Oval chainrings or not? | Why I'm back riding oval chainrings this season
Really enjoy the channel. More bhind the scenes stuff would be super interesting: races, work with athletes, tech developments, training rides. Thanks!
Will you do any fit work while you are in Boulder? I enjoy the fit and TT content the most. It would be fun to see an episode where you cover a TT from start (warm-up, setup, pacing strategy) to finish.
some tips on TT training like how long would you leave it before an event what type of training and what todo in the winter months. Also helmets and what you would recommend for broader people and then for narrow people… also maybe a nice bike build that will be custom for someone. Also what chains like normal chain, waxed chain would you run. Also tyres? And chain ring size would you pick or recommend Love all the videos you upload keep it up
Very keen to see the new Trinity which sounds like it’s already in the pipeline. You have a lot of very good information and content on the channel. The guys putting the content together sometimes let it down though. To be specific, the key messages of the subject are lost or diluted. Production is good but too much focus in the polishing tells me better suited to event recording. As others suggested, a race day story likely to work well. As for being energetic and expressive on camera, don’t change this. Nothing wrong with being natural 👍
Hi Matt, I am new to the sport & racing scene, always find the videos informative & very helpful thank you. It would be great to see more in depth trainings on equipment including footwear the team use & nutrition plans to support fitness. Many thanks 😊
Great suggestion! Mate will look at this really good idea
Hi mate, big fan of all you do. How about some 'week in the life' stuff for some of the top Team B athletes? Hope all is well 👌
Great idea like it Adrian
I'd like to do TT and Triathlon and looking to buy my first a new / secondhand bike - Questions for this would be how can i set up a bike to do both - Make it both UCI legal and adapt in a simple way for Triathlon - Is there ideal bikes for this? a video along these lines would be good. Great videos
I'd like to see a TT race day from leaving home to getting back. What to take, warm up, nutrition, getting to the start etc.
We can look at this mate
Thanks Matt
Did i see a forefoot wedge under the sidas insoles? is that to correct a varus?
Hey sir, I've just noticed on your few glimpse that you looked like pedalling more efficiently using that Giant Trinity with oval chainring than of that Cadex with round chainring on it
Nice bike. How tall are you and what is the frame size?
If just 6ft or 1.81 meters . I ride size large in tcr
Ow many watts lost from the mustache?
Top swimmers, like Sam Laidlow tend to have flexible (and often wide) shoulders, I'm guessing this means that the more stretched out position is viable (and perhaps necessary due to their wide shoulders? For us mortals, it's probably not a good Idea.
Very true .
Totally agree Matt: look what happened in kona a few weeks ago with Sam L. He had his stretched out position, blitzed the opposition ( sub 4hr for the 180km bike course), and then completely blew up in the run. Certainly, for distance triathlon, a comfortable but still areo position will ultimately realise a better all-around race performance?
interesting to see of Iden en Blummenfelt are going to continue racing with their superman positions.
👍
A good choice during storm Darragh 😊
Hi Matt, do you have any recommendations for compatibility of custom cockpits with mechanical shifting on a tri bike?
The Drag2zero highrise pose and profile arx 43 work well for this
I've got 60,000km on one of my 2016 road bikes and it looks brand new. But, it does require continuous re-investment. And I don't live in the worst weather nation of the world (Britain). 😊 Lot's of low hanging fruit on that fit. Hard to tell from watching just this video angle, but Jack looks a little too stretched out to me, I would try a 1cm shorter stem.
Thanks for the feedback . Hard to pick up from all the images . Jacks back riding well and out of pain which is great
Come to Norway. You dont need to leave the roads for practice cx skills ❄️☃️😊
I pretty much only ride off road these days when not racing. Its not because of bike handling, its because of car handling (e.g. not being hit by them anymore)
Sounds like you should give cyclocross racing a go 😉
honestly a super good way to think about it! nicely explained!
I have WattShop minimoi as well. I’m thinking of switching to a Drag2zero front end. What is the advantage from comfort, fit and adjustability between the two extensions?
Both offer great aero I just think there’s a lot more comfort in the 0.66 and much more adjustable
Do they use the standard 22.2 clamps?
What is your thoughts on the adjustability between the Cadex and QR VPR? Any difference?
