Sadly this industry is still predominantly white male and very minimal diversity. Just finished a pathway program with the ibew pathway women program with local 353 at the Oshawa center in Ontario where as a person of colour experienced some very colonial ideologies and practices from a few of there instructors sadly one is a mental health facilitator and the other a human rights advocate but neither of them displayed that. Be mindful of joining especially if you're a person of Colour. They need serious diversity and inclusion programs and training. Over 13k electricians and 1% women? And how many people of colour.... Sounds scary for an industry starving for workers. Perhaps it's time to take our skills and knowledge back to Africa seeing that there's no respect in the trades all across.

It's really disheartening to know what the front line workers are going through to do their work in a safe and professional manner.. As unions and citizens we need to pressure our politicians and governments to respect the front line workers by supplying them with enough up-to-date PPE's, staffing levels and by paying them decently.. Thanks for taking care of us.👍
