This Solar GPS Astron is something that could be used by sailors at sea that require precise time keeping. I bought one with the 5X53 movement for that purpose. Seiko claims that with GPS it is accurate to +/- 1 sec every 100,000 years. For a sailor at sea, there's no need to wind, or receive a timekeeping signal via radio. You just point it at the sky and it keeps proper time.

I’ve watched several of your videos and I have a lot of thoughts but I run the risk of sounding snarky. 1. You should learn composition. It will help with your digital photos also. 2. I hear in your videos a lot “yeah, this is “X.” “This looks interesting.” “This looks artsy.” This is my entirely subjective opinion, but usually when taking a photograph, the photographer is trying to convey something instead of aimlessly snapping away. It might help to have a plan before heading out, as it will help tell a story. Please understand basic photographic principles. Learn how ISO, shutter speed, aperture work together and how each of these things affect the exposure and depth of field of the photo. Learn how different filters affect the film. Orange/blue/red, etc. If your light meters don’t work, buy a light meter or download an app on your phone. In one of your videos you said something about keeping the shutter at 1/500. you need to meter if you’re shooting anything other than ISO 100 in direct sunlight with the aperture stopped down to f16. Understanding bracketing will help you nail the correct exposure also. You may want to research different films and look at examples on Flickr or other sites. Understand how different films and the exposure will affect contrast and overall tonality. If you’re worried about the cost of developing film: Develop your own negatives. It’s not hard. If I can do it, most people can. Look for mail order developing shops. It’s typically much less than going to a local shop. And look online for film. Don’t be afraid to try affordable brands and see what you like the best.

Great review! Coming here after getting a 5x53 Astron. I read that all the hands self align after reaching the 12 position. The micro clasp on mine seems to be easily adjustable compared to yours. Mine has UTC codes but i prefer the city names like yours.

First video tonight that isn't loud, and grating with awful noise (erm, music) looping in the background. Secondly, I have always wanted one of these compact cameras., I think I will get one, as a Christmas gift to myself. I really like how square / boxy they are, and from what i've read, they do too have good build quality. This, or the soon to be released Rollei 35AF from MiNT. The challenge will be ( if getting the legacy Rollei), is to get a clean (recently CLA'ed) copy, that I can take with me to Hokkaido in November. the best to you Jake.

IMHO, UTC offset numbers on the bezel would make for a better look than these city codes. Know your time zone by the UTC offset.

It looks like the Citizen Attessa, just not as fancy as the Hakuta-R.

Dude, don't wait until you drop the camera to get a strap! BTW, 35mm will never replicate the sharpness of a digital camera shooting on raw, but when the photo is printed and in the album, you won't notice the difference in definition. What you will notice is the difference in colour, tone, and expression. And you'll feel proud of the artistic achievement that went into creating the analogue photo.

PS... not make it your primary camera? Wait until you've learned how to process your own film. Then you'll only ever see digital as a backup! Film is an art form, digital is bread and butter. Like the difference between riding a motorbike and driving a family car!

OK, the battery is not an issue. Wein make 1.35 V replacement, they're readily available online. Otherwise a LR44 1.5 V battery will work fine. Some people moan that the light meter reads wrong, but it's in the order of 11% which is as near as dammit. I have a 303b which is under repair at the moment and the shop have lent me a 101 in the meantime. Both work fine with the LR44 battery in. I learned manual photography about 25 years ago with a Dynax 404si, probably not the best camera for that job as its controls are very similar to modern digital cameras, but I soon progressed on to a Nikon FE, which is very similar to the Minolta SRT line. You'll love it, having to manually focus, and set your aperture and shutter speed will help you learn so much, teach you how to manage light, and make you a much better photographer. I like it a lot. Is there a way to determine power reserve on this watch? I like a second hand for that but otherwise I don't need it.

Set the apeture and shutter speed,then match the infinity mark to the apeture you've set.Then you can read off the amount of distance that will be in apparent focus,fiddly on such a small camera but doable with patience....................................

SRT 101 was my first SLR camera, I purchase it in 1973 if I remember right. I use to developed B&W film and printed photos in my darkroom setup. Still have some prints and negatives.

New subcriber here. Enjoyed the video. The first image at 3:18 is my favourite one. It's just an ordinary scenery with those apartments. Nothing special or eye-catching. But there's the thing. Simplicity, lightning and sharpness in details. And using the yellow filter gives nice contrast and pops out the clouds in the sky.

Yeah I was saying to myself that the pictures did look really grainy, that is what 400 will do in day light. I would shoot 100 and maybe 200. Could be your future videos will show this, I'm only up to part 4 so far. You do have some really nice scenery to work with.

You have a really good eye for design. The SRT 101 is still a great camera in the right hands.

I have a Rollei 35S and have taken some great photos but also some misses - usually close up because there is no parallax correction - in the viewfinder there are hooks on the framelines on the LHS which you have to change the composition to within the hooks when close. Use Hyperfocal distance to get as much in focus - easier with narrower apertures- Enjoy!

I happened to start using a Rollei35T a month ago when my Fuji Klasse S was broken. I am enjoying the tiny camera very much! 😊

Just got an SRT 303. Mint w lens for under $100

Have you tried the MC lens on your Sony? I just bought an SRT101 at a shop up the street from my house. 25 bucks with a 58mm 1.4 lens. Also bought a 50 macro and a 28mm 3.5. Ordered an adapter so going to try the lenses on my A6300 & 7R3. Based off your photos the lens appears to be pretty sharp. Liked the video

Thank you so much for this video, its great to see your journey with film photography my advice will be: try different film stocks (color and also black and white) try the cheaper ones first and go to differents places citys, towns, mountains etc. try with harsh ligh, soft light, blue/golden hour, and find people who inspire you even the old masters like fan ho, Garry winnogrand, Robert frank can teach you a lot of things keep in mind there are tons and tons of people out there with different styles and also enjoy the process. my first camera is a minolta XG-M a truly classic from the 80s gosh love that camera. btw your minolta also looks so good, its a really minty one i bet your grandfather was a great photographer hope you understand what im trying to say my english its not so good and again thank you.

Back when I was getting into photography, the top dogs were Nikon and Leica. If you had the bread, you got a Nikon F or Leica M4. Right below that were the Pentax Spotmatic and the Nikkormat. Then you had Canon FTb and your grandpa's Minolta. All of them classic film cameras; any of them would do the job. Being a broke high school kid, I had to settle for the Canon TL (the FTb's cheaper sibling). But it, too, was a fine camera-did the job until I got my Leica.

One of the advantages of film is you have a finite number of shots and making exposure notes is easy and a good way to improve your film photography. Also, start with B&W.
