Ellen's sitcom always felt like a lamer, less edgy copy of Seinfeld to me, and her coming out gay felt like a desperation move to generate buzz when her ratings were slipping. Her sitcom didn't get cancelled because she was gay- It was cancelled because it wasn't good and people weren't watching it. If anything, coming out gay gave her a boost which kept her on the air couple more seasons before people lost interest again.
