Why this is the perfect time to read Demons by Dostoevsky
Просмотров 26 тыс.4 года назад
No matter your political affiliation it is clear the United States is experiencing tumultuous times. Amazingly, a book written over a hundred years ago about Russia has a great deal of insight into where we are and maybe where we are going. This video makes the case that Demons is a book worth your time.

In this video we explore Dostoevsky's view of the ubermensch. In other words, how do we know the difference between right and wrong and does morality require God?

    I’m not an American, but at least from an American perspective, universal franchise is because you have the risk of conscription correct? I mean, I know women can’t be conscripted and they have the vote, but for men franchise and vote is guaranteed only because you default to the possibility of conscription correct that’s what I’ve heard I’m probably wrong?

    The educational system in the US, in particular, has declined so rapidly and is being politicized by a dangerous group of desperate men. Most adults do not evolve their perspective and continue to seek knowledge they would not otherwise be encounter in their careers or busy lives. The US has become increasingly myopic and ethnocentric without regard for true freedom of thought, religion, ideology, respect or peace; traded for authoritarianism, nationalism, racism, Hate, violence, Scams & Lies, a preponderance of the Ignorant. In less than a decade -- WOW!

    Misreading this novel - it's not about socialism ... you forgot that the two protagonists were in America and came back with the ideas of liberalism ... liberalism essentially, through anarchism (even nihilism - nothing sacred) leads to - a new totalitarianism . That is the point, and it is very easy to understand when you compare it with today's America, which is the founder of liberalism "almost everything is allowed" ...

    • @lunedefroid8817
      @lunedefroid8817 2 года назад

      Verkhovensky senior was a liberal, but Verkhovensky junior was an anarchist. So yeah the book is mostly about anarchists. Plus, there's a couple of things that one might need to know to have better understanding: 1) Anarchists were terrorists in 19th century. Anarchists killed Alexander II(Tsar of Russia), Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed by the anarchists. And many more. 2) Dostoevsky knew Bakunin who was the biggest anarchist thinker of the time. And he also lived at the time of Marx, so he witnessed a lot of radicals himself. 3) The book has is written after a real event, Nechaev's murder of a member of his revolutionary/terrorist cell who was judged as traitor. Dostoevsky was anti-Enlightenment, anti-Marxist, and anti-Anarchist, anti-Nihilist. Mostly on his religious and philosophical ground.

    Great suggestion. I was blown away by how topical it was. Full of wisdom when it comes to revolutionary mindset, radical motivations, etc. The book could very easily be set in contemporary USA with a few changes; the characters would still feel realistic and the insight still relevant.

      The first 200 pages is basically chapter 1 and it's all about Dostoevsky basically making the entire plot and setting it all up. Like seriously. It took him 200 pages for an introduction.

    There is a chapter in this book titled "The Meeting" where a character Virginsky theories about making "man happy" and begins with the abstract unlimited freedom and ends up creating a totaliritarian state to protect the "freedoms". In the end it is required that tens of millions need to be killed to maintan that type of state. Dostoevsky foresaw the communist state before it had been concived by simple analysing the ideas of communism.

    • @haikat4
      @haikat4 2 года назад

      *"I got entangled in my own data, and my conclusion directly contradicts the idea from which I start. Starting from unlimited freedom, I conclude with unlimited despotism. I will add, however, that apart from my solution to the social formula, there can be no other."* Not only is it hilarious, but the foresight is nothing less than prophetic. The far-left in a nutshell, pretty much! It was actually Shigalyov who shared his theories at the meeting, I add just for the sake of accuracy :)

    I have a question Gentlemen In the Part 1, Chapter 3 - The sins of others, there is a discussion between Kirillov and the narrator. In this discussion, kirillov says there are two reasons that restrict people from committing suicide First reason is pain which is understandable. Second reason is the other world. I could not understand this and how does this stops people. I would be very happy if someone explained to me this discussion. I am toiling day in and day out to understand this but my limited literary understanding proves insufficient. Please help, Gentlemen

      Dear reading addict: People considering suicide often think about the "other side." Which is hell. If such A place, ( Which there is.). Is eternal torture, forever non stop. And consider is it worth the risk? If suicide is guaranteed banishment from God and punishment by hell. Suicide is out of the question. And suicide will never be considered again. Do not doubt hell. It's there and it's real. Need proof? Consider life here on earth. This is just A mire glimpse of what hell is. If life for us is hell now. You've seen nothing yet. Please I hope this helps.

    Anytime is the perfect time to read Dostoevsky. Demons, or Devils, is my fith Dostoevsky novel to date. I'm completely captivated by Dostoevsky's insight and superb storytelling, especially his ability to illustrate human nature at its lowest and highest points. We are experiencing this new radicalism today. There, sitting in their ivory towers, their elitist enablers experience delight in contributing to destructive forces attacking traditional values, much like our so called leaders are doing today.
