The Suburban Meadow - Lawn to Meadow Garden Installation
Просмотров 200Год назад
Here is a meadow garden we installed in the spring of 2023. We removed 1,000 sqft of turf grass and replaced it with a dense planting of native wildflowers and grasses. After a rainy summer, the garden has filled in beautifully and is on its way to closing its canopy by its second season. #lawnalternative #meadows #garden #nativeplants #landscaping #suburban
The Suburban Reformation - The Suburban Meadow - Ecological Landscapes

The suburban reformation continues to grow. Here we are back at our flagship suburban meadow garden that we intend to be an example for how we can use native plants to beautify and deepen our suburban environment’s ecological functioning. The site is along a busy intersection in the heart of Framingham’s retail and commercial district. Previously it was a steep slope of mowed crab grass and wee...

    What Maintenance will be required? Will leaves and debris eventually cover the stones and allow seeds to sprout and grow? Curious. Love the concept. I have 7 rain gardens on our property, but haven’t used stone yet. Great video. Thx.

    Very nice. Also making the parking lot permeable would help. German cities have a "rain tax" which is levied per square meter impermeable surface, so most parking lots are paved with paving stones that allow water to infiltrate into the soil.

    Now, normally I would be more skeptical of the buried outfall here, but dumping into a basin before that final length of pipe may serve as enough of a gravity catch for the debris, providing it was cleaned out often enough to prevent any from getting in. Just wondering how the buried outfall has held up clogwise and cleaningwise

    Brilliant Thank you... watching this day after Libya got flooded ... (2023.sept 12th) Appears that old dams build over 100 years ago, and city houses build during the 60'ties and an enormous lack of political responsibility is the cause to these tragedies. And yet solutions could be easily done.... sharing the knowledge is the power for the future and we cannot wait for greedy politicians to act ... Blessings and love.

    As I'm planning my yard rain harvesting this is one of the most helpful passive plans I've seen. Did I see irrigation piping near the trench parallel to the street? Also, first I've heard of no-mow fescue. Desiring a nitrogen-fixing pollinating lawn.

    I like what you've done, however I must ask why not trench along the asphalt at 90 degrees to the sidewalk? Wouldn't that take more pressure off the overflow in a hard rain and minimize the chance of a blowout of the basin? Additionally you could channel it further along the top of the second bed below the basin. The reason I ask is that you've slowed it and spread it a bit, it is still pointed directly to the foundation. While you mitigated a lot of the problem, in hard rain you are still looking at a saturated foundation with possible seepage in the basement as it appears to slope directly to it. (Especially with the downspout where it is) Maybe its just the camera angle and you've corrected the grade at the foundation level. I just know from experience with our basement waterfall (Our water supply pipe had more water around it than in the pipe itself) until the grade was corrected to slope away from the house nothing we did could stop it. One last thing, the grass looked mighty sparse below the basin in patches is that from mowing or is it already experiencing erosion?

      Thanks for the comment. There are definitely aspects to it that I would have done differently had the budget been there to do it. Ideally I would have created a diverserion at the top of the hill along the parking lot to spread the water out across the entire garden space before migrating down hill further. Luckily the existing grade has a bit of a valley that runs parallel and away from the building. Where the water overflows from my basin after hitting the contoured garden bed, moves into this valley and is moved downslope and parallel to the buildings foundation. So the hard rain event you discuss does not allow for much water as close to the foundation prior to the work. The space also has seen a reduction in ice building up along the path as water not has a place to exit into the landscape. Definitely not perfect, and has room for improvement, but it fit the church's budget and what could be done with volunteers on a weekend day. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

    Why wouldn't you have made a larger rain garden near the front and edge of the property line to prevent more water from running into the storm drain?

    • @greenabundancebydesign
      @greenabundancebydesign 5 лет назад

      Hi Torrey, Thanks for the comment. The way in which the garden is laid out is to utilize the existing conditions. While another large depression would be possible to have added, the return on investment for excavating more of the yard would have been marginal at best. While I have a great client, money was not unlimited. So far through some heavy rain events, I have not witnessed any extra run off from the property. The mulch and eventual fine fescue no mow lawn also aid in slowing rain water falling outside of the catchment basin and infiltrating it into the soil. Thanks for watching!

    Yours are some of the best water-harvesting videos on RUclips! Amateur question about the perforated drain pipe connecting the two downspout outlets: Is the perf. pipe level? Or is it sloped slightly toward the downspout by the front door?

    • @greenabundancebydesign
      @greenabundancebydesign 5 лет назад

      Hi Kathy, It is graded level to facilitate as even a distribution of water across the front. If i wasn't able to have the overflow happen after about an 1/2"-1" of water standing in the pipe, I probably would have added a pitch of about 1/8" for every foot of run. Thanks for watching!
