    It’s weird that the car didn’t even give you a lot of warnings, the car just died was like “oh well”. Meanwhile in the new rav4 hybrid if you do the exact same thing the car goes crazy and gives a lot of warnings, because the computer knows how bad it’s bad fir the hybrid battery to lose all power.

    My 2012 prius C ran out of gas and battery. I added more gas and it still will not start. I unplugged the Hybrid battery and have left it on the side of the road. I hope it will start up when I get back to it this afternoon after work.

    V. Useful! So after fuel gone 2-3 miles is the answer and around 35mph. You'll get stranded if the 12v battery dies, for example sitting in the parked car, no idling, AC on. As one does in the summer. For that a little jumpstarter Li battery is sufficient.

    It's a really bad idea to run any Toyota HSD vehicle completely out of gas, and then keep driving on the battery, and here's why: 1. The starter motor for the gasoline engine is the 30 hp #1 motor generator in the transaxle. This is powered from the high voltage traction battery. The 12 volt battery in these cars supplies power ONLY for the car's computer's, lights, and the multifunction head unit that incorporates the stereo, hands-free phone, and GPS nav system if your Prius has one. That 12 volt battery has NOTHING to do with the car's gas engine starter. 2. Once you refill the tank with gasoline, if the high voltage traction battery has been depleted to the point that the inverter can't supply at least 5 kilowatts to the MG1 motor for several seconds, you will not be able to start the gasoline engine at all, unless your is a PHEV (Prius Plug-in, Prius Prime, Rav4 Prime). If you do in fact have a PHEV, you can get the car towed to anyplace that has a 120 volt a/c outlet, and recharge the car with the charger that it came with, or plug it into a public L2 charger if there happens to be one close by. As soon as the Battery Management System shows a couple miles of range in the traction battery, that's enough to re-start the gas engine the usual way and you can then drive again. 3. But if your Toyota HSD Hybrid isn't a PHEV, and you have exhausted the traction battery below the point where it has enough juice to spin the MG1 motor, you are up the creek: you can fill the gas tank sure, but there's no way to recharge the traction battery out by the side of the road somewhere. You will have to have the car towed to a Toyota dealership, for them to to a "rescue charge". What this entails is: Dealerships have an external charger mounted on a dolly that can be wheeled around, and it can be programmed for specific types of Toyota hybrids with the voltage and charge current appropriate for that model vehicle. The service technician unplugs the high voltage DC power cable from the battery at the point that it enters the car's inverter, and connects the charger to the battery. It takes about 30 minutes, I think, to do a rescue charge on the 1.5 kilowatt battery that's in most Prius and Corolla Hybrids, and 60 minutes to "rescue charge" a dead Sienna, Highlander, Rav4, or Camry (these have the 2.5l gas engine and a larger 2 kilowatt battery). A rescue charge isn't cheap, I was quoted $350 from Elk Grove Toyota. So please don't try the experiment from this video with your own car. The 1 kilowatt battery in the non-PHEV Prius and Corolla Hybrids has very little reserve power. If you run out of gas, IMMEDIATELY STOP THE CAR and turn off all the lights and power equipment until you have obtained more gasoline. You will need to have the traction battery showing at least a couple of bars to re-start the gas engine, and there's no way to recharge it other than at a Toyota dealership. And keep in mind that the 12 volt battery in these cars is very small and has only about 1/4 of the reserve capacity of the battery in a regular car o pickup truck; if the 12 volt battery drops below about 11 volts, the car's computers won't boot up when you press the Power button, and then you will have that problem to deal with, too. But at least you can re-charge the 12 volt battery at home or from another vehicle via jumper cables.

