Walker Percy at Notre Dame
Walker Percy receives the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame at their 1989 Commencement. His address to the graduates is quintessential Percy--and a "primer" not only for his work but for understanding the work of the Catholic novelist.

My oldest son name a Walker on behalf of W Percy. WP is the man! Notice how he stretches out the word "school" pronounced schoooooooooo by Percy. Great man and writer.
he goes off on the real reason for the speech: to drop some tuth on the audience. @ 7:33
This is a great man and writer. Love the way he says, "medical schoooooooo......" My oldest son is named Walker, for Percy.
Can you imagine ND giving a Laetare medal to an author like Walker Percy today?
Video shows just Far Left and completely unmoored from their origins todays academia has become. Sad. Will they ever return to their proper role and function in society?
A great insight on "Notre Dame". May she intercede so that ND returns to it's Catholic roots!
Racist racist. Jk dullards think like this and read no further. Someone told me so. READ! READ learn LEARN ! THINK FOR YOURSELF.
He speaks at about 3:50
More people should know about Walker Percy than Christopher Hitchens. Shameful that Norte Dame was stolen from Catholicism by Hesburg and turned over to secular proponents of infanticide.
Ironic that some people at Notre Dame, who strive to unmoor the university from Catholic values, gave Walker Percy, the Catholic author, an award. Oh well, there's always hope that the pro-life faculty and students at Notre Dame can overcome the anti-Catholic ones and become a Catholic university once again.
More like slow advancing rot than irony. There are actual Catholics attending Notre Dame. We are 30 years down the line from this speech and award. But you are correct to point out one of the symptoms of the Land O' Lakes Conference of 1967. Which basically stated Notre Dame would side with the idea that Catholics ought to practice contraception. Thanks, Father Hesbergh.
he was discussed by his friend, Shelby Foote.
He received this award on May 21, 1989. He died less than a year later on May 10, 1990.
My, my. How things have become even more deranged in academia...
HEAR HEAR
I'm reading Lancelot this morning. Could it be Walker Percy's even darker homage to Notes from the Underground? Good morning to all who have listened to the message of Percy, and may he rest in peace. And may the living keep up the "search."
Raphael Maurice I'm reading Lancelot right now. Just started. I'm hoping for better luck at understanding it. The Last Gentleman was good, but I knew there was a lot I was missing.
Thank you. Hope you are well. Thank you for remembering Percy.
You've got to admit their fight in the nursing home was pretty hilarious though
I recently finished The Second Coming. I will long remember Will's idea involving the three nursing home residents. I'm glad Percy decided to contradict the notion that old folks have little to offer and should therefore submit to pressure withdraw from life.
