How to Install a Kick Starter on an Electric Start Suzuki DR350
I take you step by step through the installation of a kick starter in an electric start Suzuki DR350SE and show all the parts needed. The parts and procedure are the same on DR250 and DRZ250. There are many kits available to add a kickstarter to a DRZ400 and the installation would be the basically the same but the orientation of the parts are different (and the kits come with a decompression lever that would need to be installed).
Skip ahead to minute 10:25 for the internal installation.
Here is what I paid:
Lever $30 (Used-Ebay)
Shaft $43 (Used-Ebay)
Parts $52 (New-Webike-Japan)
Bolts $4 (New-Tractor Supply)
Total $129
(All prices include shipping and were rounded up to the next dollar)

The Best Campsite in the Campground! I saw Sasquatch! (driven by Jason @ Primal Outdoors)
Просмотров 3712 года назад
We camp next to the Umpqua River at Susan Creek Campground, where we cook some Epic Meals. I take a motorcycle ride on my DR350 into Umpqua Forest and see Jason from Primal Outdoors driving his Van "Sasquatch" along the way. Seeing him was a bit of a thrill as we've been watching his channel for years. The weather was very warm and the bugs were crazy but we had a fantastic time.

Riding my Suzuki DR350 in the Mountains of Southern Oregon
Great work.
So will the blinker wire work for both blinker and running light or do I need to connect 1 diode to running wire and 1 to blinker?
The problems that arise from using LED turn signals come from the blinker indicator light on your gauges. The diode fixes that. Running lights are not a problem.
Will also sort the rear indicator bulbs are do you need to fit another diode to the rear?
No, this fixes front and rear. The diode kit is actually fixing the indicator lights on your dash or instrument cluster that goes haywire after installing LED's. If you are getting hyper flash ( blinking really fast) or maybe not blinking at all, you with need a LED Flasher Relay similar to this: www.amazon.com/Flasher-Blinker-Signal-Motorcycle-Modification/dp/B08FDKT47Y
Hello! Thank you for this awesome video! I am thinking of adding a kick start to my 97’ Dr350se. Will this eliminate the basic security the key provides? Can someone essentially hop on and ride off without a key? Or is there a kill switch of some sort integrated in these models? Thank you for any and all additional information!
Your bike won't start if the key isn't turned on with the kick start or the electric starter.
My question is, can be installed electric starter to a kickstarter 🤔?
Question for you.. did the install, now clutch seems like it's not fully releasing despite cable adjustments (impossible to get neutral)..do you think I may of over torqued the clutch basket- I went on the high side of 48ip on a cheap harbor freight wrench...
Yea, common problem with th DR. You need to leave the center nut almost loose. The fix for this is to take a little bit of aluminum off the back side of the clutch basket with a belt sander or something. I did this to mine when I had it apart because I always had that problem before I did this. Google it and you should be able to find some info on doing it.
@@DR350Rider1 thanks for the info, I'll look into it..
@@AzPauly Also there are 2 thrust washers on each side of the basket and they wear and make the problem even worse. If they are grooved they should be replaced (or they can be flipped over once). I had already flipped mine over once before so I replaced mine while I had it open. I think the part number I got was 08211-20363.
@@umpquaoutdoors Thank you, my bike only has 4k on it.., had it apart to install the kick start, now it's not fully releasing and is hard to find neutral-it was always a little tricky but definitely worse now...not super excited to take it apart again, maybe in a few months when it's cooler here in Phoenix..
can you use any wire to ground it with the battery ?
Yea, pretty much any wire, you're just testing the gauge to see if it works
@@umpquaoutdoors just tried it, gauge didn’t move at all. But there’s current on the wire itself so I’m assuming it’s the gauge that doesn’t work
Thank you for this video
What size wire do you use
You need to look at the wires on your bike and match the size wire there (or bigger).
Your more tolerant of old Mitchell reels than I am, I hated them then, no chance I'd use one now. Hated them.
I picked up a donor DR250 to do this conversion to my DR350SE..Did you use blue or red locktight (and or is there a hi temp locktight I should look for) on the internal fasteners? Also, did you use any sealant on the cover gasket or just clean and dry? Thank you so much for posting this video!
I think I used red only because that's what I had at the time. As for the gasket, I used a new gasket and put it on dry.
@@umpquaoutdoors Did the install today, thanks again for posting-a terrific help!
Hello, I made the diode kit from your video and then installed it the same way, but the dashboard light does not come on when the turn signals flash, suzuki intruder 1400.
Best most descriptive, easy to follow, sir you have changed my life for the better
Best thig to use is wholly worm fly or a dimand lake special fly
Nice Video SIR! Is it possible to insert a E-Starter to a dr350s ?
It's not really possible to add electric start to a kick start bike. You would have to get an e-start motor (and then use the parts from your kick start motor to add the kick starter to the newer motor if you want both)
horrible video what a waste , go away.
You said you were fishing with a little Chloe can you say how fast you were trolling and I believe you’re using a Mitchell 300 nice reels
I was trolling about 2 MPH. I have a little tachometer on my kicker motor so when I find a speed that seems to be working good I can stay there. I've been using Mitchell 300's for well over 50 years. I probably have 20 of them as well as some bigger and smaller size Mitchells. I still have my first Mitchell 300 that was made in the early 60"s before Garcia bought them.
Can you tell me what month you were on diamond Lake? It looks like you did well.
I think that trip was the first week of June of 2022. Had a lot of fun catching Browns, they fight hard, but we were camping and I was looking to have a Rainbow trout dinner. Ever since they put the browns and tigers in there it's been a challenge to get Rainbows. Before that I used to limit out on 16" to 24" rainbows by noon everyday.
This is so coool! I can't believe you made this.. I thought it was store bought! thanks for the video!
love this video. Love the DR350 as well. Good job!

