The faces look black to wrong exposure setting for the faces. The background light is causing it.

That's incorrect. Film doesn't have specific settings for faces. This isn'tan auto digital image. In a studio you'd use a key light to brighten a face but this is OUTSIDE so there is no backlight per se. The dark faces are dark because the skin tone is dark.

The gate shown is not the Chongwen Men, but the arrow tower and then main tower of the Zhengyang Men, also known as the Qian Men. Note the decorative white arches over the windows of the arrow tower. This had recently been rebuilt having lost its roof and upper parts in a fire set by the Boxers in 1900. The architect for the restoration was a German, Curt von Rothkegel, who added these decorations, completely unknown anywhere else in China. As the camera pans between the two towers the building in the background is a rarely seen Belgian-built railway station, terminus of the line from Hankow, completed in 1906.

Actually, this is Kashi Vishwanath temple of Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh). Locals also use to call it Golden temple (as it is easy for non-locals to find it like Amritsar's one). Moreover, real name of Amritsar's golden temple is "Darbar Sahib". So you don't need to get offended.

This is a confusing film because the Hopi dancers are shown with other native peoples who are wearing plains indian feather bonnets. As far as I know, the Hopi did not wear these. I liked the part where the older child seems to be throwing handfuls of dirt at the camera and trying to hide the younger kids from being filmed. This was a time period where some whites "got it" and were trying to prevent the further loss of native culture against whites who were trying to destroy it, yet they had to make exploitative films like this to "sell" native people and culture to those who could help stop the onslaught.

I doubt it if this were taken from the Ming Dynasty City wall. I am an expert in this and i can tell from experience that the view is much too close to the Forrbidden City. Judging from the angles, this film was taken from a high position somewhere in the legations quarter. It cant have been from the Qianmen or the south parts of the wall. Looks like more to the east. Most likely it was at the Peking Hotel or ? a little bit more to the south like the German Embassy now Capital Hotel. Feel free to check these and other facts on our maps of Beijing drive.google.com/open?id=13UN5KB0DzpCUMy-etiv6W2kP3TI&usp=sharing

this film information is completely untrue; this is not the Miaoying White Dagoba temple at all but the White Dagoba Bai Ta on the Jade Island of Beihai (North lake) Park, which is and more famous and also from another era entirely. This is the new hite Dagoba from the Qing Dynasty. The Miaoying one dates from the Yuan Dynasty, the Mongolians which is at least 2 centuries earlier.
