Mosaic Golden Compass - Gallifreyan Timelapse with Commentary
Просмотров 4621 день назад
This is a small, proof-of-concept project that deals with organic, high-resolution mosaic patterned images, with a dash of Gallifreyan :) I'm probably going to release a stand-alone tutorial, where I go over a smarter way of accomplishing the same thing, so if you're interested in that, keep an eye out at some point in the distant future... I shall Rise - Gallifreyan Lyrics SUPER Timelapse with Commentary
Просмотров 45Месяц назад
This project was not supposed to be this complicated. Just take the song, write it out in unfurled Sherman Gallifreyan, add in some helix Spinner Gallifreyan for repeated lines, and finish off by looping some Rasilonian Gallfreyan in the middle. Easy peasy. But here we are, over 15 hours later, having accomplished several things, and experimented with new and unusual ways of writing repetition,...

Our very own Alita from Alita Battle Angel is back again in another Sherman Gallifreyan shadow project (Oh, hello there #alitaarmy, didn't see you there :) ) I really tried emphasizing the frenetic energy of this scene, and the raw brutality going on. It's not a "pretty" piece, and it's not meant to be. And the message written is crystal clear. This project features a new workflow/technique for...

wait is this for Sirkles video?
I tried getting two birds with one stone, so yea. I figured, why not.
turns out there's another reason to be using inkscape...
Oh, do tell - what would that be? - legofanatikeren
Yayyyy tutorial
yup - I wanted to slow down from the usual timelapse and actually talk a bit about the way I do things - and someone on our Discord server wanted to see the workflow soo... Helps make sense of some of the other tools I talk about in my longer videos PART 1 & 2 Hope you liked it :) - legofanatikeren
god dam, this look so good
Thank you, I quite agree :) - legofanatikeren
Do you use a drawing tablet or m&kb?
Hello there :) I am armed only with my laptop, a cheap gaming mouse (gotta get that RGB energy lol) and my ideas! I'm actually really surprised this particular video has gotten so many views, and I'm really considering remaking this, but with actual commentary (this was before I started doing the audio BTS commentary that I do now-a-days)
Updated the description to add the promised references to previous projects and tutorials that was used here :)
So, I forgot during my commentary that the spelling error on the H was found and rectified AFTER I finished recording, lol. You can see my solution in the finished product, showcased in the thumbnail. I apologize for teasing my amazing solution and then not show it. Oops.
wow! your creative process is interesting to watch
Thanks for the kind words - it's no less surprising on my end to see how my workflow evolves for these shadow projects, growing more complex and interesting over time :) Guess with practice you get experience! - legofanatikeren
PART 2 is out - for more niche techniques and more complex tools that are used less often, but no less interesting: ruclips.net/video/OQKPo5_zVgE/видео.html
Thank you! Valuable information. I especially liked that you left your experimentations in the video to save me the extra time of trying too many different settings to see different effects that would ultimately be discarded.
Thanks for the kind words :) Yea, my style of tutorial is not some polished, scripted series of events, but more of a lets-actually-find-out-together kind of style. Which leads to longer videos with more chaos, but at the same time it's more REAL and I'm glad to hear that my messing about taught you something worthwhile :) - legofanatikeren
Great video!
Thank you, it was an absolute mess to make, hope it made at least some sense. - legofanatikeren
@@swcjedi-familycantina absolutely made sense... and no signs of a mess in the making :-)
As always, a fun tutorial with easy to follow commentary. This do be very helpful
Thank you - a tutorial just as chaotic as the last one, but it got the job done :)
Great work! I love the free flowing nature of the words and it perfectly suits the waves
Thank you so much :) Unfortunately, sharp-eyed readers caught a mistake, and upon fixing it, I realized several more... So much for claiming it needed no proof-reading lol... - legofanatikeren
@@swcjedi-familycantina all the more reason to keep using the system lmao
Couldn't agree more - I'll definitely find another project that suits its unique style in the future :) and Hope others might give it a try as well!
This is so cool!!
Thank you - I happen to agree :)
Feel like Skeleton Sherman is growing onto me. Dope as always
To me it is characterized by being minimalistic and incomplete, interconnected in ways that Sherman normally isn't, while still being readable despite all that. It gives me a sci-fi vibe, that a lot if other systems embody as well, yet I keep coming back to the fact that it's minimalistic and incomplete. Something that few other systems boast. - legofanatikeren
Very cool such a badass pose.
Thank you, I concur :) This project was actually aired specifically to mess with Creeky and his RUclips segment, but shh, don't tell him ;) - legofanatikeren
Dope af as always
Thank you :) The most inspiring projects aren't always the biggest, or the most complex.
Man, this was so complex and I am in awe. I maybe could write more but none of my words would do justice to what i feel right now. Simply, amazing.
just one word at a time, baby :) Glad you liked it
This is a life saver. I'm extremely new to Inkscape and tried CG on it for the first time and it was TOUGH. You basically answered every problem that i encountered. Thank you!
