I reckon on landing maybe 2 out of every 10 tarpon that I hook but it still makes for exiting fishing.

Fuerteventura ~ The Labyrinth ~ El Cotillo
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.5 лет назад
Above the village of El Cotillo, in the North of Fuerteventura, German artist and musician Wolf Patton created a labyrinth from the volcanic stones which lay upon the ground. The continuous circular path leads from the outer ring of stones, to the centre stone (which represents the sun) and is approx. 3kms in length. The path has the same number of turns to the left as to the right and this rhy...

Can you cast net fishing from the pier?
That's tarpon fishing Steve!! Most importantly though - you have lures and a technique that makes tarpon want to follow and take your hook!!! I'd say you hit the motherlode right there!! You have to learn to be ready to go from 0 to 100 in a split second!! Just learn to strike hard - several times if possible...... ASAP - keeping the rod pull backwards and winding to get LOW.... Anticipate the jump. In the early stages of the fight when the drag starts to pull - follow the fish with the rod and try to 'get in behind him'. Lifting the rod cranks their very flexible neck back and drops their tail in underneath for perfect 'launch' position. Some jumps are totally unavoidable but the bottom line is you need to have your rod tip pointing at the fish as it flies through the air and you need to trust that you hit the fish hard enough to be able to 'relax' some pressure - but that the hook will stay put. Once 'back in the water' you assume the 'down and dirty' on them once again. As soon as you can determine where they are headed pull directly back - LOW towards their tail. They are very quick to change direction and so you must be also!! Lots of small rod re-maneuvers. If you do turn them - to face you - and try to lead them - they will often just 'follow' like a compliant puppy - not expending much energy - but saving it up for 'nasty surprises' later..... when you think your fish is played out!!! Try exposing some more hook too. The tarpon's mouth is ALL bone and gristle. You need to a decent gap to ensure penetration. Plus the bottom is 'fairly clean' and there is not a huge amount on which to foul in most places you were casting. Hope to see you back in Antigua!! tight lines, good fishing
Hi Nick Many thanks for your comments and advice. We'll be back later this year - Staying on the East coast, by the Verandah, then back to Jolly for our final week. I brought a float tube out with me last time, but that can stay at home as I'll have the use of a kayak. Having fished that lagoon on three consecutive trips to the island I've noticed that the tarpon are either 'mad on' i.e. a fish a cast or they're switch off and you can't buy a bite. As you said - 'That's tarpon fishing' Concerned about the numbers of fish being killed when we were there in 2014 and 2015 - is this still an issue?
@@stevepitts7998 Your observations of the lagoon are extremely accurate. It is increasingly choked with bait making the tarpon very selective on occasion. We have had difficulties on occasions even when live baiting with circle hooks with fish rolling and practically scratching their backs on the float!! There are a couple of guys that catch and kill the tarpon which is most distressing to witness. They believe that God put the tarpon in there and God puts them on their hook - so that makes it all good apparently!! Such a shame, as the stock is not being refreshed due to increasing isolation from the sea over the years with development of the beach and coast road. Happening all over I am afraid to say. But they will not be told especially by a foreigner. The most important thing is to get up and get out there casting. You cannot catch if you don't go. And even if you go - and don't catch - you will still probably have more fun than you would have 'in bed' during the same period. Speaking personally of course!! Thats why I am a fishing guide I guess!!! Hope you get 'some' on this year's trip.....!
@@stevepitts7998 Also just thinking about your hook on that 'killer' swim bait...... Just put the hook point into something and try bending it open. Some or those 'worm' /swimbait hooks can be just too 'bendy' for a tarpons hard mouth. try upping the hook size or if maxed out then perhaps 2x or 3x strong hooks for less flex and better penetration - hopefully! check the point every time you hook a fish before throwing back. Point can easily get burred on bone. Anything less than laser sharp and you hand advantage to the fish. A lot of hard work and effort to be doing that so easily!!
