Why this is the perfect time to read Demons by Dostoevsky
Просмотров 26 тыс.4 года назад
No matter your political affiliation it is clear the United States is experiencing tumultuous times. Amazingly, a book written over a hundred years ago about Russia has a great deal of insight into where we are and maybe where we are going. This video makes the case that Demons is a book worth your time.
Lessons from Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment

In this video we explore Dostoevsky's view of the ubermensch. In other words, how do we know the difference between right and wrong and does morality require God?
Will definitely check the book out. I love this story of how even in a failed mission Shackleton managed to get everyone though alive in the most inhospitable place on earth when everything is going wrong.
Whatttt!! Very alpha content.
ironically it wasnt just military, it could be building, admin ect. you had to be willing to give up something which would then show you you be more responsible. Military was just the fastest way
Would you like to know more?
Donald Trump needs to read this book.
You forgot Christian Bale in Equilibrium
Ringos death was extreme.
I’m not an American, but at least from an American perspective, universal franchise is because you have the risk of conscription correct? I mean, I know women can’t be conscripted and they have the vote, but for men franchise and vote is guaranteed only because you default to the possibility of conscription correct that’s what I’ve heard I’m probably wrong?
Shit. This perspective is more compelling than I'd like to admit.
GREAT summary - thanks!
Why the hell doesn't this have more views?
Because the Sargon of Akkad video exists
BEST LITERATURE _ PURE GENIUS

also known as *The Possessed*
Great video
The educational system in the US, in particular, has declined so rapidly and is being politicized by a dangerous group of desperate men. Most adults do not evolve their perspective and continue to seek knowledge they would not otherwise be encounter in their careers or busy lives. The US has become increasingly myopic and ethnocentric without regard for true freedom of thought, religion, ideology, respect or peace; traded for authoritarianism, nationalism, racism, Hate, violence, Scams & Lies, a preponderance of the Ignorant. In less than a decade -- WOW!
dough stoy evsky
I've been showing the utube video, "what is a citizen", years ago. The more time passes, the truer it rings.
I absolutely liked the video. Hope you make a similar one on brothers karamazov.
0:44 couldn't you put a little more effort to find a proper map of Russian Empire with proper borders?
😎👍
Big like
Holy shit... it's almost like he was right...
I love Dostoevsky, but Don’t know why “demons” wasn’t what was I expecting
Misreading this novel - it's not about socialism ... you forgot that the two protagonists were in America and came back with the ideas of liberalism ... liberalism essentially, through anarchism (even nihilism - nothing sacred) leads to - a new totalitarianism . That is the point, and it is very easy to understand when you compare it with today's America, which is the founder of liberalism "almost everything is allowed" ...
Verkhovensky senior was a liberal, but Verkhovensky junior was an anarchist. So yeah the book is mostly about anarchists. Plus, there's a couple of things that one might need to know to have better understanding: 1) Anarchists were terrorists in 19th century. Anarchists killed Alexander II(Tsar of Russia), Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed by the anarchists. And many more. 2) Dostoevsky knew Bakunin who was the biggest anarchist thinker of the time. And he also lived at the time of Marx, so he witnessed a lot of radicals himself. 3) The book has is written after a real event, Nechaev's murder of a member of his revolutionary/terrorist cell who was judged as traitor. Dostoevsky was anti-Enlightenment, anti-Marxist, and anti-Anarchist, anti-Nihilist. Mostly on his religious and philosophical ground.
Great suggestion. I was blown away by how topical it was. Full of wisdom when it comes to revolutionary mindset, radical motivations, etc. The book could very easily be set in contemporary USA with a few changes; the characters would still feel realistic and the insight still relevant.
Is this professor emery that taught at iub??
0:13 Damn, that Crime and Punishment cover is something else....
Ol’ Dosty is my favorite author of all time. Didn’t know why until I heard Peterson analyze him. Crime and Punishment is riveting and I’ve read it three times. Gonna give this one a go.
Best advice I got before reading this book is that the first 200 pages are super boring. After that it starts to get going.
The first 200 pages is basically chapter 1 and it's all about Dostoevsky basically making the entire plot and setting it all up. Like seriously. It took him 200 pages for an introduction.
Un libro profético....la historia de repite , lo veo a mí alrededor...desde Sudamérica , gracias 🌈🌴 🌄
There is a chapter in this book titled "The Meeting" where a character Virginsky theories about making "man happy" and begins with the abstract unlimited freedom and ends up creating a totaliritarian state to protect the "freedoms". In the end it is required that tens of millions need to be killed to maintan that type of state. Dostoevsky foresaw the communist state before it had been concived by simple analysing the ideas of communism.
