thank you@@BT-qf3uc!
amazing !
Thanks so much !!! <3 <3 <3
Oscilloscope music, sick
<3 thanks!
Id love to hear benny bennasis satisfaction on this

this is what god's voice sounds like
👽👾💜 You have a pretty weird god, I like it!
Oh, yeah. Scratches that cyberpunk itch.
I thought so too ☠👾👽
This is extremely cool O_O
Hey thanks!!!!
sittin on tha toilet
:))))) best comment possible :))))
And just like that I've discovered the OST of my life! I must thank you and the algorithm for bringing me this gem!
Thanks! Very happy to know that <3
So satisfying
🥰
This is IMMENSELY satisfying. Thank you. Sick beats too :P
Thank you
Raw "oscilloscope art" vibes. Love it!
Thank you!!! I like it raw and dirty
Idk how I got here, but I’m glad I did!
Fantastic thanks!!!
Me either
can you explain the uv laser and the photosensitive canvas a bit more? How long does it take for an input from the laser to disappear on the canvas after a part has been hit? does that vary by canvas
Hi the canvas is custom-made using some pigment and transparent paint. It took me few trials to perfect it. It’s difficult to quantify the time but I would say 10-20 seconds to disappear. So it allows me to draw quickly. Some material stays lit too long. It’s the UV part of laser light that excites it, eg red or green would leave no trace.
@@thejesternhave you thought of diluting some of the UV paint for a second attempt to cut down the retention time? I'm not 100% versed in the science of phosphorescent materials, so I'm not sure if that would help it or just dim the output. Ah what am I saying you probably have
HI @@Enderdragon91it's still something I'm currently working on: understanding ow the material works. for now I have a satisfying mix. I noticed that with less material I get less brightness. The property of how long is the retention depends on the material itself, e.g. some compounds last longer and the effect is undesirable. So it's two variables: amount equates how bright, while chemical composition equates luminance time.
Beautifull
Thank you my man!!!
Alberto, it's so cool, I almost got hyptonised.
Thanks so much !!!!
🎶🥰🤩😍🎶 Love this! 💚

@ 4:11 - ish it gets so incredible! Great work!
hey thanks! it's basically just color modulation... :)
Fantastique!
Merci mon amis :)
Love this.
thanx!!!
this is something I've dreamed of doing, glad to see it's possible
Possible but still suboptimal really, for commercial applications at least!
I just discovered these things exist about 10 minutes ago. Too cool! Thanks for posting this.
You are welcome! These are great tools also for didactic purposes…
You had me at laser. LOL.
;)
First :this is absolutely excellent. Second. Do you know. What :Albert says when a journalist asks him: how to be the most clever person to the world. The direct answer from him is the be. Ask Nikola Tesla😊
Are Found my Gmail??!
nope and not the paypal money either
Man I mean to work.with the my friend. And benjoline it's using like matrix
benjolin is great
We making it out of the achterstandswijk with this one 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yeah!!
Any idea where I could find the patch for this?
It’s in the first examples that they suggest
@@thejestern Awesome! I own a THAT, too, and an old analog oscilloscope beside my digital one. Would love to reproduce what you showed. Which example do you mean, specifically? Is it in the booklet that came with the THAT ( the-analog-thing.org/THAT_First_Steps.pdf )? Or somewhere else? Do you have a link?
How is the audio done? Can the THAT directly drive a speaker or is it low enough for a line level input?
The audio comes from THAT, it has enough output for a speaker. I think I passed it through my soundcard though in this video.
I was completely immersed!⚡️⚡️⚡️
:)))))))
This is absolutely beauitiful!
Thanks
Great patterns!
Thanksss
