Wait wait, so if someone gets hired in a american grocery store, they are expected to always work the exact same task? Like always 8hours a day every day cash register? Thats insane, the monotony would kill me! I worked at a gas station, and imagining to work 6 hours only at the cash register, especially with the low phases where not a single customer would come sounds agonising

I like their special offers. I also bought the first home computer there, and did not regret it. They offer 2 years guarantee. And will deliver on it. Their repair centre in our case could be reached by car, train and bus. I delivered the PC tower, explained what I thought the matter was (virusses). Next thing they contacted me 10 days later: please fetch the PC, its ready. It was like new.

Most of those are simply the standard for grocery stores in Germany. I understand though why US grocery stores have developed differently and are more ‚luxurious‘, especially because of the car culture over there… although of course stuff like that comes crashing down when the country does

Aldi came to Ireland in the early 2000’s and nobody used to shop there as a lot of people thought that you were a cheap shopper. Joke and everything would be plentiful. But the crash came in 2008 and it exploded along with Lidl another German grocery chain. Both now have a massive market share in Ireland and their products are as good as their competitors. And their middle isle is priceless.

It's funny for me as a german to see a video like things because it mentions a lot of stuff i really dont things about and is normal for me. Like the still boxed stuff, that you can take mostly everything out the box, even a single bottle. That you have to pack the stuff yourself, like wtf. Even the labour for a bag boy here would be crazy. The solo cashier is also crazy fast and she has two checkout lines with two credit card maschines so the starts with the next customer even before the last payed. They also want you to go cashless.

In Germany we say: Wer nicht bei Aldi kauft ist selber schuld. This means translated: If you don’t shop at Aldi, it’s your own fault. Why is that? because if you shop at Aldi you save money. It is easy like that. It has nothing to do with cuture or stuff.

It is a bit amusing to watch this from a German perspective. Many of the mentioned efficiency measures are just common practice at all supermarkets in Germany. The coin locked shopping cart 🛒 for example ist totally normal. With labor costs being very high in Germany 🇩🇪, it would simply be very costly to have staff people caring for the carts all the time. Also, we never had staff people that would pack our items into bags for us or carry them to our cars. Again, that is simply not affordable here in Germany. The same with the card boxes that go into shelf with the items, to save time for staff members. All of that leaves a little more to do for yourself as a customer, but saves a significant amount of money. In the end the customers decide if that want a lot of helping hands or if they want efficiency driven low prices. In times like these, Aldi apparently provides a good option for many.

In 1961 the Albrecht Brothers (owners of Aldi) split the company into Aldi Nord und Aldi Süd after disagreeing over selling cigarettes or not. In Germany we still have both, in the USA on the other hand Aldi Süd is operating as Aldi and Aldi Nord bought the already existing store Trader Joe’s. I know this because when I was in the states I bought “mandarin orange chicken” from Trader Joe’s and it was absolutely delicious. So I hoped to find it at Aldi Nord but was not successful.
