    Thanks for your honest analysis. (black) Pushing the a pawn is very interesting, as you showed in your analysis, when you see the continuation, it makes a lot of sense. What can one do so that these moves popup on one's "Think Like A Grandmaster" candidate list?

    • @Uerdue
      @Uerdue День назад

      Well, in a way, a4 is one of the most natural moves in the position - if it didn't seemingly hang a pawn. So, I guess the tricky part is to not discard such moves too early. What may help with that is to realize that black is already in some sort of strategic trouble, or at least running the risk of being thrown on the defensive within the next few moves. (As white already has a clear plan to generate play on the q-side with Rb1 & an eventual bxc6, whereas it's not so obvious where black's play will come from. (You can play f5, sure, but how exactly to organize an attack from there? And could it backfire after exf5, opening white's bishop?)) This may help opening your mind a bit more to "radical" solutions, like considering what looks like a pawn sacrifice for a few moves further. What's also to be noted: With b5, c4, e4, h4 played, white's position is maybe somewhat "airy" or overextended. This can again give you a hint drastic measures are more likely to work out. Additionally, the coordination is suboptimal (Ra1 and Nc3 are still unprotected). This can give you a sense of urgency. ("If I have somehing in this position, then that's probably right now, and not in a few moves when white will have improved his coordination with, say Rb1 and Bd2.") Last, the knight on d4 is desperately seeking to connect with the rest of black's pieces. Its impact on the position isn't too high atm. Some of the squares it controls could otherwise be a good home for the white queen, but that's about it. It doesn't stop white's main plan in any way, which is again Rb1 and bxc6. (And it's not gonna live on d5 forever, anyway. White can always trade it off if he needs to.) But in these lines with a4... aside from the immediate threat (Nc5 to keep the a pawn and then the idea of Nd4-b3 keeps looming over the position), if white takes the pawn and the queen comes to a5, it's suddenly super-annoying that this knight on d4 covers all the squares that you'd like to use to protect the knight on c3. So, this could also be a question you could ask yourself: "How to I connect the knight on d4 with the rest of my pieces?" But those are just some thoughts I as a non-titled player had after reading your comment. I of course don't want to claim that I would've found a4 at the board, or that I would've lasted more than 30 moves against a super-GM. ;)

    Thanks for the recap. It’s an amazing privilege to play over the board against a 2700+ player - can’t really expect too much of yourself there. It’s funny how your pawn stayed on A5 to the end of the game, when it was the A4 move that may have given you some chances.
