Sailing Puget Sound May 15, 2011 in the Islander 36

This is what happens when you make the corner around the south side of Bainbridge Island and find yourself coming into a strong current being aided by a 30 knot northerly headwind. I finally gave up and pointed to weather and went to the first reef on the main and furled the headsail to about 90%. Picked up a knot over ground when I did, funny how that works.

Me messing around with my gypo lapsteel setup. The white noise and clicking in the background are 30 knot winds and the rigging slapping against the mast. No mic, so you'll have to turn it way up to hear anything. And if you have the ability to adjust your bass level, you'll need to dime that too, I need some new strings. The first half is me working through the diatonic scale and a loose inter...
Leaving Port Ludlow in the Islander 36 on a perfect windy morning

The Islander running abeam at around 9.5 sog. I'm heading for Point No Point with 15-20 knots of wind coming from the North. This all took place around 8-8:30 on Thursday morning. doesn't get too much better, Stayed above 6.5 all day no matter how I was pointed, a good portion running.
Singlehanding the Islander 36 to 10.3 mph speed over ground

This was a single handed trip to James Island in the San Juan Islands. Approaching Port Townsend at the time I was going into a very light current (3 foot tidal change) with 20-25 knots of wind behind me. I was on a broad reach with all the sails out and the boat seemed to love it. I actually hit 10.9 about ten minutes later but had no video rolling, too bad. I could have gone a little faster o...
Sailing an Islander 36 towards Foulweather Bluff.

This is in 25-30 knot apparent headwinds. Close hulled with the headsail reefed to about 110%. Kind of a bumpy ride with 1-2 foot chop only a couple of seconds off of each other. Fun no matter how you look at it.
March sailing in the Puget Sound on the Islander 36

Bella Luna (soon to be renamed) on the Puget Sound around the Blake Island area on an overcast March Sunday. Winds were light, 10-12 apparent at the most. The Islander still cruised along around 5.5, not too bad for the dacron. As you can see, this boat is easy to balance, there's no autopilot here, just the wheel lock and sail trim. The video is getting a little better now that I understand ho...
sailing in February on an islander 36
Просмотров 4,9 тыс.14 лет назад
Some friends and I sailing my Islander 36 in the Puget Sound on a perfect February day. Some other sailors may not believe this, but my Islander was at or near hull speed when close hauled with 12-15 knot winds and a 125 furler jib (6.5 oz dacron). I have the Martek folding prop, which gives me a little, but this boat just seems to sail incredibly well under light/med wind conditions. Haven't w...
Seen these guys in early 2000's, opening @ the Paramount theater in Seattle, WA, n' lemme tell yees, I was un-flatly astounded, SMAA flat BLEW shit up, jus' bashed, beat n' crater-faced the headliners skulls ta' bitz before they even got out n' played!...HA! Even the total energy of the crowd>band interface seemingly went dead after SMAA's set ended Shit, I was satiated, satisfied n' ready to bounce tha show after they hung it up onna peg, before closer/headliner even hit its first note.... ~Had ta' kind feel for "Oysterhead". Sheesh!. .Talked about: Kick'd Outta Tha Bar before ya even see yer first drink eh?...;) (O.H: Trey Anastasio, Stuart Copeland & Less Claypoole's own project)

Kiwi you're welcome anytime in the Memphis area.
such a dank jam!
Luther gets all the love due to that 335 magic, but Cody is immersed in all aspects of music. Playing, multi instrumentalist, production, engineering, these guys are just badass.
and Cody's drum cadences are so spot on, he's a badass for sure
Just discovered them. WOW !!!
You’ve made a top shelf discovery my friend.
agree.
Oh, I definitely like the original/RL Burnside's Poor Black Maddie better, but I'm so glad people are keeping this music alive. I will absolutely be checking this band out. Raw, dirty, southern blues for LIFE.
They grew up across the fence from R.L. Burnside. They are the real deal...
FYI- This recording was from 20 years ago, just before they toured with Wide Spread Panic. The album was called "Shake hands with Shorty" - They still put on a great live show and are well worth the face value of the ticket. - Say no to scalpers. - LEG - aka LEFTEYEGIBBY
@bson9146 Thank you! Man, this is so good. I may even like it better than Burnside now ... but I just wish there were more of this all the time everywhere.
Yeah, my fav version I think. Got to see them live at the Cambridge folk festival, England... Before it was sold out to an organisation who want to dumb it down and take it mainstream. Sigh...
Love their stuff can't help but tap a toe
For the record.....I believe I pulled this version from the Shake Hands with Shorty album. The pause between Po Black Maddie and Skinny Woman is slightly incorrect as I had to copy these two tracks and then combine the two with software. I couldn't just copy the two tracks as one. The real version on the album is better in the transition. And yes RL Burnside did it first (which I probably have at least a FEW copies of), I tend to admire NMAs revision. Not that one is better, just that NMA absorbed the soul of these songs and properly gave credence to them in their recording......that is all.....back to work now.
Agreed. And with the NMAS live performances, I love the arrangements with lots of Chris Chew on background vocals for Skinny Woman.
I really like this version, can someone tell me where I can find it? It's not on itunes
Music is the experience enjoy the moment Fantastic guitar.. Great production value.. *)o(* let each artist be who they are an appreciate the talent they express..*)o(*b...
Great video. I have thousands of miles under keel of an I-36, and you are right, it is a dream to sail!
not to be a dick but this version just sounds too uptight and studied. check out R.L. - his sh*t is incredible.
R.L . is definitely more rootsy and I love his stuff, but Luther Dickenson is clearly the better musician. doesn't matter anyway R. L. Burnside supports this cover and even tours with the band sometimes
Po Black Maddie god daaaam!!!
@kwstakhs3 I've been looking too, always hear this on XM Jam On
Also LOVE the move into and out of Skinny Woman...ethereal
Finally the studio verson has been posted! NMA are such an underrated and extremely talented band and yet others with blues tinged music (eg Black Keys & White Stripes) have much more acclaim... Now if somebody could also post their version of Casey Jones...
speedrasser Thanks, I appreciate it and glad that you enjoyed the video. I do have a few others on here in case you haven't seen them yet, but this is my favorite. The other boat is an Olson 30, he's faster in the lighter winds (I'm a heavy live-aboard), but in moderate to heavy winds, he is overpowered and the Islander comes into her own. I'm really proud of this craft as I purchased it in pieces and in need of new paint and mechanical work. It is a dream to sail, balances and handles well.
Nick Drake good taste in tunes oh and I have a 1974 I36.
@bloodyfrets Thanks! Appreciate it.
Nice!
