The reason it may be more often reported in Toyota is because Toyota makes the #1 selling cars - Camry & Corolla. So, we hear more about from Toyota than other auto manufactures

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry V6 with less than 80K. A couple of weeks ago, I was driving my husband to a doctor's appt. and my husband looked at me and told me not to pay with the gas pedel. I told him I wasn't, the car was surging and picking up speed, he quickly put the car into neutral and the engine light came on and I put on the brake and coasted to a stop and the engine shut off. We were able to get the car home and found gas coming out under the car. We thought we just had a gas leek, but soon found out we had a big problem. I will call National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tomorrow and have them look into our situation. Our car had to be towed to a garage 30 miles from our home with unanswered problems. I really had faith in the Toyota name and have had these cars since the 70's. Never had a problem, but this one really scared me. The car has been in the shop for almost 2 weeks and has gas throughout the car that has caused major damage. So happy I found this report. My car is older but only has less than 80K on the engine. What a shame!!!

Today the TOYOTA dealership service department denied knowledge of your report again. I have been trying to get my Camry acceleration issues fixed since I bought it in 2007. The service department admitted that he knows about FLOOR MATS. He denied knowledge of this report on the Congressional investigation. I have photos of this and recall letters from Toyota. I was lucky and they refused to accept responsibility for the safety issues. This is pathetic.

All you had to do was put the car in neutral. People need to know this it will save lives

Defects that cause acceleration problems are extremely dangerous to the public. Manufacturers could do a better job in providing safer products, and especially in responding to these kinds of safety issues.

I have a 2003 Camry that lurched forward but the engine powered down with a check engine light. What happened was that I took out the throttle body to clean it. I accidentally got water into two of the openings that go to the electronics. It messed up the potentiometer inside the throttle body. I figured out that if I clean out the water with an electrical contact cleaner then it worked perfectly fine. I believe that moisture must be getting in to the system causing problems.

It could be from a stationary source, but I don't think so....otherwise the car would get out of range of the source and the problem would probably stop. These runaway cars that go for miles and miles have the guilty source emitter in the car with them.

This will probably turn out to be an EMI problem. Electromagnetic interference from a device within the car -- a system that is PART of the car, a cell phone, a cheap Chinese video game, a Happy Meal toy, etc. Something cheap. Something that coincidentally transmits the exact command the car looks for to tell it to go faster.
