Newly installed ceiling mount of the MTH Tinplate mono rail set with the over/under crossover expansion set. Dave Kross provided assistance in getting this mounted on my train room ceiling. This method is definitely a two person job for the guy who wants to retain his sanity.

Is look forward to more videos
James your layout is fantastic! The catenary looks amazing. Where did you get the small signs you have attached to the girders? Also I would love to see a layout tour where you film each scene (slowly) or even do a still slideshow (like the ones at the end of this video) so we can enjoy your modeling. There is so much great stuff on your layout I had to watch the video 3x... thanks for sharing!
Most of those signs are Bar Mills or Blair Line kits (O and HO scale) that I purchased on eBay. I’m planning to make a shorter engineer view video from my Hiawatha/Little Joe next. Thanks for your very kind comments.
I fabricated a “box” to hold everything that I placed on the roof top behind the sign. The red/black wires I put in a plastic tube, painted to look like a conduit, and ran that down the side of the building.
How did you wire the miller engineering sign to the roof of the car wash? did you cut into the roof or rerouted the flat cable to the back of the building?
Can all MTH monorail sets be mounted on a ceiling or did you have to make your own adjustments?
The base already has a hole which you can use to attach it to the ceiling with a screw or molly bolt. My ceiling is bead board do a screw worked but if your ceiling is drywall you’ll need to use a molly bolt or possibly one of the expandable plastic inserts for screws. You will need to adapt the riser/base attachment to prevent the riser from coming out. I drilled a hole and used a small screw to hold the riser in place, but you could glue the riser in place instead.
Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me the lowest distance from the ceiling, how far it has to come down to enable the figure 8? I would like to do this above my layout. Second question, it looks like the expansion set has only one base with 11 extension rods. I would assume that there would have been 11 bases to go with the extension rods? Bob in Chicago
The “lowest” is equal to the height of the standard set riser. What the expansion kit does is give you progressively shorter risers to replace the risers in your standard set (in other words you are pulling up the track with the expansion kit risers to enable them to pass over the standard height risers). The intent is for you to replace the risers that came with the standard set which is why you don’t get additional bases. I ended up using those leftover risers with extra track that I purchased and just made my own bases using a block of wood with a hole drilled in it for inserting the risers.
Thanks for your comments. I have mounted my Monorail on ceiling and it came out great. Got some Vertigo from looking up three days in a row for 5 hours each day.
Drill a hole in the side of the base where the riser is inserted, then use a small screw that you tighten against the riser.
How did you mount the Poles to the Bases as to not come apart hanging up-side-down?
Really Nice. I have never seen one run on inverted track like this. Thanks for sharing
Hello James, I plan to hang my monorail upside down like yours. From the factory when upside down the tabs do not hold the track correctly. Did you re weld the tabs?I hope to hear from you. Frank. Fbr@frankbrhodes.com
MTH doesn't list a scale but I'd say the car wash is closer to 1:50 than 1:64 so the 1:43 cars don't look out of place with this accessory. I've found that some structures are a little too small to put a 1:43 vehicle next to them so I usually opt for a 1:50 car in those situations.
I loved the train transport of new 1960 ford station wagons at 2:51. I'm doing the same but with a lorry transporter of 1960 Cadillacs from Brooklin & Western Models. The nice red & white 1959 Plymouth by Whitebox caught my eye also. We have a lot of the same cars, but I don't have any trains. I'm going to do a strip mall diorama with diner, traffic c1960 setting.
I have the exact same 1:43 1960 Cadillac & 1960 Edsel by Brooklin. What's the scale of Mel's Diner & the car wash? I thought they were 1:64 but they don't look out of place next to the Brooklins.
Best looking ballasted and weathered MTH Realtrax I've ever seen. Very well sceniced layout with lots to see. I enjoyed the ride. Thanks for sharing.
Nice train
I bought most of it on line from Mario's Trains out of Winchester, VA including the "over and under cross-over kit". I did pick up a few track pieces from eBay vendors.
Looks awesome ! Can I ask where you bought the extra track? Thanks Murph