Hi Nice Video! I have the bike and i think about, to do the same. ( Install a kicker). You explain very well, so its look so easy. Thank you! Nice greats from Germany.
AWSOME!! anybody know if this miracle is possible for a dr650 2016? I never trust 100% on an electric starter
As far as I've heard it isn't possible. 95 and older DR650 had kick start. 96 and newer DR650SE you are stuck with electric start only.
Just ordered a set ! Thanks! Thats a slick heat shield fabrication
93 Dr 350 owner. Kick only. Is it possible to install an electric starter?
Possible, yes. But it would probably be cheaper to sell your bike and buy an electric start bike. E-start motors use a different case so you would pretty much have to buy an e-start motor and wiring, bigger battery, CDI, different intake manifold, airboot and carburetor.. There are a few relay/sensors involved. It wouldn't be cheap or easy.
How do you make the diode kit?

i have the black ones on both my sportsters..they work great and i never had a problem with the d rings...maybe just used to em from when i was in the army
Hi did your cooling fan turn on properly?
I have a mechanical cooling fan (run by a belt).
hi, first of all thanks for the video. very helpful information and well explained, wondering if you or someone here could help me, i got these led turn signals with 3 wires one for the running daylight and before installing the diode kit i tried by unplugging the light bulb of the indicator everything worked, day lights and turn signals, but when i installed the diode kit turn signals work but if i try the 3rd wire for running daylight it goes back to same issue,
You haven't given enough info to diagnose this. The running light wire shouldn't effect the turn indicator circuit. What is the issue you're getting when you plug the running light wire in? What are you plugging the 3rd wire into? Did your bike have running lights before?
Is the fishing good in late July early August
Good job on that mod sir. 👍
Same issue on a 96 Ranger with the 3.0. Ground sender, gauge pegs to hot. So, not the instrument cluster. Drive for a while, gauge will stay pegged below cold, even when engine is hot, then later, after thermostat opens, then gauge will suddenly move to the center, takes around 15 minutes. Ford thought it was the Sensor, since I already changed the Sender AND I checked the Sender wire and it is making a good electrical connection. So, changed the sensor too, same issue. So, still unsolved.
My guess is the thermostat is sticking/bad. It sounds like it's sticking till it gets warm and then finally pops open and probably gets stuck in that position. I have a '98 Ranger 4.0 and when I first bought it the thermostat was stuck wide open, The gauge never moved, the motor didn't warm up much and the heater didn't put out any heat.
Thank you for sharing this.
Great Video!!!
Nice charring on the edges but the top doesn't look baked enough. You have a very good pizza oven and all you have to do is lift the pizza with the pizza peel to "Dome" it and the top will get the necessary heat from the flames to brown the top a bit more.
Yes, using this oven it an ongoing learning experience. I built it well over a year ago and still every pizza comes out a little different. Got to get the stone just the right temp and the fire the right size, it's easy to get one or the other or both too hot (or not hot enough). But there is nothing like a wood fire pizza, even one that doesn't come out perfect.
Your dog is looking at your pizza maker and thinking - "when is dad gonna make some pizza and give me some? I'm starving"
What is the material the screen is made of. Thx
It's some steel galvanized mesh I had laying around. I folded the top and bottom edges over for a little extra strength.
@@umpquaoutdoors Thanks I gotta buy some at HD
i did this and the relay started buzzing and no turn signals lit - xr650l
It sounds like you will need an LED Flasher Relay like this: www.amazon.com/Flasher-Blinker-Signal-Motorcycle-Modification/dp/B08FDKT47Y. These are nice because you can also adjust the speed the it blinks. Some bikes need them and some don't.
@@umpquaoutdoors Do you also suspect a failed diode?
@@orlandoholwerda2373 No, the diode fixes the problems that arise from having LED's with a single indicator light on the instrument cluster. Power can only travel in one direction with LED's. It's a totally different problem then the flasher. With some stock flashers, LED's don't put out enough power for the flasher relay to recognize them so you need a flasher that will work with the small power that LED lights use. It's kind of the same thing that happens in some cars when you tow a trailer and have too many lights blinking and get hyper flash (blinking really fast).
I guess I should also tell you to check your Flasher Relay to see how many connector prongs it has, either 2 or 3, and get an LED relay to match. The one I showed you at Amazon is a 3 prong, but if yours is only 2 prong, then look for one of those.
@@umpquaoutdoors i just want you to know how informative and helpful you are, thank you!
I have the same exact smoker, what heat setting did you set it at?
Cheap and nasty fuckin crap!! Not worth $2.00
I changed my sensor Ford E-150 5.8L W. It was reading very low all the time with the new sender in it reads above the 1/2 way. Still in Normal Range but above 1/2. I measured the temp with a digital thermometer at 159 F. Mike
What ? I thought that's where the lever comes in and that's all... No, then I won't do that
solid routing skills
How do you know the proper diode size to use?
I want to know the same as you.
Do you know if this will work with a 1N4007? I already have a bunch of those, and the only difference is reverse voltage rating of 50v vs 1000v
I don't know alot about electrical components but I would guess it would work. As someone commented below "people say its ok to replace a diode with one of higher specs". I would try it and see what happens.
Where do you find all the torque-specs for the bolts??
Woah man, this is the EXACT video i was looking for... With parts, numbers and everything...You are amazing!!!! I love the DR-Community
