I’m going to make this next but the pattern scares me a bit. I’ll just take it one line at a time. Great video by the way. Thank you.
You can find the ranunculus short row tutorials actually every row is on Sun Dragon you tube channel you can knit along!
Hi the sweater looks very pretty I wish to learn to knit one where can I get the pattern?
I just bought it. You can find it on Ravelry. If you google “Ranunculus sweater” it should be your first hit or one of the first hits. The pattern has been updated to 11 sizes you can choose from. If you find yourself having difficulties with the instructions, look up Sundragon Tips and tricks here on RUclips: you’ll find an exhaustive playlist of videos explaining pretty much every issue knitters might encounter to make this sweater. I’ve been hesitant to try out this pattern for quite a while but finding that playlist got me to finally take the plunge. Various types of cast-ons, the different stitches, how to tackle the sleeves (long sleeves, short sleeves, or no sleeves at all), binding off, picking a size… chances are you’ll find an answer to your questions. And the creator respects Midori Hirose’s efforts in the sense that she did her videos in such a way that she shows the key parts but you do need the pattern to actually complete the sweater. I’ve already read through the pattern entirely. The diagrams are very clear and combined with Sundragon’s videos, I have no doubt I’ll be able to easily complete the entire thing. And don’t feel daunted by the one-size-for-any-yarn from lace weight to worsted weight, or by the many options you get to choose from. Think of it as a build-a-sweater pattern. I’m even considering a variation with a turtleneck (you’ll find a picture on Ravelry). In another video, I found an explanation on how to do that. Cast on 90 stitches instead of the initially recommended amount for the narrowest neck size, don’t increase to 90 after the ribbed border but just continue to the patterned yoke. I’m definitely going to try that out too. Happy knitting and enjoy your Ranunculus… of your many Ranunculi! I certainly plan to! Mine’ll be done in
Rounds 13 and 14 am i suppose to knit rows 11 and 12 for 13 and 14?
Totally unhelpful.
Thanks!! I don’t swatch either 😅❤
It was very interesting that you used even larger needles than recommended. I wondered how your neckline came out so wide. I want a wider neckline than the 26" suggested in the pattern but not quite as wide as yours. I'm going for a cast on 10 sts wider than suggested.
I just bought the pattern looks 🤩
The yarn is discontinued.
Very helpful! Thank you!
Happy New Year! Love seeing all your WIPs. You have such a calming energy and it was so enjoyable to knit and listen. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and for saying hello!
The warm red from your lumme pullover looks stunning on you! The end result will be beautiful. Thanks for the video.
Thanks so much!
Hi Mercedes! Enjoy seeing your sewing journey and found it very satisfying to "check off" the WIP list with you! A fellow flight attendant grew up in the area where Spinrite Yarn Factory is and it's still there. :) Your crochet vest is LOVELY! Great use of that dang overspun Custom Woolen Mills single ply.. OH MY GOODNESS that Lumme Pullover is gorgeous. You've found the right red I'd say!! Thanks for an inspiring episode.
Thanks so much for your supportive words, Leanne! Yes, I often don’t keep a list of my projects, but I found it very instructive and satisfying in this case. I think I’ll try to keep this practice up going forward, especially when I’m a bit overwhelmed with my projects. And thanks for the information about the Spinrite yarn factory. I should’ve done research before I talked about it. Lol.Wonderful to know that it is still there!
Your 17 wips makes me feel great. I've got 24. Got to get some finished 😊
It feels to good to give them attention… and then free up space for new cast-ons!
Great to see you. I was also trying not to buy yarn. I got to 19th jan and then couldnt resist. 😊 I dont have knitting friends near to me either and I love the idea of connecting across the world. I'm the the UK. Look forward to your next podcast.
Oh nice to know where you are watching from, Pam. Thanks for saying hi.
Love your stylish and somehow 'alternative' interpretations which all suit you very well - and think you are brave to have so many 'pots on the boil' and yet produce so many successful results !
Aw thanks so much!
That Blue “cookie monster” colored sweater, regardless what your partner thinks, you look fabulous in it with your skin tone. You look great in that color!
Aw thanks so much! That’s encouraging.
I am a fairly new knitter. I found you because I'm knitting the No Frills sweater. I was hoping to get some help in reading the instructions for the back neck. I understand the raglan shaping but don't understand where to add the German short row stitches. Can you help me? Suzanne
Hello Suzanne I don’t think I can be of much help in this fashion, but I’ll say what I can here. I do think it would be best if you checked if there was a forum in Ravelry for this sweater. Most designers have a questions and help forum. What I can tell you is that upon checking the pattern, the German short rows are written right into the pattern. You don’t have to do anything except follow the instructions! Where it tells you to begin the German short rows, while doing the Raglan increases at the same time, the instructions immediately following that are actually the steps to do just that. Where it says turn, that’s indicating that you have done a German short row. If you haven’t done German short rows before, I would recommend looking at a tutorial. Very Pink Knits has a good one. They are simple to do. Good luck! I’m Sure you’ll get it!
