"Resources & Character" Analysis - Devil May Cry

In this video I'll go over each character's resources, how they affect gameplay, and what this tells us about the characters. Resource: A value, that can be earned, maintained and spent/lost *in gameplay*, which affects your capabilities. The *in gameplay* qualification is why I don't consider Red Orbs a resource until 5, otherwise they certainly are. Twitter: Nero_theGame Patreon: ...

    Quad S can also be determined as dante being in control of the situation he holds LT to prime his SDT, he anticipates the attack, its not an emergency button, he knows when to use SDT, and as soon as he reaches SSS, the sign that he has everything under control, boom, he attacks

    I haven't made it this far but I have watched a few videos. It's very intimidating. It reminds me of a more extreme version of the end of Nier Automata. Perhaps this is the chance for the player to rebel against the other endings. The thing is that the guys who made the game aren't going to make it a fair fight. If you want something different then you need to do whatever is necessary to best the creators...or Yoko Taro just really likes to see us squirm as we obsess over completing everything. 😂

    it took me about 5 years to finish this "boss", and I had to use a video guide to do it. I never died to the last note just because the guide told me it was there. I was still enraged knowing it was there. The saddest thing is that if you don't finish the story you can't unlock the final arena and weapons, which is why I wanted so bad to finish it. I think the bayonetta rythm level is what this should have been: easy, spectacular and a real work of art. The music is beautiful though 😢

    With Tails, i only have Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for reference but Adventure 1 Tails had a good way of playig the character: he isnt trying to find the Chaos emeralds or save the animals, he is just trying to keep up with Sonic.

    An example of ludo-narrative dissonance from scoring that is done deliberately to improve the game is how in many SRPGs, the score/rank is strongly or exclusive skewed towards turns taken. This does two things, the first is usually dissonant and the second depends on the game: 1. Stops the player from turtling like a fucking pussy. 2. Disincentives being a mass murdering maniac. By changing the goal away from just emptying out each map of enemies makes the game significantly more interesting, and gives the games more of a puzzle feel that makes the player feel like they actually played intelligently.

    Everything about D3 feels like it’s a game it doesn’t want to be played. Most of the characters are superbly unlikeable. The few likable characters are treated like absolute shit. The game plays horribly. Performance gets progressively worse. It almost feels like Taro had to get all the shitposts and bile out of his system before making Neir: Automata lol.

    No we won't PLAY IT. Bayonetta and Hi Fi ate inferior. Comparing something like DMC5 the Bayonetta 3 is basically spitting in your viewer's face. Do better next time and get your priorities straight. The video should've start and ended with Devil May Cry. Just look at all the top comments, that's the only real game they care about. No we willl not PLAY the trash.

    Royal Guard feels very Dante, let the enemies think they're tough, be cocky by letting them try to swing on him, then sweep the rug out from under them with a Royal Release or Royal Guard. Show mastery of the situation by not feeling the need to zoom around at the speed of light or have every enemy up in the air getting tossed and shot at like rag dolls as you jump cancel, explode and style switch. Just turn the brain off and deny your enemies the right to effect you, deny them the ability to phase you, show the world just how little they matter.

    I'd also like to point out something even funnier about that last note, that not only is that note done with no visual indicator to speak of, but unless my family's music-hobby lineage has failed me *_it is not in time with the already hard-to-follow music whatsoever._* It's INSTEAD in time with Mikhail's second line as you point out, which is yet another layer to Yoko Taro's intentional mindfuckery by breaking the one, ONE consistent rule of this fight at the very last input by playing around with what constitutes as an "audio cue".

