I wish we knew why he was in debt to the goons in the first place.
Emily was crazy and a killer..but stephanie is a true behind the scenes crazy person. First she slept with her half brother and when emily supposedly died she took over her man her house her kid. At one point she wears her dress. Nah Stephanie is a complete psychopath.
As a gambler, that was a most pleasant way to die.
Amazing work, Justin! Funny, emotional, optimistic and inspiring. A constant reminder to keep going, even as *30* looms :)
Andrew! Thank you so much dude, for giving it a watch, for the kind words, for being a friend and confidant post-grad. Let's keep this train going!
Was a dumb ending to the movie. And omg his voice was sooooo anoying thru the entire movie it was hard to watch
7:58 he never asked tho….she voluntarily sent it to him . . .
Wow now I know I'm not the only one who does this. I do Wikipedia dives and will be like they were only 22!
We've all been there! Welcome to the club, friend.
It's fun for me when I compare myself to 2D male characters. Sure, different gender, but the same, not emotionally stable in early 30s, lonely miserableness, less to feel bad about. Or later in the story, finally with someone. And just the hope I feel, that for me too with someone. And the comedy of early 30s miserableness, better than a there, there.
Yeah, there's a type of comparison that I think that can make us feel better about ourselves, while also keep us from falling too far "behind." Usually, those miserable characters in their 30s (especially in studio comedies) achieve some sort of happiness in their life by the end of it. A reminder that the "miserableness" isn't permanent and that through the right kind of work/self-improvement/self-reflection there's light at the end of the tunnel.
This is my first video of yours I've watched and as a fellow over comparer, obsessed movie watcher and video essayist, I related a lot to this. Especially since I'm turning 21 soon, going to college soon but the truth is...past the terror and horror of aging past our heroes and our idols, its exciting too because the journey never ends until you say it does.
Thanks for tuning in! I'm glad you were able to relate - and I love your framing of this comparison dilemma here. Leaning into the excitement of aging is what it's about! Life is long, and the process of learning about ourselves and the world around us never ends. It's not easy, but I do know it's rewarding, and I think ultimately it makes for a full life. You seem to have the exact right headspace for going about that journey, and I wish you the best in college!
@@thecookfilms2143 I think to usurp the terror of growing old you have to approach life every single day like you're in a Spielberg movie where every moment is a potential adventure and to aspire to never fail to see the beauty and wonder of being alive.
@@batmanultra7 This is the Sammy Fabelman grind! I endorse. And maybe a person can aspire to make their lowest, most destabilizing moments (which are inevitable) into something controlled and purposeful and meaningful through art.
I've planned to rewatch The Sopranos when I'm older because I know it will resonate with me more. Yet, I see people my age who obsess over the show for the wrong reasons. The memes and twitter discourse isn't meaningful. It's dwelling in the trend (since it's resurged in popularity) and I think you allude to nostalgia in your video too. Your nuanced take on our relationship to media needs more attention because if we want to learn more about ourselves from what we've watched, we must know how to revisit it in a meaningful way and learn from the experience, which of course with cinema, is best shared.
Also, f*ck comfort watches! Looking at you, The Office! Great work as always, Justin! I'm really happy you made this.
Absolutely - watching The Sopranos as a middle-aged man has got to hit different than watching it in your teens or 20s. And, honestly, I feel like a lot of the shows we watch and love (The Leftovers, Breaking Bad, Mad Men - which I think you’ve seen some of) probably hit different at different stages of life. I suppose nothing ever quite matches up to the *first* time you watch something, but subsequent watches illuminate different shades of what is a “fixed” work of art in many ways. And I think it’s all about being excited by the prospect that a work of art contains infinite meaning rather than being intimidated by it. And to your point, re-engaging with something, rather than living in your memory of it, is a way of confronting your nostalgia. Not like nostalgia is such a bad thing either - it should just get mixed in there with everything else, including letting something’s meaning to you grow and change. Really happy you took the time to engage with this video, Anthony - glad that someone who has such a nuanced, intelligent perspective on film and art such as yourself picked up what I was trying to put down. Appreciate you, sir!