Love your podcast, thanks a lot for sharing ❤
Thanks so much for watching!
I seriously gotta knit me one of these. 😊
Hi Sade, how was I not subscribed! Imagine my delight when I saw you had posted recently. Snuggled up in bed, enjoying all the knits. Love the Sian, I did mine cropped and am contemplating a dress to sew so I can wear it more often. Thanks again for a lovely episode.
Hey Sarah! So nice to hear from you. You know, I remember seeing your Sian sweater, perhaps in one of The Gentle Knitter’s podcasts. I think it was one of the examples that inspired me to knit it!
Totally agree with what you are saying about black especially the UK often grey winter. I'm letting my black items go 😊love this video by the way.
That was cool, I was especially interested in the sweater that you have cut into to fix the neck…. something people rarely show. I have done something similar and was pleased I took the time to do it. I would put a life line in now, so that you can come back to this place if things go awry. Hopefully they won’t 😜. Short rows sound good if you need to raise the back neck. I went down a needle size or two for the ribbing. It was still a little wide after blocking, so did a crochet chain on the inside at the start of the ribbing and that worked well to stabalise things. Good luck and looking forward to seeing how it works out.
Thanks! I’ve taken note of the crochet tip - I can imagine I might need to do that on this sweater. Not sure I would have thought about it but for your suggestion 😊
Thank you for this wonderful and inspiring episode! I love your Sian sweater so so much. I admire your determination to conquer the A Line shaping with your long torso. I recently tried drop spindling but never filled up the spindle. I did find it relaxing, but I honestly am such a newbie spinner I have no idea what I’m doing… I just know that I (mostly) enjoy it. Thank you also for sharing your childhood memory behind the weaving you created. I really like that idea of transmuting and transformation those less than pleasant parts of our history!
Leanne, I’m with you on the spinning. I found it relaxing, but also I felt a bit the way I imagine my son feels when he mimics something for the first time - no idea of what I was doing, but nevertheless seemingly spinning yarn. I’d like to try again.
I have knit the Sian twice. Love that sweater ❤
Hi Sade! Kim of the Ewethful Fiber Farm & Mill channel showed on her latest episode (88) how you can take your yarn off your spindle as either a singles yarn, or ply it, in a super easy way, with just a knitting needle and a box. Hope that helps 😊 In addition to knitting, I’m also enjoying collage & sketching trees. 🍂
Thank you so much for the podcast recommendation! I’m looking forward to watching Kim and learning about my spindle. Collage! How lovely. Do you post any pictures of your work on Instagram?
@songbirdsadeknits Not right now- but maybe one day 😊
I have loved the Sian jumper since I first saw it . Yours looks lovely. I don’t have a large stash but like you have some I’m not sure what to use it for. The green and grey together looks beautiful. My Father used to make moccasin style shoes and I remember helping him with the stitching , not easy! But will be so comfortable . The only other craft I’ve done recently is to sew a project bag with scraps of material and I’m learning to spin . I transferred my fibre from the drop spindle onto the inner cardboard of toilet rolls and then plied the two together. It did work ! Good luck
Aha! Thanks for tip about the toilet paper rolls. I will try this
I recently knit the porty cardigan (one of my favourite ever makes!) and would recommend knitting it straight. That's what I did and I am really enjoying the fit on my long torso. As you say, the buttons-at-the top style makes it lie in an A-line shape without shaping needing to be created through the knitting. Your version looks beautiful so far!
Thanks for sharing your experience with the Porty Cardi. This gives me the extra boost I need to frog it back to underarms and just knit, knit, knit straight, no increases.
I enjoy your videos so very much. As for other crafts besides knitting and crochet, I just started my first attempt at building a miniature cat cafe kit today. It's quite fun. Takes time. But I love it.
What is a cat cafe kit? Like, a cat condo or patio? I’m Very intrigued… 😊
The kit shown in this video is what I am building, it's a dollhouse version of a cat cafe, really cute: ruclips.net/video/lxXED12Y-h0/видео.html @@songbirdsadeknits
I really love your Sian sweater which looks wonderful on you ! As far as 'A-line' shaping goes I think it suits women with hourglass type figures very well whereas a dead straight design is not always as flattering. For those who have bodies which may be less curvy it would not look as well. Knit for your own body shape and if a more oblong design suits better it is easy enough to ignore increases and decreases if you wish - they were not often seen at all in knits of the mid-late 20th Cent. I usually add a few increases over my hips as I veer in and out quite fast - we are all most certainly different and unique in our shapes and proportions. Thanks for a great podcast !
beautiful work as usual. Next time you wash your son sweater put a cup of vinegar in the water, it should help set the color, the smell dissipates very quickly.
Thank you - I will definitely try this!