I am SO happy to hear that! :) What system did you try your hand at? Sherman, or one of the other, lesser known systems, that I try to showcase? (CG, or Circular Gallifreyan, can refer to many different systems) I'm just curious :) Also - I'm working on a PART TWO of this video, where I go over some of the more advanced techniques, and also revisit some of the tools mentioned here, that I didn't do justice. If there's anything I missed, or further questions, DO let me know! - legofanatikeren
@@swcjedi-familycantina Oh, yes I tried Sherman's. I really want to dabble into other systems but found Sherman's easier to understand and faster to pick up. I got back into it post COVID and am a bit rusty. The video was very, very helpful and I'm eagerly looking forward to new ones. Also love your commentary videos while you go through making your artwork.
Well, that answer basically validated the whole reason I do this :) Showcasing other amazing systems beyond just Sherman, while also proving some inspiration and tools for other Gallifreyan writers, new or old. Thank you. If you're not already, I highly recommend you join our Discord server, where all the development of new scripts happen, we share our work and help each other improve in new ways, styles, and feedback. No matter your skill level. Also just a cool place to see some amazing artwork from very talented people :) In case I've piqued your interest (or anyone else reading this) discord.gg/YRbEdrz - legofanatikeren
@@swcjedi-familycantina Ayyooo, already joined that server when I found it on reddit a couple days back! Keep doing that amazing work. It's great to see people in the process of making their pieces because it's so easy to look at a completed artwork, admire it, and move on. This gives a perspective of how much work actually goes into making these beauties.
indeed, thanks again :)
Thanks for the video. I still don't understand anything when it comes to Gallifreyan, but from an aesthetic point of view I love those compositions you make.
Happy to hear that you get a little something out of it. These videos are just a by-product of the creation itself - and so there's not a ton of production value attached, by design. Any interest in Gallifreyan writing systems that may arise from randomly seeing these, is the most I could hope for, really :)
Loved it. Great work. It's rare to find tutorials like this for inkscape. Thanks a lot.
Glad you liked it, even though it's not quite styled like a proper tutorial, in hindsight. Very few of my timelapses are actually meant for instructional use, so if there is anything you see in my videos that make you go "hey I'd like to LEARN that!" do let me know, and I might make a proper video on the topic/style/technique :) - legofanatikeren
Thanks.....please see: subjectandverbagree.blogspot.com/
Thank you for actually explaining the how/why of the tools. I've watched 10 or 11 'master inkscape' tutorials and none could be arsed to decently explain how the tools work.
Well, I imagine most "master Inkscape videos" try to cover everything the program can do - which means that none of them goes in-depth on anything. Rather they cover the most common usages and moves on. It's a balance between actually telling you every single little detail, and making a video that's not 60 hours long... For reference, me sitting down and "quickly" going through the stroke behaviour, circles, nodes and path operations, took nearly an hour - and I've just scratched the surface. Nonetheless, I'm happy you learned something, and based on reception, I'm going to have to follow this up with a video on more advanced Gallifreyan techniques, both from myself, and from my wonderful fellow artists. - legofanatikeren
You might also consider setting the bounding box of objects to geometric, instead of visual (Edit->Preferences->Tools). It will make aligning objects more precise and easier, because the width of the stroke will not be taken into consideration when calculating the dimensions of the object.
That is a very valid point - and a good tip to get out there - I know that's one of the main struggles when it comes to predicting and converting designs to a CNC platform. But I'm not terribly concerned with that level of precision, since most Gallifreyan design work is more fluid and organic rather than perfectly ordered. Thank you for the tip, hope it helps someone :) - legofanatikeren
Thank you very much for this! I recently wrote my first Gallifreyan sentence using Inkscape, but it was a struggle, and now I see how I could have done it more efficiently.
Well, in that case I consider it a mission succes :) So glad that it's been helpful for someone. And remember, the best way to improve is to try different things out :) - legofanatikeren
How do you do a difference effect?
When you have two objects selected, go to the top of your window to find the different menus. One of them is labeled "path". In that menu you'll find, among other things, your path operations. That's where the difference operation is. Or you can use th shortcut assigned to it. Hope this helps. - legofanatikeren
@@swcjedi-familycantina thanks mate
Excellent! Not only is it a video about that kind of Writing, but it's one of the best I've seen so far about the behavior of strokes in Inkscape. Thank you so much for the video 💯
Your hint about the new flatten tool had me immediately download 1.3 :). At the same time, a couple of new people interested in our little Gallifreyan creator-community on Discord was having trouble specifically with the double letter appearances, and so I decided to actually sit down and showcase what I do and why. So in a way, this video was inspired by you :) And yes, stroke behaviour is paramount to what I do, so I have to know 110% about how it works and why, because it creates a lot of confusion otherwise. And happy to pass that on. Sadly, I discovered the flatten/fracture operations don't work on open contours, which is why I didn't feature them here. Have a great day! -legofanatikeren
@@swcjedi-familycantina Yes, you're right, I realized while watching the video that flatten wasn't going to work for what you do.
Fantastic! Although I'm not into that world, I love those intricate designs of yours. For some reason, I have a feeling that the new Flatten option in Path in Inkscape 1.3 will be very useful for this kind of work. Thanks for the video 🙂
I saw just yesterday they released 1.3 with the shape builder tool, but haven't had time to play around with it yet - haven't heard of a flatten tool, but now I must check it out! Thank you for the kind words :)
Thanks for the video. Very good tips.