@@captainantiguanick Hi Nick Thanks again for the advice. The 'killer' swim bait is a Savage Gear soft 4play which I think looks a little like the tilapia in the lake These come fitted with a belly treble, which I remove and use a large single swim bait hook and have also rigged some with a circle hook through the snout as well. I now have some Eagle Claw TROKAR swim bait hooks in size 7/0 for our next visit, which are without doubt the sharpest hooks I've found - expensive, but laser sharp! Another good swim bait is the Sebile magic swimmer. Regards Steve
@@stevepitts7998 I recognized the bait immediately. (And now the world knows too!! lol) I know i had issues initially for reasons described. Trokar hooks should sort out any issue if it is in any way down to the lure. Now just focus on doing all the right things technique wise..... They are the king of fighting without fighting as well - so watch out for that 'trick'..... be patient and positive but not forceful - and more silver kings should soon be yours!!
Come to my channel to watch ali s vidio
Nice idea
Haha the squirrels are awesome. The movie is too, well done! Btw, I subbed and liked, would love it if you could do the same to me :)
Thumbs up ere' Steve, watching Johns channel and you did a drone shot for him! You have a new subscriber to your channel - your most welcome to join Drone Seekers and also our FaceBook group. Many thanks for sharing :)
It was fun collaborating with JP. Maybe do some more when we are out again later this year. Thanks for the sub.
I've come over to say hello from JP's channel. Lovely drone footage.
Sorry about the delay in replying - I don't often view my own channel :-)
Came over from JPs channel, lets get you to 100 so you can customize your URL, buddy!!!
Thanks for sharing! I guess fishing there is different today.
I don't think that the fishing would be much different. The security aspect is the only reason that I haven't been back. Reality is that once you are on the lake you are pretty safe, it's the travel through Egypt that I have concerns about.
Beautiful movie, good work !!! :-)
Nice choice of music. Takes me back to my youth with Hammy the Hamster etc.
We also did this, was great fun just aching a lot now.
I was just the camera man. Mind you, I had to keep up with a rucksack full of camera gear on my back!
Nice
Beautiful video !!! I also have a new Mavic Air, a great dron. Hi Peter. :-)
Enjoyed that Steve. Thanks for posting!
Great quality Steve!
Nice to see my dream team!
Nice footage Steve
Glad I looked up what you had on you tube Mike, just aquired the bass book you did with AV which is superb, I haunt the same ground as AV did in North Wales. Surprised you havent got more people interested in you youtube stuff, you have an invaluable lfe time of knowledge - it would be great to see more of it here,
excellent and very nice video quality!
Stumbled across this video....start thinking to myself "that looks like Mike Ladle"....and it is!! Nice one Steve, love the way the Dire Straights track builds up then stops lol
Much respect, that's a nice fish & hard earned! Shrimp patterns catch many species. Enjoy it, thank you!
Do do you a query of the video in the zero minute two 1:02 of the video, that crustacean is that in your hand?
c and r !! nice job guys !
if you keep fishing places like that you will end up getting drowned, fishing is fun but not worth dieing over
Unlucky Mike losing that fish. The sound of a screaming ratchet has to be one of the most exciting noises there is.... love it !
isn't that an FG knot?
Yes. Some say this knot originated from Australia.
Cannot see clearly and too much comments.
yeh hes a big man but he told me his knees have had it lol!!hi mate craig from sunny spain...

The hooks we use are barbless as they are easier to remove when unhooking and this causes less hook damage to the fish than trebles with barbs. It is also easier for the fish to shed the lure if they bust you on coral etc. We have not found that we loose fish by using barbless or de-barbed hooks as long as you keep the fish under tension when playing it.
very nice onkel :)
hahahah i actually thought this was about a guy catching a "mullet" while fishing haha as in like a mullet wig or what not haha.
Around the Outer Islands of the Seycelles Wish I was there now :-)
lols....i knew you were going to trip with that much seaweed....hehehe.....anyways yeah nice catch and release.....i enjoy it......welp....keep up the good fishing....and yeah good luck.....
Thanks for the info Steve, i will give it a go next year, many years ago i used to catch schoolies on the fly in estuaries and creeks down in Cornwall but never thought of trying it for mullet,,,,,Cheers again Steve.
Hi Steve, are you using a figure of eight type of retreive or are these Mullet taking the fly on the drop or even static. Good video i enjoyed it.
Yeah, a really naughty boy if he was out without his wifes permission!!! Nice goggles though !!!
Wow! This band rock!! They are awsome!!! I swear I've seen the lead singer going up and down up and down Kingswood High Street on a blue and yellow trike? Anybody else seen him???