*"I got entangled in my own data, and my conclusion directly contradicts the idea from which I start. Starting from unlimited freedom, I conclude with unlimited despotism. I will add, however, that apart from my solution to the social formula, there can be no other."* Not only is it hilarious, but the foresight is nothing less than prophetic. The far-left in a nutshell, pretty much! It was actually Shigalyov who shared his theories at the meeting, I add just for the sake of accuracy :)
He described 3 totalitarian secular post-christian religions - communism, fascism, liberalism. All in one pile. The horror of secular religion
@@tingleblade4274 Perhaps there IS something to monarchy! 🧐 🤔
Nihilism started whit the collapse of Constantinople. When orthodox Christianity collapsed. U can read about it all the way whit the arrival of bloody ISLAM.LONG LONG BEFORE DOSTOYEVSKY NITSCHE NAPOLEON AND WHAT NPT… Dostoyevsky was a huge influence on Nitsche,,,Nitsche was a huge influence on Hitler and STALIN And Mussolini and all the goons that nearly destroyed the world in prestige or huge ego
Been listening to an audio version of demons for a while. Hate to say it but your video contains spoilers. That might not be totally fair coming from me because I have an unusually low tolerance for any hint of spoilers.
I have a question Gentlemen In the Part 1, Chapter 3 - The sins of others, there is a discussion between Kirillov and the narrator. In this discussion, kirillov says there are two reasons that restrict people from committing suicide First reason is pain which is understandable. Second reason is the other world. I could not understand this and how does this stops people. I would be very happy if someone explained to me this discussion. I am toiling day in and day out to understand this but my limited literary understanding proves insufficient. Please help, Gentlemen
Hey John. This specific claim of his is meant to be vague in the beginning and he will reveal his true meaning at the end. It is quite powerful and profound. If you finish and still have questions I will be happy to discuss further. Enjoy!
@@jemrey1 Thank-you for your help. I will definitely get back to you. Take care and thanks for not revealing it to me
Dear reading addict: People considering suicide often think about the "other side." Which is hell. If such A place, ( Which there is.). Is eternal torture, forever non stop. And consider is it worth the risk? If suicide is guaranteed banishment from God and punishment by hell. Suicide is out of the question. And suicide will never be considered again. Do not doubt hell. It's there and it's real. Need proof? Consider life here on earth. This is just A mire glimpse of what hell is. If life for us is hell now. You've seen nothing yet. Please I hope this helps.
Nice connection between Nietzsche and Dostoevsky
Started reading The Player, will definitely add Demons to my reading list in the near future.
Anytime is the perfect time to read Dostoevsky. Demons, or Devils, is my fith Dostoevsky novel to date. I'm completely captivated by Dostoevsky's insight and superb storytelling, especially his ability to illustrate human nature at its lowest and highest points. We are experiencing this new radicalism today. There, sitting in their ivory towers, their elitist enablers experience delight in contributing to destructive forces attacking traditional values, much like our so called leaders are doing today.
I need to go back and read Demons again. After all I read The Brothers Karamazov twice. And will read it a third time someday.
NOT Devils. DEONS - there is a big difference in Russian language
One of the best books I've ever read 🙌
Awesome video thank you!!!!
Will add this to my reading list, currently half way through The Brothers Karamazov - and I love it
Glad to hear it! Just a bit of a warning, the first 200 pages are tough to get through but after that it get's much more interesting. Demons is a slow burn but worth it.
@Sam Balderson yes 100%!!! These books hit you so much harder when you are ready. I actually recently started demons and I like it too
MAN FROM THE UNDEGROUND BY DOSTOEVSKY JUST AS GOOD
Time will only tell??? Open your eyes bud.
Industrial-Technological society has been disaster for humans. Also no system ever born out of rationality worked. People really are trying to act like gods.
Good video
Continue with your work bro you will grow with time. You can put a nice background music to make sound better and drawings were good but the continous hand movement made it a little uninteressing.
Just finished this book a few weeks ago. The themes resonated strongly with what is currently happening in the U.S. and the world. Wish Dostoevsky was required reading in school and to be in government... "We're all scoundrels."
I took a Dostoyevsky class at my college--sadly the class was temporary and isn't being taught regularly. But it was a life-changing class.
definitely agree
Agree 100 percent
You got a new suscriber :D
Hello Mister Jacob didn't know you have a RUclips channel but sure I'll read the book before class
the point / conclusion is good. the execution is mediocrer.. the drawins detract from it.. thanks anyway
Another huge problem in America is not enough people know who Dostoevsky was...
Truth.
Woot. They do. Dostoyevsky and Nitsche arrived to America whit arrival of Wa2 and what happened there, Freud’s psychoanalysis was entirely derived from Works of Dostoyevsky and he said sp
well noticed
I agree
Great video! I will definitely read it.