Your sweaters are beautiful. Always enjoy hearing about your experience with different yarns and patterns❤
I was think about making this as my second knit garment. I just finished a tank top with a bamboo yarn(truboo)
It looks really great! You inspired me to knit the top from Holst garn Coast. But the original pattern is knitted bottom up and no top down. Will see, how it will work. Good job!
Thank you for this helpful video! I’m ready to knit my first ranunculus. I am usually a gauge swatcher but I don’t know how to know if I “like the fabric” when it’s such a loose stitch or if it will look sloppy and unprofessional. Your comments at the end were insightful but I don’t want to have to frog it, especially if my yarn includes mohair.
Good luck to you! The nice thing about this sweater is that even if you just use the recommended needle and follow the pattern for an oversized fit, it should turn out wearable even if your gauge is off a bit.
Awesome!! Like that you showed a “fix” tip as well!! Thanks! Very clever!
Very pretty sweater…love the color!! I’m currently working on my 2nd Ranunculus. Doing it in mustard
I have a mustard coloured one too - it’s my favourite!
Just found your channel, and enjoyed it so much. ❤ Love the way you expand on the yarns and patterns, and the Sian sweater is really stunning! Looking forward to listening again!
Love catching up with you again and see your recent projects! I enjoy your podcast and your inspiring makes. Looking forward to your next episode.
What a nice surprise to see you had uploaded a new video. I always enjoy your projects and thoughts on your yarn choices and makes. That Sian pullover is INCREDIBLE! Instant add to my Ravelry favourites. Your trip this past spring sounded magical! Thanks for the lovely episode - happy knitting.
Hello! Thanks so much for watching! I can’t wait to sit down with you when I next get the chance to turn on a podcast. Happy knitting to you, too.
Hi. Lovely to watch you again. Will Defoe try the slip stitch rib. 😊
Thank you for the tip about the slip-stitched rib. Much appreciated.
It’s always nice to join you and see your knits. The Sian is such a beautiful jumper, it’s been on my list for ages ! Your tee shirt has turned out so well. I love the the pattern and colours.
Lots of beautiful knits! You've reminded me that I have yarn for the Sian...I'll have to dig it out😊
Yes! Knit the Sian! It’s a beauty.
I very much enjoy your calm vibe along with the details you give. I look forward to watching all of your future videos!
Thank you! I’m so glad you are enjoying the videos.
Glad to hear from you again, nice podcast, like how your shirt and yarn, came out lovely colors, looking forward hearing your soothing voice and your awesome knits very soon...👍👍😀
Thank you so much! Looking forward to the next one, too!
Thank you for this video it’s great info for this pattern which I’m about to begin but don’t want too much positive ease. I love how yours fits you and wondered what size you knitted and how much ease that gave you?
Hello! I knit size 3, the original size before pattern included multiple sizes (used to be one size). I have a 36” bust. The fit is very roomy, but it works, partly because the fabric is so light.
@@songbirdsadeknits Thank you for your reply, although the positive ease for Size 3 still doesn’t look massive on you? Did you use the correct needle size 6mm? 👍
I use size 7mm because 6mm gives me too tight of a gauge. 7mm gives me closer to correct gauge. I assure you there is lots of positive ease it just sits well because of the drape of the fabric.
@@songbirdsadeknits Thank you for the reply it’s makes it so much easier for me to make my choice 😉
Hi! I just stumbled upon your channel, and coincidentally I am knitting my 2nd and 3rd Ranunculus! The first I knit with fingering weight cashmere and wool and it’s dreamy! I am now knitting one with Madeline Tosh light fingering, it’s coming out very Lacey and light, perfect for summer. My third I am knitting with a pink bamboo, hope that looks ok, we will see. Anyway, love your channel and love your sweater!
Hello! Thanks for stopping in to say hi. I hope your bamboo ranunculus turns out beautifully. I cast on one in lyocell but was wary of how ‘hole-y’ and drapery it was. I’ll have to try it again, because I really want a summer version.
Looks perfect!
My friend and I are struggling to get that wide neck. Did blocking help it get that wide? I've knit it per pattern instructions for the wide neck I just haven't blocked it. First time using a mohair. On my second one I've cast on 90 sts and ribbed on the bigger needle size. Lol hopefully that wasn't an overkill. I'm typing this as you finished talking about the needle size. Maybe there is hope but if you have any more wisdom to add to this that would be great!
Hello! I unfortunately cannot recall the process of knitting the wider neck - now that I’ve made this pattern several times I prefer the narrow neck version and always make that one. I know with the narrow neck version it looks too small until you’ve knit well into the body, or blocked it. So perhaps that is also the case with the wide neck. I think because there are so few stitches to cast on, it’s important to use the recommended cast on method in the pattern. A more traditional cast on won’t have the right amount of slack. Finally, I find because the gauge is so loose and because I am a tight knitter, I always have to go up a full millimetre in needle size for this and other similar patterns. Don’t know if any of this is helpful, but I wish you luck!