Cadex is a lot more adjustable in my opinion and defiantly a lot more storage
After last season I want to sack my coach, he was absolutely useless. Unfortunately quite hard to sack yourself
lol I like that
1:40 1.5Nm/kg @ 45rpm for a 70kg athlete is 497W This is the second time I have watched a channel suggest sub 50rpm 4min efforts at 1.5Nm/kg. Are people actually following this suggestion?
Like like like 😅 must be a world record of the world like in like a sentance on the like a bike 🫣
I like it 😭 sorry buddy . Getting better with each video
I race TT. My fitter suggested using those extenders that jam the cleat back even further. Not factoring in the fit changes, is there a reason that having the cleat that far back could be a bad thing? I am performing fine but it still feels weird. So got to thinking if there's a negative to be considered.
Overlap on the front wheel . And also no good for sprinting
A helmet should be very close to the eyebrowns. Does the helmet give proper protection as well?
Love my TCR’s! Have you seen the Lighter carbon Giant cages? Airway light model.
Sometimes it's not worth rushing on public roads ;) It happened some time ago that about 100m in front of me, luckily, on the way up the hill, a car from the opposite lane collided with a car that was driving not far in front of me, it fell down the slope a few dozen meters below :/
is it comfy enough? or super stiff?
Yes just like the tcr . Very good .
Coach, for Drone, is it true to the size? Will the ear hurt?
Yes it is . No ear pain
I really didn't understand what you were saying
Ok mate . Will have to try better next time .
He said when you’re at like 12 o’clock, push to 5 o’clock, then pull to 8 o’clock for two minutes then like don’t do it for two minutes
I'd be interested where you find ans evidence about pedaling efficiency. Afaik it's an old school assumption that couldn't been backed with studies.
Yes agree . Only can see what we have done with our own athletes and myself . Seems to have worked well for quite a few athletes .
It has nothing to do with having elliptical ovals in your crank ;)
Please do something about the sound in your videos. Get a better mic because you sound really bad and it's hard for anyone to watch your content
thanks Matt :) this is great :)
Have you ever done experiments measuring oxygen uptake and power output to confirm that any of these techniques or drills improve efficiency?
I'm 30 years in and I'm still always thinking about pedalling. Not enough talk about pedaling form.
Agreed , same here. Nowadays newbies only focus on buying improvement.
I like the HJC too. I do sometimes sense it lifting off my head sometimes. Does that mean it doesn’t suit me aerodynamically?
Over unders have really helped my fitness. I generally do 2 sessions. Either 1 min just over and 1 min just under threshold or 1 min well over threshold and 4 mins under. I don’t think the specifics of individual sessions are that important, it’s being consistent and how you progress the key sessions over time!
Is that cadex bike your on sold to the public it looks incredible
Yes mate we sell these buddy
Thank you for sharing these insights and information once again. Well apreciated!
My pleasure!
What oval rings was that last rider running?
There Osymetric
My handmade helmet is more aero than these 🤦🤦🤦
I have a Drone. It's an incredible helmet, it actually feels like you have some level of safety with it on your head. The other thing I noticed, like you noted, is the ventilation. If you have your head in a good position, you'll feel the air coming out the tail and down your back. It's a nice reminder while riding. One thing to note, the helmet is NOT certified safe in the USA, so if you do a race where they are checking for the stickers/model, you'll get scolded and have to swap.
Yes I’d agree with that mate
This protruding bottle holder on the handlebars, pointing towards the stomach, could kill a cyclist in the event of a crash 👽 It's nonsense where cycling is heading now, I prefer Xlabs Gorilla cage to have a drink behind the saddle, all I need is a tube on my back without losing aero to allow me to use it without having to reach for it with my hand.
I've done a video on tyres, I'm back on 25c tyres 100psi Rim Brakes. Fastest set up hands down. Discs, and lower tyre pressure and tubeless is hands down the slowest set up I've used and by far the most dangerous.
Man I wish I could find a version of you in the mid Atlantic of the usa.... I think a lot of fitters are a "fit by numbers" approach and its tough.
We just had a customer fly in from New York for similar reasons!
Love it Matt. A 15min video on a TT setup, what was the elapsed time for the full set up? Thanks!!