Aww thank you,@@thecookfilms2143! However, you're the true maestro of thought here! Putting yourself out there is important and I'm learning to lean into expressing my own vulnerabilities online in order to be creative in my photography and writing. You really made something special here and I'm proud of you!
@@avezza4 I hope I do see more of it from you! Whether it's your photography or Letterboxd reviews or whatever, it's been hugely rewarding seeing your growth as a writer/creative throughout the past couple years. Let's both keep on the path.

Amen! Everything in life can be tied back into Pokemon. But thanks for watching, Andre - it's greatly appreciated dude!
"I'm fucking cooked" should turn into "I'm fucking COOK" (as in you, TheCookFilms)
You're so right. That should be my "I'm Batman" origin story moment.
It was a great ending, Howard died happy while his “cousin” died in fear
Oh, sweetheart, try being 47.
Hopefully! Someday...
@@thecookfilms2143 I don't want this cryptic aftersun-ass comment on this vid, lol. we're still gonna be searching / figuring stuff out, but we'll make it to 47 and I'll give you a pat on the back when we do (though I'd already be 48...)
Arno is Howard's brother in law, not cousin *
I really thought this is a viral short until i checked, you should so add it to the movie database so pol can push it on letterboxd and get more pol viewing. + what you said about not being on tiktok, it goes away after some time off the app, and it really is life changing.
U gon blow up fs I already know it
Ahhh I appreciate that!
This is a really niche feeling and it's so nice that you made a video that captures the angst of it all. This really is art in of itself. You also did a great job of turning that emotion into something that can feel positive. It certainly is panic inducing when you get older and there is a sense of weight that starts creeping up with your age. I'm not where my favorite character or celebrity/abstract idea of a person should be? Something about that just feels so distressing. The fact that characters I love who are supposed to be like psuedo parental figures or older siblings and people I look up are played by people who will one day have been younger than me (and in some instances I already am older than said people) is just so bizarre. But the things you said in the video are really comforting to remember. I also try to think of all of the celebrities that didn't get their start until later in life. But maybe that's not the best idea. I'm still comparing lol. But I think you really illustrated the fact that this can be a positive emotion. I do hope you know that you have left an impact with this video. You've done something with this video. It may not be the giant accomplishments of those you compare yourself to. But you have still made a mark on the world by making videos like this. I am going to think about this video. I'm going to talk about this video with my friends. I'm going to remember this video when I have thoughts like this creep up in my mind. You have made art and touched me as well as others. Maybe all of those characters were certain ages when they accomplished certain feats. You were only 27 when you made this wonderful video.
Wow. I can’t thank you enough for this comment, for engaging with this video on such a deep level, and all the thought and consideration you have toward this topic. Most of all, I’m glad this video gave you some bit of comfort - I know that’s what I was looking for when I was making it. I think engaging with art, despite AND because of how it makes us feel, is one of the most worthwhile endeavors we can attach ourselves to. And ultimately, I do think it can result in growth and self-improvement and a happier/healthier/fuller life. The alternative to letting a piece of art evolve in relation to you is just living in your memory of it - which plenty of people do, very understandably - but I’m glad you see the value in sitting in your discomfort and letting those would-be “parental figures”/“older sibling” morph into something else. The beautiful thing too, is I think the discomfort gets dampened over time by looking at it head-on. Your comment has touched me! You didn’t have to leave it, but you did - and I’m very grateful. Next time that age anxiety creeps into your brain, just know I’m there with ya (and whole lot of other people)! Thank you.
One hell of a twist , the producer must have gotten some good lsd . It was emotional and deep actually. I think Matt and his colleagues did some fine actting. Thank you
I've had these exact thoughts and it genuinely gives me a lot of anxiety when watching certain movies. I'm 23 now, and being one year older than Dante and Randal in the first Clerks absolutely does not sit well with me lol But hey, you're the same age as Renton in Trainspotting, so as long as you aren't a jobless heroin addict, you're doing better than he is lol
Oh, the Clerks anecdote is messing with my brain too! Ugh, the steady march of time. When you age past the characters in those quintessential coming of age movies, where age is such an important factor, it's always discomforting. Let's BOTH take some relative comfort on seemingly being on a better path than Renton. You got four years on me to do cool things, and I expect as much!
