MTH first produced this locomotive with their 'conventional' controlled original Protosound in 1999. They came out with PS2 around 2001 for which they reintroduced this Yellowstone again around 2006/2007 with PS2 of course. My father had bought one of these back then and it had chuffing smoke as well as a whistle, bell and chuffing sound which was synchronized with the smoke unit.

A very nice set of rolling stock. I'm a big fan of flatcars with vehicles on them. I've taken the wire strips off of mine and the loads stay in place nicely while rolling down the tracks. Thanks Mr Steve ! 👍

This is a very nice set. I have the same thing from my father when he bought it new. The only idsue i ever had with it was the roof of the caboose wasnt prepped right when painted and now the paint is flaking. The set isnt from 2011, but from 1998 with QSI sound. There is a 3rd run of the ore cars if you want to complete the set, in one of 1999 catalogs. As for the fist start up, thats the air pumps that QSI sound is making. A great comaprison would be similar to the cab forward released as well in 1998. Try looking up "southern pacific cab forwards over donner pass" and you will instantly understand why it sounds that way! As for the no chuffs at slow speeds, it means the backup battery is weak and old, you should replace with a rechargeable 9v or a BCR battery componet replacement capacitor. It must be a rechargeable bsttery due to the rechsrge features in the model while running. When you do get a fully charged battery, try resetting the loco with feature 18 on the z4000. When finished the loco will run good as new! Hope this helps!

Interesting. It looks like you are getting things sorted out. It is certainly a fine looking engine. I believe that sound is a pump, most likely for water, but I'm not sure. Someone familiar with steam locomotives could chime in and explain its operation. I'm no fan of traction tires. I only have one locomotive, an MTH Rail King Pacific, with them. I've replaced them once and I need to get a few more new ones. Since I'm a conventional, post-war/MPC-era collector, I really have no use for them, as MagneTraction works just fine on my layout. Either way, it will be nice, when you get it running properly. An excellent video, as always.

If you were an Army Vet and hooked it up to the other Army cars , it might be interesting to have . Hooked up to a regular consist it seems to be out of place . The rail sound at the end sounds good . I wouldn't say Shame