    Got 2 H2's now, I know I couldn't afford 2 EV's (or even 1) so not even a fair choice. Now GM claim that the HUMMER EV is 86" wide. Yes, but the body isn't. It's actually the same as the H2, they just have a wider stance with wheels/tires and they add the fenders to cover it. You could get your H2 that wide by spacers or offset wheels and add fender flares. The length is more on EV and that is from what I can tell the h2 is nearly vertical in the rear, while the EV is slanted more. It's not a huge difference but it's also increasing rear overhang making depart angle worse for off road. What is a huge difference is the weight. I think buyers are going to be in for a big shock when they find out their range isn't keeping up. The truck weighs over 9k lbs. the SUV will probably be 8k lbs. that's insane amount of weight. I've been driving the H2 now for over 3 years and I can tell it's heavier than most SUVs. 250 mile range on low end, that's hardly enough so why even offer it? Finally, factor in battery fade and we'll see how these compare to buying a 17 year old H2 now when they're 17 years old. Towing, EV's aren't there yet, H2 with a full tank of gas will always win over this early HUMMER EV. And the look. They look about as far from a proper HUMMER as you can get, especially the SUV. The front end the headlights are in the wrong place. Not nearly square enough to be a HUMMER. The truck looks more like an Avalanche. And so far the SUV is listed as only a 5-passenger while also being bigger than the H2. The H2 had a 6-passenger option day one and they added 7-passenger option in '08. I have a full 3rd party 3rd row in one of my H2's now. I really hope they offer 3rd row in these, for the size and price, they should. Based on price, they're too expensive. We're already hearing the interiors are cheap plastic just like the H1/h2/h3. One thing they did right was have a proper wheel base HUMMER for a truck like the H3T, but again, doesn't look enough like a HUMMER. From the back it's an Avalanche. From the front it just looks like any other truck now. They do look good from the side, the doors have the HUMMER look. And then the top. I wouldn't want removable panels. I know from experience, you use it at first and then it becomes too much trouble to remove them every time. Had several cars with removable roofs, a novelty that wears off quick. A large sunroof would be better.

    Not a good idea at all purposely running any car out of gas. The fuel pump in the gas tank relies heavily upon the surrounding gas to keep the fuel pump cool which keeps it from over heating. On some vehicles, if ran low or out of gas, this will throw off the fuel gage reading or worst yet you will have to take the vehicle in to have the gas gage recalibrated.

    Amazing how clever the engineers were behind this design. It seems unlikely this fella realizes that MG1 will require a certain residual Traction (HV) battery capacity to rotate the engine to start it…To say nothing of the Aux battery having the remaining capacity to close the MSR’s. If I am mistaken, apologies in advance.

    • @aprilkolwey4779

      The Prius uses the high-voltage (hybrid) battery to start the car, using the MG1 motor. There is no conventional starter motor.

      @@aprilkolwey4779 so in an experiment where the Prius was first made to run out of gas and subsequently made to run on ev mode till the hybrid battery drained and the car stalled ... It should not be possible to start the Prius again. Yet in all such experiments people just filled up the car with gas and we're able to start the car ... How did that happen. I am just not able to understand. Could you explain this?

    • @aprilkolwey4779
      @aprilkolwey4779 3 года назад

      @@sanjaykumarsingh1970 I'm not entirely sure, but my best guess is that the car prevents you from draining the battery fully (maybe only down to about 5% left?) so that it still has some power to start the engine after more fuel is added.

    • @sanjaykumarsingh1970
      @sanjaykumarsingh1970 3 года назад

      @@aprilkolwey4779 Thanks for taking the time to reply .... wow that actually sounds like a very logical answer and would be a very smart and prudent thing to plan for ... Toyota engineering team has done a fine job here but that brings me further to another question. There will be a day when your hybrid battery conks out and your prius refuses to start. I have heard that this error can be bypassed and your hybrid can run purely on gas. Granted that the mileage will now be poor but it will start. What do you think is starting the engine.? My best guess is it's still the hybrid battery. It will work in the interim to start the car but not use the traction motor. Rest of the functions like charging of the hybrid battery etc is still maintained by the car electronics. What do you think? Sorry I am asking you these questions as I purchased an old Prius ... A 2010 model. It's done 160k miles and still runs fine but someday the inevitable will happen and I should know how to get myself out of a sticky situation like this. Thanks.