As a 23-year-old who feels super behind in life for a myriad of reasons (such as the fact that I still live with my parents and am still single) and also find myself unhealthily comparing myself to my peers and characters in movies/media in general, MAN this video really spoke to me. Easily one of the most relatable video essays I have watched in a long while, and you definitely just earned a new subscriber
First off, thank you for watching. Secondly, I’m so glad to hear that this video resonated with you, and I appreciate your kind words. I’m realizing a common thread, even in this comments section, of people in their 20s who have an intense need to compare themselves to their peers or characters, so I hope you take comfort in the fact that so many are contending with similar feelings (including me, clearly lol). Looking forward to showing you the videos coming down the pipeline, thanks for sticking around!
People really should dare themselfs to "do" more things. Film might be in my top 10 things to do but we often forget that to have a rich life expirience we need to take risks and do things, just go and talk to people without expecting anything and not have all your life filter by the representations of it.
Couldn't agree more. Especially for film people, there's a fine line to walk between consumption and experiencing. I do think that most of the worthwhile things in life, or at least self-growth, lies on the other side of risk. I think if I could give any advice to an 18-year-old me, it would be to take more risks - don't just run back to comfort when you feel like you're doing something "out of character." Take risks, fail, lick your wounds and get back out there. And oddly enough, experiencing life that fully then gets filtered back into the art you create and adds richness to what you consume.
On a similar note, watching HIMYM (about 30 year olds who do not have everything figured out) makes me a lot less scared to be 30 one day. It feels like I have to figure it all out at 21 but the characters show me that life does not end at 30
I've thought about that show, too! While I've only seen a couple episodes, it is hugely comforting that it depicts life as being a complicated, worthwhile adventure even as you venture into and past your 30s. Which, of course, we all already know is the case (that adventure never stops), but so much art seems to feature self-assured very young people to measure ourselves up to, creating that sense of age anxiety.
I really enjoyed the video although it made me uncomfortable, I like the idea of using this anxiety to grow and learn how to push through it, and to know that its a common thing for people to feel like they are already too old when in their 20s
Let me say, I appreciate you pushing through the discomfort and watching! I’m all about using the parts of us that we’re not immediately proud of (anxiety, for example) and re-aiming it toward something that can benefit our growth or help develop our sense of self. In a strange, contradictory way, even leaning into discomfort in order to reach a more solid, consistent comfort.
experience as a product, damn.
Haha yeahhhhhh, I don’t love sitting with that thought. Probably the most cynical reading of what social media/the influencer economy provides to us
I love a romance series I watched as a teenager. I was so disappointed I didn't find love yet when I turned 21(the girls age)😂 Can't imagine my disappointment when Im gonna turn 26(the guy's age)and don't have a booming start-up and a lavish villa in my name 😂😂
Ahhhh, TV always giving us the most realistic expectations for how our lives will turn out. If I’m comparing myself to this guy - I’m 27 and don’t a) have my own business b) own property. At least you still have a chance!
I just stumbled onto your channel recently thanks to the algorithm, but as a fellow creative in their mid-twenties (26) who also cant help but to compare myself to what other people are doing, I support your endeavors. All we can do is try our best and see where that takes us.
Hey, I’m glad that the algorithm took you here! And I appreciate your comment. Maybe we can all take some comfort in the fact that so many of us (creatives in their mid-20s but just people in general) are comparing ourselves to one another? That comparison is impossible and constant, and we all somehow feel like we are uniquely ahead or behind (emphasis on the latter)… but at least we’re not alone. I wish you the best on all your creative endeavors, too. Let's keep trying our best.
Yea, understandable
Coooool, thanks for watching.
I am 27 and I make videos about children’s video games - I’m sorry but that’s way cooler than any of Orson Welles accomplishments.
Orson could never. He'd combust if he even held Sonic Colors: Ultimate.
