Sometimes, it is so easy to be rude and code-switching when you are emotionally overloaded when you do not have enough words to express your emotions.
I have done this. In a group of people where not everybody understood Spanish, I apologized in advance to the English speakers before saying what was on my mind in Spanish. The key is to be aware of and respectful of the people in your group.
