First pruning and wiring of a set of Ulmus parvifolia (Chinese Elm) seedlings for bonsai training
Просмотров 116 часов назад
These seedlings were planted from seed in early winter 2023 that I collected in Hyde Park around the same time. This video was made in September 2024 and so the seedlings are less than one year old, and as can be seen, very healthy. www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/ulmus/ulmus-parvifolia/
First pruning and wiring of Nothofagus alpina sapling for bonsai training.
Просмотров 321 час назад
The common name of Nothofagus alpina is Raulí, which comes from the native language of Mapuche from the Andes. If I were to attempt to come up with an English common name, then I would go with Andes' Beech or Argentinian Mountain Beech. The species name alpina is confusing, but it just denotes that the tree's natural habitat is within the alpine zone of any mountainous region. This video was ta...

The wiring is done September 2024 and the purpose of this video is to show progression for when the tree is more mature. www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/liquidambar/liquidambar-styraciflua/
Progress review of my 1 year old Ostrya carpinifolia seedling

This is a review of the progress of my Ostrya carpinifolia seedling (European Hop Hornbeam). The seed was collected in the early winter of 2023 and planted in a seed tray and left outside over winter. This is an update on its progress in Autumn 2024. The ultimate aim of the tree is to be used for bonsai. The seed was collected from Hyde Park in London. www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/ostr...

Bonsai training my Cedrus deodara, early formative pruning
Просмотров 358 месяцев назад
I have a Cedrus deodara (Himalayan or Deodar Cedar) that I bought from a garden centre as a young tree. Last year I chopped the top off, pruned back the branches to a few buds and gave it a bit of a wire to get some movement into the trunk. This video shows what pruning I do in February 2024, as well as the fate of some of the cuttings I made during last year's pruning.

Frequency-Response Characteristic & The Probe-Signal Method
Have you kept your plant indoors? It looks absolutely beautiful!😊
Ah, nice comment, thank you. It's a lovely colour isn't it. I have kept it outside, unprotected, in my garden in London UK. If it doesn't root, then I can consider that it might have needed some protection, but for now, it's looking good and the top and bottom portions both have very good growth.
What are your expectations on how long it will take? thx
I have hopes, rather than expectations, hehe. I hope that by next August there will be roots. If there aren't, I'll take off the moss ball and see what is happening. I did two other airlayers of different trees at pretty much the same time, and both of those rooted within the same growing season, so if this doesn't take in the second, I will want to have a look to see what is happening.
Oooo lovely! I love the Podocarpus ‘Chocolate Box’ and ‘Guardsman’ as I enjoy the different purple/burgundy colour. Also enjoyed the Thuja ‘Fire Chief’ Thanks Ian xx
Ah, lovely to know. I wonder what different people's preferences are, so super interesting to know that you like these ones.
Hi! What types of soil do you use? And how do you keep the plant under summer?
Hello, I use a good quality peat-free compost, and add horticultural grit to it. Because I over-pot my trees, I add grit, to make sure that the water will drain through the soil, rather than remain soggy for large periods of time. In the UK, I think the best quality compost is Melcourt Silvagrow. In the summer, I leave pines in full sun, as they can take it, as long as they are watered regularly. It's difficult to make rules of thumb in horticulture, as everyone's conditions are unique, so the key is to pay attention to your plants, and review how they are doing. Trial and error is one of my key approaches. Don't be afraid to fail. Try it and enjoy the process.
What are the results? I collected loads of griseum seeds today, but i guess i need a whole lot moee 😅
Hello, sorry I didn't reply to you sooner, I haven't got the hang of keeping up with RUclips comments yet. Actually, this video I think is a bit of a false direction, in retrospect. I'm not sure that breaking dormancy is really the issue with Griseum seeds. Hopefully you planted those seeds, or have them in the fridge in some damp sand. My view with griseum seeds is that you simply don't have the embryo in the samara, so no amount of dormancy breaking is going to have an affect, simply because there's nothing to have an affect on. Just an empty shell. I opened a set of seeds that I picked in the Autumn last year and only about 5 out of 100 had an embryo in the samara. It's obvious when you have a samara with an embryo and one without. You see the issue. There is simply a big hole in the samara that doesn't have an embryo, and the one that does has what looks like a little round seed. So I think as an amateur, the best thing to do is simply put a very high volume of seeds in a seed tray, protect from squirrels and leave outside over the winter. That's my current view. A very small amount will germinate, which is to be expected. Professional botanists will process the samaras, and open them to find which ones have embryos and then only plant the embryos themselves. That is extremely difficult, as the samaras are very hard to open without crusing the embryos. One can use locking pliars to open the samaras, that don't fully close, so can crack the samara open, but lock before cracking the embryo. In answer to your question, some of the seeds germinated, but they pushed out in a very strange way, as if they were mutated. But I didn't have enough to form a reliable observation. As of this point in time, I have only managed to germinate griseum seeds by planting in bulk within the samara, straight after collecting, and leaving to stratify outside over the winter. I have a new batch outside this year, of about 300 samaras from different trees in London. I will probably record a video to show the results of that and share my views on the situation. If you are planning on doing research on this, then the botanical name for the missing embryo is referred to as pathenocarpic.
Very informative! Thank you for sharing