Great video! I think there’s so much here that’s so interesting to dig into- specifically how and what we subconsciously (or sometimes consciously) take away from the characters and stories that we watch. So often I find myself trying to enjoy a movie or show and end up picking apart the plot and dialogue to the point where I’m not enjoying myself. This video is a great reminder that I’m not alone in that feeling- but to also try and focus more on experiencing and contributing to the art around me, and not trying to be something in compassion to it.
Love this takeaway, Mr. Jamontoaster Monto. I think as we become more discerning about the films/art we take in, it can at a certain point begin to cut into our enjoyment of said thing. And while being discerning is important, as you said here, so is just experiencing something! Not letting the attachments/anxieties you project onto a piece of art overwhelm the experience that it's providing to you. It's a delicate dance, dawg, but I like this idea of "contributing to the art around you" as a healthy endeavor to put your time and energy into. Thanks for watching mate.
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever put the age of a character into perspective like this while watching a movie. The idea that Captain American is younger than me in the first movie is kinda blowing my mind right now lol I don’t think I’ll ever watch a movie the same way again, thanks TheCookFilms
That’s what we like to hear! But yeah man, I think from here on out, it’s just gonna be a lot of aging past characters I thought I’d be eternally younger than. First Captain America, next Chief from the Silent Summer film series. Thank you for your kind words, Ty Guy brother man.
justin, I love ya
as a proud TheCookFilms viewer for several years and watching your video essays and ending analyses - and now as the proud roommate of TheCookFilms… holy cow. this is such an incredible, honest, profound piece of art that represents you so well, and will probably resonate with many people in our age demographic. I love and appreciate that this exists, because I NEED the sentiments expressed in this video injected into my veins. We’re always coming-of-age, aren’t we? comparison is the thief of joy, but I suppose in a healthy way, it can help motivate us to engage more with art, with the world, and therefore, encourage us to take risks and be unafraid of failure. this “fixed point on a map” that this video is… some of your absolute best stuff. oh, and you’re welcome with (most of) the DVD / blu ray collection 😋
Love ya, man. Thanks for championing my endeavors always (as few and far between as they may be - hopefully, to be slightly more consistent). And a special thanks for reminding me that if I didn’t get the video posted yesterday, I’d have to re-record the “Last month” lead-in at the beginning of the video (procrastination is also the thief of joy, too). I’ve come to accept that the need to compare runs through me pretty strong, so this video was a way of maybe finding a healthier way of thinking about that. Or at least, being more comfortable living in the contradictions of comparison. I’m very glad you found some value in it - no doubt, many sentiments we’ve expressed one on one throughout the years found their way into this video. And you’re so real for lending (despite me not asking) your physical media collection for this video. I’ve been staring at those babies for the past 11 months, it was finally time to put them to work.
Julia Fox surprised me... KG won it all
What is a disater is your lack of understanding what this movie is about. Great movie but average, short dopamine addict simpleton will not grasp it.
This video was unnecessary. YOU are a PUTZ!
I'll add to your content that you don't understand cinema
has anybody else noticed that the delivery guy that got him the opal was also his neighbour who didnt let his son shit in his appartement
Wrong.
The debt collector is more stupid than howard tho. Does he think a jewelerry shop doesnt have cameras. In what universe are they getting away with that murder. He had the money, guy is just dumb.
So was Sandler's character.
Well that's most street thugs dumb as fuq and are in prison most of their lives.
Nah fam, Howard was focused on that black Opel selling at a million, he made a way to that million
Calling them gimmicks is disrespectful to the artistry and mastery utilized in the GENRE episodes. No other show has touched that level of genius, seamless exploration and integration of multiple formats. You're not qualified to critique my dude- you are desperately seeking a new angle looking for clout and womp womp *skill issue
I just watched it right now. After 4 years. And it brought my shoulders down big time. Shesssh.😢
I just finished it on hbo max like 5 minutes ago. I cannot believe that man shot him in the face. and then killed his cousin.
Your summary of the film is accurate. But what I think you left out, is that the film reveals Anna Kendrick to be any acting genius.
this movie perfectly captures america as it was right before ******, the essence of 2012-2019 is etched into this movie
Tied with The Departed for most shocking main character death.
