The PIL in this video is more like HIL, and HIL in the video is more like running test in dyno or driving a real vehicle.

There is a mistake in the explanation of ECU Abstraction Layer, it'll provide a standard APIs for the peripheral access irrespective of internal or external HW. As per Vector : The ECU Abstraction Layer (ECUAL) offers uniform access to all functionalities of an ECU such as communication, memory or IO - regardless of whether these functionalities are part of the microcontroller or are implemented by peripheral components.