    about the critcisim at 26:52 i believe that when playing as vergil, having concentration be a resource that incentivied to hold on to and not something you spend like DT, but "spending" concentration making vergil more efficient in combat, is a design choice and perfectly reflects him. vergil has always been obsessed with power and control, as he is traumatized from the loss of his mother and him nearly dying when he was a child, back when he lacked both, making him believe the lack of them caused that unfortunate event. the simple thought process that "more concentration = more power = more better" is a representation of how vergil thinks, and how its affected his fights with dante over the years. spending concentration as vergil to take the risk of losing control of the fight and the additional power concentration brings with it to gain efficiency like dante is specifically incentivised against, because thats just not what vergil is like. same with dmc5 for example, vergil was willing to split his human side from his demon side and eat the qliphot apple to gain more power, just to still lose against dante, because dante is not out for power or control (despite having plenty), hes out for efficiency and damn good at it too. vergil however is too blinded by his trauma to realize this, which is why he loses as both urizen and vergil against dante and nero. in my opinion, when playing as vergil, the act of spending concentration in a fight is basically fighting against his own compulsion and need for power and control in exchange for efficiency, which would make sense why spending concentration nets better results as opposed to hording it. spending concentration is basically vergil "healing" from his trauma, and subsequently becoming a better fighter. vergil is powerful, but because hes always after more power to gain control, hes at the mercy of his "lack" of power, taking control away from him, making him powerful, but not efficient. vergils efficieny as a fighter is held back by his fear of giving up his quest for more power. he believes he doesnt have to face his fears to get better, in his mind its "just a little more power then i can beat dante". this is how i interpret vergil as a character and i believe the concentration meter represents him as a character perfectly. despite the age of this video and the very lenghty comment i would love to hear your opinion on my interpretation. other than that, great video! havent watched such an amusing video in a while

    • @nerothesky
      @nerothesky 2 месяца назад

      To make sure I understand, it seems like what you're getting at is that a full bar of concentration is like an unrealistic ideal Vergil holds himself to. If he actually wants to succeed, and be efficient, he has to compromise that ideal here and there. As much as he'd like to be, he isn't perfect (unless the player is which is unlikely). Is that the gist of it? If so I completely agree and I say as much in the video when we get to DMC5. I think the issue is that I didn't consider losing concentration in DMC4 as spending it, whereas I did consider using World of V or auto-parry to be spending it. I still believe the distinction I drew makes sense, because, unlike in 4, you do actually need to have a certain amount of concentration to afford those moves, but you raise a good point; it may not actually be a consequential distinction. Given this actually was the point you were trying to make...yeah you convinced me on this one. It's just more clear what "giving up concentration" means in 5, but you can derive the same thing from 4. Thanks for the comment.

Instead it's just a typical rant which can be expressed with a single line of words not even a video required. If anything i found was interesting in this video was that ur temperament and venting style match Max Derrat's which he was the one who recommended this video in the first place.

    Yoko Taro probably saw people losing their shit with this section and did nothing but giggle to himself like the freaking gremlin he is. Even in the FFXIV/Nier collab content he'd continuously pester the devs to make the fights harder or add more bullets until they had to tell him their literal engine couldn't handle that shit and he needed to chill lol. I'd love to know how this man kept getting his ideas made despite all the nonsense he put people through, even before the success of Nier:Automata.

  • @Thetiredpotato11

    Something to note is that taro has explained his development ideas in interviews, his goal is to evoke specific feelings and works backwards from there. This boss isn’t fair on purpose, mikhail losing the only person in his life isn’t fair. This boss is meant to make you feel mikhail’s suffering, his loss, his anger, and his hopelessness. If you can get through it all, you find peace and find yourself not complete, but accepting of what you’ve gone through, just as mikhail did

    On the one hand, drakenier has some of the best storytelling in gaming, and the nier side of things (apart from the mobile game) have fantastic gameplay. On the other hand, drakengard games sacrificed gameplay for the story, and drakengard 3 has some frustrating characterization (mostly mikhail) and some loose plot threads that still need answers that weren’t even answered in the book rewrite. This series never fails to evoke a lot of emotions from me, for good or ill And where in the world does the mobile game fit in?!
